WHITE PAPER: A Centralized Approach to Scalable RFID Implementations Leveraging the advantages of RFID network infrastructure Summary This paper discusses the benefits and challenges of deploying centralized, next-generation RFID network infrastructure solutions to support emerging production-scale RFID management, data correlation and enterprise network integration requirements. Cutting-edge and on its own is how every successful networking technology begins. RFID was pioneered with an architecture of autonomous readers connected to business applications and underlying infrastructure through middleware. A long list of other technologies started out as autonomous solutions, but the successful ones evolved beyond middleware and became extensions of the corporate network infrastructure. RFID is no different it would never succeed beyond an interesting niche technology if it remains autonomously anchored in middleware. Strong technical and economic drivers compel the change from self-defined to centrally managed RFID solutions. As the complexity of standalone reader deployment runs up against real-world scales of production, RFID is gravitating towards the same holistic adaptations that have shaped earlier networking successes. The Intelligence to Network RFID
WHITE PAPER: A Centralized Approach to Scalable RFID Implementations Challenge Original RFID projects were typically deployed to support single applications, usually with a handful of readers communicating over dedicated links to one or maybe a few application servers. Such an architecture works fine for pilot projects and proof-of-concept exercises, but it becomes a hindrance when RFID scales up to enterprise implementations that involve many more tags, more readers, more sites and more applications. With rapid success, RFID becomes a major networking problem for the enterprise. RFID deployments across large companies will involve thousands of network-connected readers. On a global scale, RFID readers could easily become the most densely deployed and numerous network device in the world, with many analysts predicting over 100 million RFID readers connected globally within 10 years. But, before even contemplating a vision of ubiquitous RFID deployment, today's enterprises are experiencing scaling challenges for very modest deployments. In fact the issues associated with rolling out, managing and operating 5 or more readers at more than a couple of facilities are significant and most IT departments are not equipped to support field trials involving server-based RFID middleware for extended periods of time. Connectivity at such scale challenges all of a network s ability to absorb compounding demands. From radio frequency (RF) contention and bandwidth management to data management, back office integration and operational support the proliferation of RFID technology is an escalating network management challenge. It s a situation that has unfolded many times before with technologies such as switched LANs, Wi-Fi LANs, and storage-area networks (SANs). Initial deployments of these technologies relied on autonomy and middleware, but as they began to take hold in corporate networks they rapidly evolved into centralized architectures operating at today s scale. Remember Novell Netware? The ultimate middleware, Netware was its own network operating system that allowed things like file servers to be attached to the enterprise. But over time, with the layered centralization of network functions underlying TCP/IP, Netware s role has been absorbed into the network infrastructure. Today s cell phone networks are a good example of what happens on a global scale when centralized infrastructure supplants earlier point-to-point wireless radio systems. Likewise, the Internet itself is an all-time paradigm shift away from autonomous private wide area networks (WANs) to today s ubiquitous enterprise networking. The most recent example is seen in the wireless LAN market, with Cisco s WLAN systems a good case in point. Cisco WLAN access points started out as autonomous nodes, but as installations grew larger, Cisco centralized the management of multiple access nodes through a variety of WLAN Controllers. This evolution repeats itself throughout the development of information technology; and for many of the same reasons, the transition to centralized RFID infrastructure is now underway. First-Order Challenge Provisioning and Deployment When RFID installations grow beyond a handful of readers, configuring and upgrading each device becomes an operational pain. Determining coverage area, avoiding signal collision and RF interference, and setting individual reader calibrations all add to the difficulty. 2 Reva Systems
