Freight villages among past, present and future Dr. Nicola Paradiso 1

Two-Face's Coin "There is no shortage in the world, the only problem facing us is logistics (Amartya Sen, Nobel Prize 1998) "A refrigerator is not a refrigerator, if it is located in Detroit, and is required to Houston" (J. L. Heskett) 2

Global Economy = Global Logistics Sustainability 3

As road networks become more congested, other modes of transport will need to take an increasing role. But coordinating the various modes requires more than just timetables - integration needs to span differing technical, operational and commercial cultures. 4

Early 90 The UIC s forecast Union Internationale Chemin de Fer The freight volume handled by European Railway Companies will double in the space of 20 years (Increase of transport demand) (UIC forecast) + 2,8 % vs + 0,8 % CONCLUSION Will the rail transport offer cover the increase of the total transport demand?

Early 90.. looking at the future A strong European Policy to avoid : Increase of congestion Increase of environmental problems Increase of the total transport costs Increase of the industrial products total costs Increase of the de-industrialization Decrease of the industrial sector competitiveness

Early 90 Solution Rail/Road/Sea Transport FREIGHT VILLAGES A new node inside the SUPPLY CHAIN

The FREIGHT VILLAGES are the only transport realities that offer the required infrastructures to develop: RAIL/ROAD TRANSPORT & SYNERGIC ACTIONS WITH THE PORTS That means INTERMODALITY

Organisational Structure Public--Private Partnership Public High investment costs Public Authorities support for granting planning permission in accordance with 1 policies on economic and territorial development 2 environmental policy

Infrastructures Warehouses with raised docking bays Warehouses with rail-road interchange Large-sized warehouses Public warehouses for storage Air-conditioned warehouses Intermodal terminal rail facilities

Services Customs District Post Office/Public telephones/bus service Areas for parking and loading/unloading operations Filling station with vehicle washing facilities

Advantages - 1 No heavy traffic inside the residential areas Strategic construction of logistics infrastructures Support to the Intermodality development Support to the Economic development

Advantages - 2 Connection with the road network Connection with the rail/intermodal network Transhipment availability Integrated logistics services Availability of information technology

Decrease of the total transport costs Decrease of the industrial products total costs Increase of the transport and service quality Increase of the industrial sector competitiveness Optimisation of vehicle productivity
