Challenges of Freight Transport in Europe Modal Split Europe (2015) 18.3% 6.4% 75.3% road rail inland navigation Challenges for the future increasing freight volume CO2 emissions bottlenecks in infrastructure limited road capacity public and political pressure Transport accounts for 20.3 % of worldwide CO2 emissions! Sources: Eurostat 2017, European Commission,2011; ITF, Need to increase the use of ecofriendly transport modes 2

Inland waterways as sustainable mode of transport external costs bulk freight capacity Source: PLANCO Consulting & Bundesanstalt für Gewässerkunde 2007 infrastructure costs Source: via donau Low utilization rate & sustainability High potential for inland waterway Source: PLANCO Consulting & Bundesanstalt für Gewässerkunde

Inland Waterways & the European Transport Strategy The European Commission aims to promote and strengthen the competitive position of inland waterways in the transport system, and to facilitate its integration into the intermodal logistics chain Political support & harmonization Differences between Baltic Sea, Rhine & (e.g. port of Rotterdam) Danube Region Lack of awareness & training in logistics sector (e.g. REWWay) Infrastructure modernization of the fleet, locks and ports maintainance of the waterway Need for cooperation & data sharing River Information Services(RIS), digitalization e.g. DoRIS 5 Sustainability alternative fuel (e.g. LNG Masterplan) more efficient navigation (fuel-saving)

Strategy Paper for Inland Waterway Transport - initiated by Mr. Bodewig & BSF The aim of the strategy paper for inland waterway transport is to strenghten this mode of transport in the European Union by - Involving relevant stakeholders and experts form the sector - Identifying gaps and measures to provide input for the national and European Transport policy. Mr. Bodewig Mr. Köhl Logistikum Draft Strategy Paper Master Thesis finalized June 2017 Industry Policy Makers Interviews Workshop EMMA Project Members Revised version Draft Strategy Paper Next steps: two workshops and finalization in spring

Ongoing Projects for Inland Waterway Transport EMMA Project (funded by Interreg) - 21 Partners in the Baltic Sea Region (DE, FI, LT, PL and SE) - aims at tackling the challenges and opportunities focusing on inland- and river-sea shipping. increasing the modal share fostering a better integration in the BSR transport chains the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region Prominent Project (H2020) Daphne Project, Danube Skills Project, Dante Project, Green Danube Project (Interreg Projects) 7