It s already clear that the trial and error method used to set up pilot sites is untenable when planning for 20 readers and then 100 readers in a single facility. Even if modest numbers of readers are deployed at individual sites, the configuration and maintenance challenges become significant when multiple sites are brought online. There s a crossover point at which disparate, unrelated devices are awkward and expensive to provision and manage. At that point, it makes better sense to merge the devices into a centralized, cohesive management infrastructure that can be plugged into existing management and operational systems. Second-Order Challenge RFID s Big-Picture View Beyond the complexity of managing autonomous devices, middleware solutions typically offer only simple filtering schemes that prevent sophisticated location correlation. Once an installation grows beyond a handful of pilot nodes, distributed intelligence actually hinders the ability to compile a big picture of the situation. Autonomous readers make data collection more difficult than it should be. Applications must reach out to each individual reader to grab the data that they need, but because RFID tag data is too raw for most purposes, it has to be processed and cleaned before applications can make use of it. Middleware serves that function, and sometimes the application itself is its own middleware, akin to the Netware approach. A better solution would connect RFID readers and enterprise applications through a network appliance that manages the traffic flow. Such a platform architecture is similar to wireless LAN controllers it allows multiple readers to be centrally managed, and it unifies data collection for all RFID applications. Enlightened use of RFID requires pulling together tag data from widely dispersed readers for a comprehensive view, and it requires easy data access for applications to draw different aspects of information from the same data stream. An RFID network aligned through centralized infrastructure can support the coordinated link between applications and physical infrastructure across multiple sites to deliver the network-wide, big-picture view. 4 WHITE PAPER: A Centralized Approach to Scalable RFID Implementations Solution Centralized RFID Network Infrastructure RFID ultimately succeeds when it becomes just the latest addition to an evolving enterprise network. Centralized management is one aspect of what s needed; the challenge also involves network integration of RFID platforms and network appliances. Most early adopters tried using RFID middleware for integration with existing infrastructure, but that approach doesn t deliver the evolutionary backbone that s needed. A new class of RFID network infrastructure products is emerging as a crystallization of what middleware attempts to do. They provide a hardware and software framework for decoupling the physical and logical requirements of RFID integration. The solution creates a go-between infrastructure layer that smoothes out the complexities of integrating RFID readers into enterprise data networks and back office systems. RFID network infrastructure products enable a repeatable architecture that can be deployed at any scale across diverse locations because it: supports standard and proprietary tag-to-reader, reader-to-network, and RFID data access protocols insulates applications from deployment complexity processes raw data enterprise-wide for presentation to a number of applications compensates for site-specific behavior to enable easily repeatable local RFID deployments enables RFID installations to be centrally managed and monitored without requiring highly skilled IT personnel in the field Reva s approach is a two-part solution. Out in the field is Reva s Tag Acquisition Processor (TAP), a standardsbased network appliance that manages groups of RFID readers. Reva s TAP provides a central control point for reader coordination, data flow and network integration. Depending on the size and distribution of readers, one or more TAPs can be used in a facility just as multiple controllers are used to cover sprawling WLAN campuses. The logical core of Reva s RFID network infrastructure approach is the Tag Acquisition Network (TAN) architecture. When readers are managed through TAP appliances, their integration with the enterprise network is manifested as a TAN. The TAN approach provides the logical infrastructure for centralizing and integrating RFID systems with the enterprise. 4 Reva Systems
Figure 2. A Tag Acquisition Network (TAN) embodies the integration of RFID infrastructure with enterprise network systems. Built on industry standards such as the EPCglobal Gen2 air interface protocol, reader-to-network protocols, and RFID data access standards, Reva's TAN architecture provides a system-wide view of an entire RFID network. Its management features can adjust RF usage, bring readers online or offline, assess data quality continuously, and pinpoint problems and their locations. The TAN leverages TAP controllers enabling users to remotely configure, monitor and manage readers at various facilities. It supports scalable network intelligence to help companies quickly deploy and tune RFID readers to site-specific requirements. It also allows RFID data to be accessed by enterprise applications that support standard and application-specific interfaces such as ALE, JMS, and SQL. It aggregates and filters RFID data by processing at the edge on Reva TAPs which can stage or pass RFID information directly on to enterprise applications such IBM WebSphere and SAP s Auto-ID Interface or mysap enterprise resource-planning application. 