Success through internationalization Growth course in Asia Today, both of KEBA s Business Areas, Industrial Automation and Banking and Services Automation, are successfully represented in Asia where they have established the KEBA brand. Machine and robot control systems and operating terminals, as well as self-service banking machines are all part of the Austrian automation company s product portfolio in the region. KEBA s success in Asia commenced in 2000 with initial, banking automation exports to China. At that time, together with a local distributor, KEBA launched the KEBA cash-recycler, an ATM that handles both deposits and withdrawals, onto the Chinese market. This successful entry into the Chinese, banking automation market was quickly followed by intensive contacts between KEBA Industrial Automation and Chinese machine manufacturers, who were extremely interested in the know-how of the Austrian company in the control system area. KEBA modified its machine controls and visualization systems to special, national stipulations and requirements and thus gained a foothold in a high-potential market at a very early stage. The inaugural KEBA branch in China opened in Peking in A separate office for the Industrial Automation Business Area was then founded in Ningbo (2005) and a second quickly followed in Guangzhou. In 2009, a third Chinese location was started-up in Shanghai. In the meantime, over 60 employees serve KEBA Industrial Automation customers in China. The local team prepares customized applications in close cooperation with Linz, puts machines into operation and ensures secure support services. KEBA is a brand that is much in demand in China s industrial sector. At the largest Chinese mechanical engineering trade fair in 2014/2015, numerous injection moulding machines bore the words Powered by KEBA. 3

Moreover, apart from machinery manufacture, the Chinese robotics sector has also gained in significance for KEBA. This is important, as alongside the USA, Germany and Japan, China is seen as the robotics market that will show the strongest growth in the coming years. The CBPM-KEBA joint venture founded in 2007 (Peking) has banking automation as its main focus and is also progressing successfully. With this joint venture, KEBA has further consolidated its position in the Chinese banking market, as CBPM is a subsidiary of the Chinese National Bank and the world s largest banknote printing house. The joint venture allows the use of sales structures and mutual synergy potential, while the linkage of the know-how of both companies has made CBPM-KEBA the leading supplier of cash-in and cash cycle solutions in China. Following a strong growth phase, the CBPM-KEBA *) joint venture has a workforce of 640 and during the past calendar year achieved translated sales revenues of around EUR 75 million. *) KEBA participation: 25% Parallel to the expansion in the Chinese market, the Industrial Automation Business Area has also extended its activities in the direction of Japan and Taiwan, and most recently, Korea. South Korea (2013) is developing in an extremely positive manner and can already point to successes in the robotic and machine control segments. In Japan, the home of the robot manufacturers, not only are control systems Made in Austria in demand, but in particular mobile, hand-held operating devices, which have been branded with the logos of numerous leading customers. These devices are characterized by their ergonomics and simplicity of operation. The fact that internationalization and the leap to the Far East have proven fruitful for KEBA is demonstrated by the sales growth rates in Asia, which in the last five years have averaged around 22 per cent. Additional growth can also be anticipated for the current year. This increase can be traced to the excellent market position that KEBA occupies in Asia. Gerhard Luftensteiner, the KEBA AG CEO: In the Far East, the KEBA name stands for quality and innovation. Asian customers also appreciate the high levels of 4

customer proximity and the expert know-how available for their industries that KEBA provides through its branches in the nations of the region. DELEM, which is a KEBA Group company specializing in the automation of sheet metal bending machines, also possesses an outstanding position in the Asian market. From a general perspective, KEBA envisages further opportunities for growth in Asia. On the one hand, these will emanate from the continuation of industrialization and on the other, through urbanization and demographic changes, which in the coming years will result in new industrial branches and additional possibilities for the automation experts. Naturally enough, KEBA also has a correspondingly strong position in Europe and during the past financial year, the export quota amounted to around 64 per cent. KEBA has been represented in Germany with its own subsidiary since 1990 and this market is extremely important for all of the company s business areas. In addition, KEBA is active in the Italian, Romanian, Czech and Turkish markets with its own sales companies, as well as in the Netherlands, where the Delem company, which has been part of the KEBA Group since 2013, is located. KEBA has also been active in the industrial automation area In the USA since 1998 via an own office. This market is currently showing tangible signs of recovery, as evidenced by the delivery of several thousand hand-held operating devices from LInz production to a leading OEM. KEBA is to continue on its internationalization course at speed. However, as a global player based in Linz, the company regards it as important that the national, economic policy framework be adjusted to match the challenges that Austrian companies have to face when seeking to remain competitive on the international stage. At present, KEBA has 940 employees worldwide, 220 of whom work in the group s international subsidiaries. In addition, the CBPM KEBA joint venture has a workforce of

