1 Alternative Spring Break Participant Application Thank you for your interest in Alternative Spring Breaks! We are excited to offer six trips addressing different critical social issues. Following application will provide a brief description of all our trips and will give you basic logistical information for our pre-trip meetings. Requirements: All Alt SPring Break participants must completely read and agree to the Participant Agreement on the next page. In addition to all the details listed there, you MUST also be available for: ASB Kickoff Event - Monday 11/27/17 3-5pm ASB Pre trip meetings - Mondays during the semester, starting after the Kickoff above (not including finals week) from 3-5pm. Every day of the Alt Spring Break trip (3/18-3/24). Service projects before and after spring break. Dates to be announced, but an average of 15 hours before the trip and 5 hours after the trip will be planned for you in addition to pre-trip meetings. We will take all schedules into account when planning service projects. The Trips: Community Based Food Systems - Portland, OR Physical Requirements: Ability to navigate at least 4-6 hours of work every day. Traveling to and from public transportation sites. Travel on paved and unpaved surfaces, carrying equipment for up to one mile. Ability to lift pounds, stoop and bend for up to an hour at a time. Work outdoors in a variety of weather including heat, cold, rain, snow, and sun. Possible Activities: Build and repair walkways, garden maintenance, sorting food pantry stock, office work, cleaning and maintenance in doors, help with river clean up and restoration, plant trees, remove invasive plant species. Homelessness - Seattle, WA Physical Requirements: Ability to navigate at least 4-6 hours of work every day. Traveling to and from public transportation sites. Travel on paved and unpaved surfaces, carrying equipment for up to one mile. Ability to lift pounds, stoop and bend for up to an hour at a time. Work outdoors in a variety of weather including heat, cold, rain, snow, and sun. Note: in the past, hostel lodging has not been wheel chair accessible, and did not have an elevator. We are working to find the most accessible lodging possible. Note: meals have been readily available for most dietary needs. Immigration in the United States - San Diego, CA Physical Requirements:Ability to navigate at least minutes a day on paved and unpaved trails, lift pounds, stoop and bend for up to an hour at a time, work outside in the sun, ride long distances in vehicles, travel long distances without vehicles. Possible Activities: Perform water drops, park maintenance, distribute aid packages, office work, cleaning, etc. LGBTQ+ Issues and History - San Francisco, CA Physical Requirements: Ability to navigate between two and five miles per day on paved and unpaved hills, work inside and outside, in various weather conditions including heat, cold, rain, and sun. Work six to seven hours per day, stooping and bending up to an hour at a time. Animal Advocacy and Welfare- Kanab, UT Student Cost approximately $200 Physical Requirements: Ability to navigate two to five miles per day on paved and unpaved walkways, work outside in various types of terrain that may be uneven (rock, dirt, gravel, grass, pavement, sidewalks, etc), life, carry, or move pounds, work long hours (4 hour morning shifts, lunch breaks, and 4 hour afternoon shifts with short breaks), must be around various types of animals (i.e. birds, horses, dogs, cats, pigs,. sheep, wild animals, etc.), Page 1 of 5 Alternative Spring Break Participant Application
2 may be exposed to loud noises (i.e. animals), ride long distances in cars. Possible Activities: Cleaning: washing food containers, run areas, soiled surfaces, etc. Animal care: Walk/exercise animals, prep meals, feeding, grooming, etc. Special projects: painting, constructions, landscaping, pulling weeds, clearing paths, raking, shoveling, digging/filling holes, etc. Organizing for Change: How community non-profits work toward positive social change - Salt Lake City Student Cost: Free! Physical Requirements: Ability to navigate between two and five miles per day on paved and unpaved hills, work inside and outside, in various weather conditions including heat, cold, rain, and sun. Work six to seven hours per day, stooping and bending up to an hour at a time. Trip prices include all air and/or ground transportation, lodging, and meal costs. For additional information or to discuss any accommodations, please contact Brandon Devlin at: brandon.devlin@slcc.edu or Page 1 Alternative Breaks Participant Agreement and Application Process Please read this section carefully After your application has been turned in, it will be reviewed and accepted applicants will be notified. If accepted, participants will be required to submit an initial, non-refundable deposit of $100 within two weeks (10 businiss days) of your acceptance. Payment may be made through a check addressed to SLCC, cash, or credit card online (please contact brandon.devlin@slcc.edu for more information about payment methods and requirements). Payment plans are available on a case by case basis. If you are selected to attend an Alternative Spring Break and fail to make the initial $100 deposit then your space on the trip will be forfeit. Deposits will not be refunded for any reason unless the trip is cancelled by the Thayne Center. The remainder of the trip cost is due by Monday, March 2nd, If you are on the waiting list and are selected, you must pay the minimum $100 deposit within 2 weeks (10 business days) of your acceptance onto an Alt Break. If you fail to pay the required amount your space on the trip may be forfeit and given to another participant on the wait list. If you are planning on a trip that requires a flight, we will be making arrangements as soon as possible. Once flight arraignments are made, you are responsible for and agree to pay the cost of the flight if you cancel or do not come on the trip. If a substitute for your spot can be found, we will notify you and you will instead be responsible for the fees to change the ticket name and any other fees the airline may charge such as an increase in flight cost for the substitution. We will place a hold on your ability to register for SLCC classes if these fees are not paid. If you cancel or do not attend the trip, you are responsible for and agree to pay all non-refundable trip costs in addition to the loss of your deposit. Participants must attend all scheduled pre-trip meetings. If you are not able to attend any meeting for class-related reasons, or because of an emergency please contact brandon.devlin@slcc.edu or your trips site leader as soon as possible. Trip participant groups decide the times and days of the majority of these meetings with the exception of the Alt Break Kickoff, Spring Training, and the Alt Break End of the Year Celebration. These dates will be announced later in the semester. It is expected that all participants commit to attending and fully participating in every aspect of Alternative Spring Breaks to the best of their ability.
