3 CL2 A quick Introduction Green Logistics and Co-Modality: Treated as a unified concept in Cluster 2 Co-modality refers to the use of different modes on their own and in combination so as to obtain an optimal and sustainable utilisation of resources Green Logistics is the integrated management of all the activities required to move products through the supply chain in a way that it reduces environmental impacts and meets customer requirements at minimum costs Both co-modality and green logistics opt for a resourceefficient and sustainable future of logistics BESTFACT 3

4 CL2 What does Cluster 2 cover Transport system efficiencies Focus on the optimal use of infrastructure (nodes and network) Including transport planning and optimisation, demand management, intermodal services and data collection Energy efficiencies of conventionally fuelled transport assets Focus on vehicle solutions for optimised fuel use Including, loading units and vehicle size, emission standards, engine, powertrains, and driver training. Alternative fuels and propulsion systems Focus on the adoption of alternative fuels and systems Including alternative practices, market introduction, business models and financing schemes BESTFACT 4

5 CL2 Four years of data collection For the last four years Cluster 2 Invited all BESTFACT partners to provide best practices on co-modalility and green logistics Collaborated with numerous research, logistics and industrial stakeholders Collected 60 inventory cases (not fully analysed) and 26 in-depth cases (fully presenting the solution) Presented all cases (inventory and in-depth) in Quick Information Sheets (easy access to the cases via the BESTFACT website) BESTFACT 5

11 CL2 Lessons learnt & recommendations Drivers to implement best practice: mainly associated with costs aspects (e.g. fuel costs reduction) and reduction of emissions => win-win situation when both aspects can be achieved other cases: specific regulations (e.g. CO 2 reduction plans) Incentives are used to promote and support solutions deployment and rollout (especially for high-cost solutions) Longer term commitments and involved of stakeholders is essential Collaboration of involved parties and information to related parties (e.g. local authorities) from the beginning (inception phase) to the end (implementation/ full operation) Motivated companies and employees will achieve better results (challenge is how to maintain this on the longer term) BESTFACT 11

12 CL2 Lessons learnt & recommendations In some cases the available infrastructure needs to be adapted, causing financial and regulatory barriers Use of tools (e.g. CO 2 calculators) helps in the decision making process and transport planning Use of tools is also helpful for monitoring the short-term and long-term impacts of the solutions The scalability of the solutions depends on several factors such as demand, network facilities etc. Link to SMEs Direct involvement (as users / customers / partners) Affected by the practice (providing affordable solutions, better use of equipment) Potential (to use services, direct involvement as clients or solutions providers) BESTFACT 12