International growth strengthens the Linz location KEBA s export quota traditionally exceeds 80 per cent and last year amounted to 86 per cent. With branch offices in the USA, Europe and Asia, KEBA is represented around the globe and serves numerous markets. Growth in these differing countries has also led to an increase in personnel numbers in Linz and serves to strengthen the development and production location in Upper Austria. In the past five years alone, KEBA in Linz has recruited an additional 150 employees. These consist mainly of technical specialists for the development, application and product management areas, although there was also growth in the production sector. In 2013, the second company plant opened in the Industriezeile and during the coming autumn this is to be enlarged by another 4,000 m 2 to a total of 10,000 m 2. A possibility for the rental of additional space has arisen thus creating ideal preconditions for further expansion. Gerhard Luftensteiner, the KEBA AG CEO: Internationalization constitutes KEBA s driving force and ensures that numerous top quality jobs in future branches are created in Linz. 6

The Business Areas in brief Industrial Automation In the industrial automation sector the Linz company offers branch solutions for robotics, plastics and packaging machines, and the sheet metal working segment. Mobile and stationary operating devices for industrial applications represent another cross-sector focal point. KEBA s customers in this area include both a large number of leading global players in the international, mechanical engineering market and robot manufacturers. During recent years, KEBA has consolidated its business position in international markets with the launch of a series of innovative products and further developments such as real time multitouch, the new multitouch panel generation. This facilitates the safe and direct transfer of hand movements to machine movements in real time. As the hard- and software come from a single source, customized visualizations can be produced quickly and simply. Moreover, printed, haptic elements facilitate safe operation, even when the attention of the user is diverted away from the operating panel. In 2014, the T10 directmove hand-held operating device, which allows a completely new and highly intuitive type of robot operation, attracted a great deal of attention and also captured the Germany Robotics Award. The innovative hand-held convinced the jury owing to its economic advantages, usability and high practical relevance. Automation has already entered many areas of life, industry and commerce and in future its significance is certain to increase still further, as evidenced by the example of Industry 4.0. KEBA is on the pace as far as the production of the future is concerned, is already suitably equipped from a product perspective, and as an automation provider is playing an active role in design processes. Banking and Services Automation In the Banking and Services Automation Business Area, KEBA develops and manufactures functional, modern banking machines, innovative postal and logistics solutions and lottery terminals for customers around the world. 7

Banking automation: KEBA was again able to increase its share of the ATM markets in Germany and Austria. Furthermore, a solid foothold has also been established in Italy, which is a relatively new market for KEBA banking automation. This also applies to Romania, although here KEBA has long had strong roots in the banking sector. Quality and availability constitute major banking automation priorities and therefore increasing importance is being attached to overall costs and not merely the most favourable price. KEBA is regarded as the branch benchmark for stability and availability with regard to self-service banking machines and for the company this represents confirmation that its investments in quality assurance, ongoing further technical development and perfect support are paying dividends. Gerhard Luftensteiner: Apart from their design and usability, above all the quality and reliability of our products convince our customers, who include savings banks, international institutes and large banks. Postal goods automation: Postal and logistics companies continue to feel a strong upswing in the goods market and growth in online mail order trading presents them with certain challenges. The main task is to deal with the problem of the last mile in the goods delivery process and provide customers with an increasing number of appropriate services. With automated locker boxes that allow round-the-clock goods dispatch and collection, KEBA offers a cost-efficient and reliable solution for first and last mile automation. KEBA has more than 13 years of experience in postal goods automation and the world s largest installation basis in this area. Indeed, postal companies and logistics suppliers are employing locker boxes from KEBA right across Europe. Among KEBA s most important customers in this segment is the Austrian Post Office, which KEBA has been supplying with so-called collection stations since In addition, the company has received interesting enquiries from around the world along with many international projects. 8

Energy automation Gerhard Luftensteiner is convinced that the new e-vehicles from the large German car manufacturers will greatly enhance the attractiveness of e-mobility. KEBA already entered this branch some years ago and has deliberately invested in expanding its energy automation business segment. In the meantime, KEBA charging stations have not only been supplied to virtually every European country, but also the USA, Canada, Japan and China. Apart from large automotive manufacturers, 80 per cent of the Austrian and 50 per cent of the German energy suppliers have opted for wallboxes from Linz. As a consequence, KEBA is one of the top three e-mobility infrastructure suppliers worldwide and 16,000 charging stations are already in operation across the globe. Highly efficient and user-friendly control units for alternative heating, which are employed by leading heating system manufacturers, form the second focal point in this business segment.
