Go with the flow - instead of being stuck in a jam. The way to the future is multimodal

390 trucks on their way to the customer. What you can't see is the section of motorway where the traffic is again so congested that it's not moving anywhere. And you can't see all the trucks that have been affected either, causing delivery times to run late. On the water everything's moving along nicely. Not just over long distances but also on the inland waterways and in shortsea shipping too. Shortsea and inland shipping are integrated into the intermodal concept as particularly economical and high-value elements of the national and European transport chains.

Getting there faster - more environmentally too. Road freight transport in Europe Anybody trying to get a head start on the roads nowadays, often has to get to the back of the queue because the volume of traffic in Europe is growing all the time. Looking at the current trends, it would appear that inner-european freight transport is expected to grow by 70 percent in the EU-15 by the year 2020, and in the new member states even by as much as 95 percent. Developing more flexible transport alternatives has now become key to avoiding economic bottlenecks and in continuing to ensure deliveries arrive on time. This explains why so many hauliers and the forwarding industry are sourcing intermodal concepts nowadays. With the right combination of different modes of transport, they not only ensure the way ahead is clear but they also generate new value-added potential for their customers as well. Noise, emissions and energy consumption Nowadays, forwarding agents are demanding solutions from their transport and logistics service providers which are not only economical, but are also environmentally-friendly too. This explains the special importance accorded the intelligent networking of modes of transport. In the context of intermodal transport concepts, waterways and rail networks provide numerous ecological benefits. Alternative modes of transport can certainly score on points when it comes to low noise generation, particularly waterways. They only ever pass residential buildings at a distance, if at all. The same applies to energy consumption - and associated pollutant emissions - transport of goods by ship fares appreciatively better. In primary energy consumption, inland waterway vessels and rail also achieve significantly lower values than those of trucks.

What can go multimodal? We know what's what. Modal shift potentials are value-added potentials Many of the major European industrial regions are located close to the coast or within immediate proximity to waterways. Very often, it is exactly this very proximity to water which means that costly kilometres of roads can be avoided. This explains why shortsea and inland waterway transport has gained in importance, for example, on routes between countries bordering the North and Baltic Sea as well as in the Mediterranean and Black Sea. By integrating alternative modes of transport - particularly during seasonal HGV-shortages - more effective and reliable connections are provided including those to peripheral European regions as well, and which allow inexpensive and environmentally-friendly freight transport. Information, analysis, project management Waterways and rail networks pay off in more ways than just with large, heavy and bulky goods and bulk shipments. A variety of opportunities to optimise the supply chain are also opened up in the industrial and consumer goods sectors in factoryfactory or factory-warehouse transportation by container too. As a general rule, rail and water are particularly suited to mid- to large volumes which regularly flow across long distances from one constant starting point to the same constant target destination (pipeline effect). This is especially true of shipments which are able to be consolidated and subsequently forwarded by container as a complete shipment. Do you see the modal shift potential for your cargo? We would be happy to act as a neutral partner, analysing your freight structure free-of-charge and providing you with information on appropriate providers. European freight flow can benefit from inland waterways and shortsea shipping. Industrial regions in Europe Shortsea and inland waterways

Combine the strengths of the modes of transport. Ship and rail in the context of intermodal transport chains Welcome on board: In meeting the processing needs of the products, there are a number of modes of transport available which satisfy the special requirements and, depending on use, carry the maximum of benefits. For shortsea and inland waterway transportation, there is a large fleet of individual ships available for all types of cargo. They are especially suitable for large, heavy and bulky goods as well as for containers, bulk and other mass-commodity transports. With Roll on/roll off ships, trailers accompanied by traction engines or unaccompanied transport containers can also be integrated into an intermodal concept. The pallet-wide, foot high cube container is a practical alternative to road trailers. These have a capacity for 30 to 33 euro-pallets depending on type. European trains operate across an extensive rail network reaching all the way to the ports and the factory and warehouses of trade and industry.

Rethink for the future - reroute for success. Foto: Bartlomiej Kwieciszewski - FOTOLIA Intermodal know-how creates new perspectives Rethink, reroute! In order to develop holistic transport solutions tailored to the needs of the market, logisticians with intermodal skills are called for. In collaboration with a large number of companies and organisations, our experience shows: The sustainability formula for logistics of the future is through international cooperation and intermodal structuring. At the same time, success rests more than ever on the knowledge of the individual decision-maker regarding options and conditions for integration of rail and waterways in European supply chains. In contrast to the congested road system, these provide a wealth of usable capacities and allow design of the transport chain to be considerably more flexible than pure lorry-handling services. In addition, easing congestion on the roads helps to show the transport and logistics industry in a more positive light. After all, there is a very good reason why the modal shift of goods to alternative modes of transport is also being supported by numerous European Union funding programmes.

Ensuring your customers are supplied on time while optimising your costs? The SPC is a central contact partner for all companies and organisations who are interested in new ways with alternative modes of transport. In dialogue with politics, industry, trade and forwarding agents, we develop intermodal logistics solutions in Germany and the whole of Europe. With the right combination of different modes of transport, we not only ensure the way ahead is clear but we also generate new value-added potential. For example, the projects supported and implemented by the SPC not only lead to a reduction in road congestion, they also lead to greater economic success of the company - and ultimately to a positive effect on our environment. As a member in the European Shortsea Network, our capabilities reach across all European countries with a coastline or navigable waterways.
