2 Barge Traffic System
Barge Traffic System What? Free web application developed by Port of Antwerp in close cooperation with the container barge sector Slot demand system for container barges - Resulting in scheduled terminal visits for each barge operator - Implying efficient container barge handling Target group - Barge operators - Terminal operators 9
Barge Traffic System Why? Taking into account that a container barge calls 8 container terminals on an average port stay, there was a clear necessity to develop a coordinated approach in order to harmonise barge handling in the port. BEFORE BTS COMPLEX process of container barge handling Multiple working methods Poor communication No transparency No coordinated approach SINCE BTS SIMPLIFIED process of container barge handling One working method One central communication platform Transparency Harmonised approach
Barge Traffic System Instream Efficient container handling 6 innovative barge projects in the port with the aim to: Raise the efficiency and reduce the transit times of inland navigation Promote the use of this mode In close cooperation with the different stakeholders

Barge Traffic System Evolution January 2007 Start of BTS June 2012 Voluntary registration of 80% of container volume in BTS September 2012 Mandatory use for all TO s and BO s Regulation issued by the Harbourmaster BTS-charter: set of rules to use BTS correctly February 2013 Launch of BTS % use by TO s and BO s May 2015 Launch of adapted BTS on the Upper-Rhine
