RFID Conference in Struer, 12-13th October 2011
Summary CAEN group overview CAEN RFID products Cold Chain Case Histories
CAEN: from High Energy Physics to RFID Founded in 1980, Headquarters in Viareggio (Italy) R&D Division at the forefront of technology Worldwide leadership manufacturing power supplies and data acquisition electronics for physics detectors (CERN s supplier) Spin-offs: Microelectronics-Aerospace (1995), RFID (2003) 90 Employers: 78 (Nuclear), 12 (RFID)
CAEN RFID at a glance The first Italian company providing UHF RFID products Key player in the EU RFID scenario (EPCglobal, ETSI ) Customers in manufacturing, logistics, transport, healthcare, fashion, retail Totally in-house HW, SW & support skills Key partner in EU funded projects An added value manufacturer
Headquarters in Viareggio (Italy) CAEN Locations Branches Viareggio Elba island San Francisco New York Distributors
Why the RFID boom only now? Global standards High read range => new applications Low tag s cost => item level Big company interest (DoD, WalMart, Metro, DHL)
CAEN RFID products
CAEN easy2read Family Embedded Fixed Application Oriented
CAEN easy2log Family Huge amount of samples (4000 or 8000) Long battery life (from 1 up to 5 years) High accuracy (0.1 C typical) Multiple configurable alarms Standard RFID interface Fast data download Friendly manual interface Remaining shelf life, ETA and MKT calculation
Different levels of analysis Fast temperature check by LED signal Deeper analysis by RFID readings Alarm bits for immediate checking Histogram data for fast analysis Full temperature history for detailed analysis
Cold Chain Case Histories
Food
Fresh Vegetable Monitoring Customer: SydGront (Sweden) System Integrator: SmartSense (Norway) Adopted RFID devices: CAEN RFID A927Z temperature logger, handheld readers Object: Fresh vegetable monitoring during storage and transportation (from producer to wholesaler) Temperature Range: 2-4 C Video available on the web
High Quality Chocolate Monitoring by Lindt & Sprüngli Customer: Lindt & Sprüngli System Integrator: Ubigrate Adopted RFID devices: CAEN RFID A927Z temperature logger, portal readers
High Quality Chocolate Monitoring Project Overview Temperatures monitoring during storage and transport in order to guarantee high quality standards The process covers several weeks and the temperature is recorded every hours Portal reader at the terminal too At the end of the process the CAEN temperature loggers are returned to Lindt & Sprüngli. There, the recorded temperatures are read out and saved automatically into the system Web-based system
Pharmaceuticals
Temperature-sensitive products overview (I) Temperature variations during handling and transport may destroy the active components of pharmaceuticals Vaccines and biologicals are very sensitive Reduced effectiveness could be undetected by healthcare staff or patients Approximately one fifth of the total pharmaceutical market (about US$ 650 billion) is represented by temperature-sensitive products
Temperature-sensitive products overview (II) The vast majority of drugs and vaccines need to be shipped usually between 2 C and 8 C 70% of the most expensive product are temperature-sensitive (up to US$ 6000) So far, the most important authorities (FDA, WHO and EMEA) only issued recommendations Recently, the Health Canada's Inspectorate introduced a guidelines for temperature control of drug products
Sensitive Medicines Monitoring by Medlog Medlog (subsidiary of Portuguese pharmaceutical distributor Cooprofar) ensures that drugs are stored at the proper temperature from the time they are received from suppliers until they are delivered to some customers 350 suppliers, 1000 customers, 6 warehouses System Integrator: Creative Systems Adopted RFID devices: CAEN RFID A927Z temperature loggers, handheld readers
Sensitive Medicines Monitoring by Medlog Project Overview As the containers are moved through the warehouse and are delivered to customers in Medlog's vehicles, temperature data is stored on the tag At destination, the driver downloads and transmits the data to a database (via GPRS) The computer system analyzes the information and sends an alarm to the driver's handheld device in case of temperature issue If the driver sees an alarm, he knows not to deliver the medication to the pharmacy without first consulting a manager Web-based system
Real-Time Temperature Monitoring by DHL Overview (I) The standard methods were not able to alert the customers in advance DHL pharmaceutical customers asked for expanding the range of temperature-controlled logistics services it offered RFID technology enables a real-time temperature monitoring using RFID smart sensor tags within shipping containers and readers located at critical stages of the shipment
Real-Time Temperature Monitoring by DHL Overview (II) Setup strategic checkpoints, where the shipment can either change its mode of transportation (e.g., from road to air), go into storage or some other change of status The RFID system checks and reports the temperature of the shipment at every supply chain checkpoint and DHL knows in advance if there is a problem This procedure enables the company to stop the shipment and initiate a new one with minimal impact on the customer
Real-Time Temperature Monitoring by DHL Components Smart Sensor Tag RFID readers Logistic Services
Real-Time Temperature Monitoring by DHL Smart Sensor Tag Memory size: 4000 samples Battery life up to 1.5 years Temperature range: -20 C to 70 C; Accuracy 0.1 C typical Configurable alarms for ETA, MKT, shelf life prediction and up to 16 temperature ranges Programmable sampling interval and start delay Manual interface for start/stop and check status Gen2 compliance Up to 10 mt. read range Unique ID and EPC code
Real-Time Temperature Monitoring by DHL RFID Reader Multiregional (ETSI or FCC via SW) Programmable RF power in 15 levels EPC C1G2/ISO C Compliant Integrated circular polarized antenna Power and communication via USB A4 size
Real-Time Temperature Monitoring by DHL Logistic Services Complete overview of all SmartSensor tags Structure and filter function to select by date, number User-friendly, quick monitoring of the temperature status of the shipment notification when sensor is read out Download of detailed data (e.g. XML) Status report: how long the product was subjected to what temperatures Graphic presentation of the temperature sequence Temperature threshold alerts via Detailed information on alarms
Real-Time Temperature Monitoring by DHL Key Benefits Ability for pharma customers to proactively respond to shipment problems in transit (down to package level) Improved customer satisfaction Low cost service (comparing with good value) Applicable for air, sea & road freight Web based customer information Alert and delivery notifications Easy handling: No SW installations or updates Data availability by Web browser only Reduction of fixed costs due to outsourced process Enabler of RFID benefits in logistics
