2 2.4.1 Animals and plants in habitats. Can fish live on the land? Can bird live in a pond? Plants and animals are living things. All animals need food, water, air and Ua place to live in. Think and Discuss Where do these animals live? Can they live in the same place? Why?
3 Animals and plants live in places where their needs are met. A habitat has everything plants or animals need. A habitat is a place where living things live There are many habitats around the world. Activity: Arctic habitat Water habitat Forest habitat Desert habitat
4 Animals come in different sizes, have different body coverings and have a different numbers of legs. We can classify animals into five groups. Mammals Fish Bird Amphibians Reptiles Mammals Have: hair or fur Feed milk to their babies Birds Have : feathers two wings Beak Fish Live in water Have fins to swim Gils to breath Amphibians Live in water and on land Have damp skin Reptiles Have dry skin covered with scales 4
5 All animals have characteristic or features that make them suited to where they live. Look at this duck. Think how it is suited to its environment. Activity 1: You will need: Duck feather water. Steps: 1- Pour water on the feather. 2- Record your observation Feather is (absorbent water proof) material. Activity 2: Look at the pictures. Compare between the body of the duck and the boat How does the shape of duck s body to live in water?
6 Activity 3: Compare between the webbed feet and paddle How does the shape of webbed feet help duck to live in water? Activity 4: Look at the picture of duck beak. How does the shape of beak help duck to live in water?
7 ALLAH created ducks with: Feathers that are waterproof. It can swim, in order to move in the water. It has webbed feet, to help it move in the water. Its beak can scoop and peck at pond weed. A camel is one of the animals that we can find in Qatar. Activity 1: Think and Discuss What is the camel s habitat like? During the discussion include include a comment about: Desert. Little or no water. Very sandy. High temperatures. ا ف ل ا ي نظ ر ون ا ل ى ال ا ب ل ك ي ف خ ل ق ت Allah says in the Quran Do they not look at the camels, how they are created? (88/17) 7
8 Activity 1: Look at the pictures. Compare between the boy eyelash and camel eyelash How does the camel eyelash help it to live in desert? Activity 2: Look at the pictures. How does the structure of nose help camel to live in desert? Activity 3: Look at the pictures. Why camel has thick lips?
9 Activity 4: You will need: Two types of shoes - Steps: 1- Walk on the sand wearing each pair of shoes (once with the football boots and once with the flat soled trainers). Observe the depth of your steps. Observation: Which Shoe left a deeper imprint in the sand? A Camel has big feet to make it (easier harder) to walk on sand. Other features that help camels to live in desert are: Sandy colored skin for camouflage. Can live without water for 2 3 months. 9

11 2.4.1 Life science Plants are living things. They need water and air. If they do not get these things, they can t live. Think Can you name a plant that lives in the desert? A cactus is a plant which lives in the desert. What is the weather like in it s habitat? They are found in areas with: Little rainfall. Extreme heat. Poor soil and sometimes sandy conditions. 11

Predict what you think you will find living in the flower bed and what you will find living on and around the tree. Visit the two areas at different times of the day.tick BOXES that apply to you! 16 Activity: Creating Materials: a carton box, paper, glue, craft supplies, plastic models of animals and plants Process Skills: Making and using models Collecting and using data Observing Steps 1- Choose a habitat. 2- Find out what animals and plants live in that habitat. 3- Make a model of the habitat. Show the plants and animals that live there. For example: You can make a model of pond habitat Put some water in a shallow bowel Put some plastic models of animals with pictures of plants. 16
17 Project: Can you draw an imaginary animal; it could look like a fish, a bird or a snake, or it can be a mixture of different types of animal parts! For example, You may draw an animal that has a fish s body, a bird s wings and claws like a tiger because this animal can: live in the sea, fly in the air, dive and catch food in its claws. You must be able to explain why the animal looks as it does, and what features it has that allow it to: do what it does; eat what it eats; move the way it does what kind of skin does it have? You can do this project by: painting, collage or drawing plus three or four sentence explaining where the animal lives and its key features. 17