6 WHITE PAPER: A Centralized Approach to Scalable RFID Implementations Benefits Return on investment ultimately compels the drive to centralized RFID solutions. Configuring, monitoring, and controlling reader performance at the network level reduces overall cost of implementation while increasing its effect. Clear benefits of a centralized approach to RFID network infrastructure include: Ease of Deployment Centralized remote management capabilities are critical for production rollouts. Automated configuration and discovery is the key to a strategy that eliminates the need for skilled on-site personnel at every RFID deployment. Since networked RFID readers will be deployed in environments ranging from shop floors and retail stores to hospital rooms and warehouses, most of the people responsible for running and managing these networks will never see the readers. This makes centralized configuration and remote manageability an obvious concern for network administrators. Reader Control and RF Bandwidth Management Centralized reader management coordinates reader activity at the systems level to synchronize read schedules, avoid interference and optimize the use of the RF spectrum. RFID readers are currently designed to read hundreds of tags per second, and each read cycle for a single reader consumes RF bandwidth. Available RF bandwidth in the 900MHz band is a finite resource that every reader in a facility must share. Readers can jam each other by reading tags at the same time, so tight control of reader operations is necessary to achieve the tag read rates that enterprises expect. RFID Data Network Capacity RFID readers have the ability to generate large volumes of redundant data that can stress the enterprise network. As RFID proliferates, there s greater potential to tax networks with increased traffic; this will make bandwidth management through correct network configuration and reader control an important factor for enterprise deployments. Location Management RFID data is most useful when an application can apply meaningful context to it. Reva s solution enables a concept called location virtualization that allows tag data to be associated with business locations. This insulates the applications from the specifics of the data-capture devices themselves. By de-coupling readers from the logical structure of business locations, the interpretation of tag data can be standardized across the enterprise. For example, a single reader s coverage may overlap several locations like adjacent dock doors, or multiple readers may cover one area like a high value item cage. Additionally, the same reader that covers a dock door to scan tags on merchandise being received may also scan tags attached to company assets that should not be leaving through such a door. Clearly, the same reader may be serving data to more than one application disconnected from the application workflow, so it is imperative that a standard reader context can be established. 6 Reva Systems
Data Management Data management is the key to more scalable RFID application support. RFID appliances should have the ability to process tag data into a usable form and act as a clearinghouse for data being passed up through the enterprise. Reva s solution integrates with most popular reader models to deliver a standard enterprise view of tag data even though the low-level reader communications are proprietary. It also enables the use of emerging generalpurpose RFID readers with standard network-side interfaces. This is a very cost effective way of collecting data from RFID readers so it can be consolidated and used by any relevant upstream application. A robust RFID data management architecture is well positioned to leverage reader advances as standards evolve and reader options expand Critical Reliability Extreme reliability concerns are becoming one of the most important decision factors in RFID planning. Fail-safe operation is necessary because readers interact so strongly with each other, and many RFID environments are built around six-sigma standards. Reva s platforms coordinate ongoing system monitoring for errors or reader failure, and run performance diagnostics to anticipate problems in advance. The architecture helps network managers by depicting reader locations, evaluating coverage, and positioning readers and antennae as required. For non-stop operation, centralized management is the only architecture that can deliver. Lower Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) Economic imperative shapes every networking architecture. A centralized approach to RFID infrastructure pays off in the long run with its scalable survival. But that can be a difficult line-item to budget more tangible cost benefits derive from streamlined operations, ease of growth and upgrade, and investment protection. Consider that the overall expense and complexity of autonomous RFID systems has discouraged broader technology deployment. Some companies found that RFID systems tied up in early middleware cannot be easily leveraged to support other goals across the enterprise so they ve deployed just the minimum required to comply with RFID mandates. Centralized RFID network infrastructure would speed implementation and maximize the efficiency of the technology. Conclusion No technology succeeds without the centricity of a managed environment creating a whole greater than the sum of its parts. RFID network infrastructure provides an architectural solution that can be centrally managed as an extension of existing enterprise networks. This approach saves time and money on RFID deployments; it improves system performance through better integration; and it simplifies operational management over the long term for continued savings and lower overall cost of ownership.
