CONFERENCE OBJECTIVES: The changing focus of the global competitive market is imposing change on the existing transportation infrastructure, trade corridors, and markets. The purpose of this conference is to provide transportation officials with a broader understanding of the data issues associated with this change. Participants will present and discuss freight data availability and the emerging needs of business and government. The specific objectives of the conference are to: C C C C C Provide an overview of freight transportation and emerging trends; Identify the availability of regional and national data; Identify the data required to address policy questions; Examine analytical and forecasting capabilities; Discuss new actions or strategies to obtain and enhance freight data and analysis;

2 C C Develop research recommendations to set priorities for TRB, FHWA and BTS; and Identify strategies for improving freight data collection and closing the gaps in data that are required for the development of policies, plans and programs.

The data needs conference is designed for those interested in freight issues from local, regional, state and national transportation professionals and policy makers; researchers from academia and other institutions; and practitioners from both the public and private sectors. Participants will share and derive useful insights regarding data availability, how data is currently used and the needs for the future. The conference will cover all modes and seek to promote interregional discussion and cooperation. CONFERENCE FORMAT: The conference will feature a combination of policy speakers, transportation professionals from government and academia and discussion panels. There will be a plenary session and several panel sessions designed to allow significant time for active discussion by attendees.
