5 The Baltic Sea Region Countries The Baltic Sea: o Is a sea of the Atlantic Ocean, enclosed by Scandinavia, Finland, the Baltic countries, and the North European Plain. o Is connected by artificial waterways to the White Sea via the White Sea Canal and to the German Bight of the North Sea via the Kiel Canal. 5
6 The Baltic Sea Region as part of Europe The European Commission States: The Baltic Sea continues to be one of Europe's most vulnerable areas. [ ] Divisions from the past are still being overcome. Research, innovation and trade links need to be reinforced, while transport and energy connections have big gaps the eastern and northern parts of the Region are still too often isolated from the rest of the EU. 6

17 EMMA Appointed as Flagship Project in the Policy Area Transport European Union Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region (EUSBSR) EUSBSR is the first macro-regional strategy in Europe. It provides an integrated framework for improving: - environmental condition of the sea, - transport bottlenecks and energy interconnections, - development of competitive markets across borders, - common networks for research and innovation. The flagship status reflects the importance the European Commission attaches to the further development of inland navigation in the Baltic Sea Region. 17
