Harvest Close A NEW ALDI FOOD STORE FOR BINGHAM A new Aldi Aldi, the award-winning discount food retailer, is proposing to introduce a new food store in on Nottingham Road. The site is currently occupied by Garage, Foley Books and three residential properties. Both Garage and Foley Books are currently trading and will continue to do so throughout the planning process. If Aldi is granted planning permission, both businesses will close prior to Aldi commencing work on site. The proposed new Aldi food store in would provide: Up to 40 new local jobs as well as additional roles during construction and supply chain opportunities A multi-million-pound investment into the local area A vibrant, modern neighbourhood food store Improved shopping choice for the residents of, offering high-quality deeply discounted produce The opportunity for linked trips between the new store and other nearby businesses and independent retailers in Town Centre Convenient access, as well as free customer car parking Towards Town Centre Nottingham Road Towards Nottingham Aerial view The existing site The existing site MORE CHOICE FOR RESIDENTS IN BINGHAM As communities continue to feel the pinch, consumers are increasingly looking for better-value brands to help make their money go further during difficult times. It is important that residents have access to a wide range of shopping facilities. Aldi currently has stores in Nottingham, Grantham and Newark. These are popular in the communities they serve and are all located over nine miles from the proposal site in. Aldi believes that there is demand for a new store in that would reduce the need for people to travel out of the area to complete their food shopping, helping to retain spending in the town.
The proposal The Aldi food store The proposed store will have a net sales area of approximately 1,254m 2, with free customer car parking. The proposal comprises a single-storey building with a flat roof. The building has been carefully designed to sit comfortably within the site and to be in-keeping with the surrounding area. Local employment opportunities The new food store will create up to 40 new jobs, including managerial positions, as well as construction roles and supply chain opportunities. Aldi aims to provide flexible jobs for local people and aims for all of its store managers to be local. Complementing the local area Unlike other larger retailers, Aldi has a unique offering and does not act as a one-stop shop. Our stores meet only a proportion of customers convenience needs, meaning they will continue to use other local shops such as the nearby Sainsbury s Local, Co-operative Food and independent stores, to fulfil their grocery shopping requirements. Proposed colour elevations
Design and landscaping design The development has been designed to provide a high quality and attractive discount food store. Aldi has carefully considered its proposals to ensure that the scale of the building is in-keeping with its surroundings and sits comfortably within its location. The new store will be single-storey in height with a flat roof to ensure that the building does not impose on neighbouring houses. A combination of materials will be used including white render and high levels of glazing offering a contemporary design. High-quality timber fencing will be installed around the site boundaries with acoustic fencing around the loading area to further reduce noise levels. CGI of proposed store landscaping Aldi takes great pride in the appearance of its stores, with landscaping a key part of creating an attractive and visually appealing development. New landscaping is proposed around the site boundary to enhance the setting of the store. This will include a mix of low level, hardy shrubs, providing year-round cover.
Highways and car parking Access Vehicle access to the proposed store will be provided from Nottingham Road via a new entrance. The site is well-situated for a new food store, easily accessible for the community and other local customer catchment areas such as Aslockton, Newton and East Bridgford. Traffic The traffic impact of the proposed development will be examined through a Transport Assessment, which will be prepared as part of the planning application. This assessment will look at the operation of the local highway network, including Nottingham Road, with and without the proposed development in place. Car parking The proposed store will have approximately 107 parking spaces, including six disabled and six parent & child spaces. The car park lighting will be switched off at night, when the store is closed, to prevent disturbance to neighbouring residential properties. As part of Aldi s commitment to promoting sustainable modes of transport, covered cycle parking will be provided near to the store entrance. Deliveries An Aldi food store is a modest scale supermarket. Aldi stocks a carefully selected range of approximately 1,500 lines, compared to a typical supermarket such as Asda or Sainsbury s, which stock in excess of 20,000 lines. As a result, an Aldi food store will generally require only two main deliveries per day, supplemented by one or two smaller deliveries for bread or milk. Aldi operates a closely managed servicing arrangement for each of its stores. All manoeuvring takes place within the site and a unique delivery ramp arrangement removes the need for external activity. This process is not only efficient but also reduces noise disturbance to neighbouring properties. Proposed site plan
Local issues Existing site Being a part of the local community Aldi stores are often located close to local communities. As a result, Aldi has developed a number of community friendly practices: Aldi aims for its store managers to be local, which allows them to react quickly and sympathetically to any local issues The unique delivery system used by Aldi enables products to be transferred directly from the vehicles straight into the store, without the need for external movement of goods. This reduces external activity and the potential for inconvenience to neighbours Unlike most supermarkets, which operate extended or 24hr opening periods, Aldi stores typically open between 8am and 10pm Monday to Saturday with opening hours on Sunday between 10am and 4pm Aldi is committed to being a responsible neighbour and will work closely with the local community to ensure that any disturbance is kept to a minimum from construction to when the store is open Scheme benefits Improved shopping choice for residents in, offering high-quality deeply discounted produce Up to 40 new local jobs as well as additional jobs during construction and supply chain opportunities A multi-million-pound investment into the local area Convenient access, as well as free customer car parking The opportunity for linked trips between the proposed Aldi food store and other nearby local businesses including those in Town Centre Reduced need for residents to travel out of the area to complete their food shopping
