Lessons from the neighbor's field EPCglobal middleware for supply chains Orange Labs Marc-Antoine Mouilleron, Research & Development WIRELESS FACTORY WORKSHOP December ETSI, Sophia Antipolis, France
What is EPCglobal EPCglobal is developing standards for exchanging information on merchandises and consumer goods in supply chains, from manufacturer to retail "EPCglobal leads the development of industry-driven standards for the Electronic Product Code (EPC) to support the use of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) in today s fast-moving, information rich, trading networks." Not the only standard! See other projects coordinated by ETSI: Global RFID Interoperability Forum for Standards (GRIFS) CASAGRAS: with international partners representing Europe, the USA, China, Japan and Korea
EPCglobal key principles Exchange Electronic Product Code (EPC) data, identifying each unique product item software architecture Event-driven, web services standard layered components e.g. Application Level Events (ALE) for reading systems interface, Electronic Product Code Information Services (EPC) for information databases (capture and query WDSL) free implementation Can be legacy, COTS 1 or hosted service as long as interfaces are respected adapted to multiple tagging technologies and sectors Optical barcodes, RFID tags Business vocabularies: retail, pharmacy, automotive, etc. (1) COTS: Common Off-The-Shelf
EPCglobal architecture source:
Purchase order YE567 details Data exchanges between EPCglobal layers Capturing Manufacturer Define enrichment rules and communication with other applications Define readers and events cycles Examples: Reader: portico xxx, address Event Cycle xxx: receiving_pallet Report xxx: detail_of_pallet Subscribe to report xxx free WS EPC capture Capture application Application Level Event LLRP RP or proprietary Reading system EPC repository HTTP POST HTTP POST or WS Send business-enriched EPC events Time xxx, OBSERVE Read point Portico xxx, gate 6 Location: receiving area, logistics site Transactions: Purchase Order YE567, Advanced Ship Notice 23 Step: receiving, Disposition: returned Receive reports of reading events Examples: Time xxx, Reader portico xxx SSCC xxx GIAI xxx, xxx, xxx SGTIN xxx, xxx, xxx, xxx, Mainly UHF Tag Data Read RFID tag data Examples: Serial Shipping Container Code for container Global Returnable Asset Identifier for wood pallet Global Individual Asset Identifiers for parcels Global Trade Item Numbers for items
Data exchanges between EPCglobal layers Querying: polling or subscribing WS? Poll/subscribe EPC events Supplier Query application #2 Which EPC for this product? DNS ONS Supplier * Discovery Service Poll EPC events Examples: EPC object: xxx Reader: portico xxx Business step: inventory WS EPC address ONS Root Subscribe to EPC events Examples: EPC object: xxx Reader: portico xxx Business step: inventory EPC query WS HTTP POST ONS Manufacturer EPC repository EPC query Manufacturer free Query application #1 Receive business-enriched EPC events Time xxx, OBSERVE Read point Portico xxx, gate 6 Location: receiving area, logistics site Transactions: Purchase Order YE567, Advanced Ship Notice 23 Step: receiving, Disposition: returned
EPCglobal and RFID middleware in supply chain EPC Transport B commissioning packing shipping EPC Supplier 1 loading in transit including temperature and GPS EPC receiving Transport A inventory EPCglobal services commissioning packaging Query item status: Components (pedigree) Sensor data (active tags) e.g. respect of frost chain Quantities in warehouse (inventory data) Parcels, pallets, containers Current business step Transactions (e.g. purchase order) Counterfeiting? Carbon footprint? End consumer and privacy? EPC Manufacturer storing EPC Supplier 2 in transit inventory commissioning packaging shipping repackaging shipping
Real life usual issues We are an emerging country: no Internet access! EPC Supplier 1 I use EDI, why would I use something else? I use a COTS or legacy product that does not include EPC. How can I mix data from sensors with data from p a s s i v e R F I D? How can I extend EDI data with RFID information? EPCglobal services W h a t a b o u t i n t e g r a t i o n c o s t s a n d impact on my b u s i n e s s p r o c e s s e s? Some parts are missing yet: multiple interconnected root ONS, Discovery Services, access rights management, RFID is too expensive. I want to use other supports for information.? EPC Transport B Supplier 2 I don't want to use a foreign standard like EPC or UHF band, I use my own national standard. W h a t d o y o u m e a n b y "Advanced Ship Notice"? This is too hot here for RFID tags! Transport A RFID tags have b e e n d a m a g e d.? EPC W hy can't I read RFID data here? Who grants access t o m y d a t a? Manufacturer I can't fully read parcels with liquids or m etal inside. I have interference between RFID and my GPRS access! M y h a n d - h e l d reader reads too many RFID tags at t h a t d i s t a n c e. I have a low reading ratio!
Requirements Physical (wireless) Don't forget the obvious! e.g. no impact on systems Operability 100% reading ratio, tunable whatever the environment Interoperability no interference Security rogue protection Best practices where to put tags? interaction with wireless environment Middleware Don t' forget the obvious! e.g. internet access Operability web services (SOAP/REST) APIs event-driven architecture Interoperability common vocabularies gateways between different standards Security access rights Best practices how to write business rules? interaction with Information Systems
