5 Introduction This document describes how to use the Automatic Tag Dispenser built into the 3M Conversion Station Model 711 and Model 811. The Automatic Tag Dispenser is designed to be used with the 3M RFID Tags. 3M RFID Tags Each roll of 3M RFID Tags contains either 250 or 1,000 tags. Specialty tags printed with a customer s own identification are available. Tag types Make sure that you order the correct type of tag for your equipment: The Conversion Station Model 711 only uses 3M D1 RFID Tags. The Conversion Station Model 811 (used with the 3M One-Tag RFID System) uses 3M D8 RFID Tags. All RFID Tags are 100% inspected during manufacturing. Before shipping, each tag is checked for proper function. A rejected tag is identified with a hole punched through it. Do not use tags with holes in them. In addition to the proper number of good tags for a particular size roll of tags, a roll may contain a number of rejected tags. IMPORTANT NOTE Do not bend, fold, or damage the RFID tag in any way. Such damage increases the likelihood of premature tag failure. A rejected tag is identified with a hole punched through it. Do not use tags with holes in them. If you receive a system message indicating that a tag cannot be programmed, that tag may be defective. Ask your conversion coordinator where to put any tags that are suspected of being unprogrammable. 6 Operator Tool Kit The Conversion Station comes with a tool kit (A) attached to the inside right front door. 7 Loading a roll of tags IMPORTANT NOTE Do not bend, fold, or damage the RFID tag in any way. Such damage increases the likelihood of premature tag failure. 1 Rotate the supply roll shaft until the stop lever is in the UP position (Figure 2). 1 2 Release the stop lever so that it drops down into a horizontal (straight out) position (Figure 3). Figure 2: Rotating supply shaft stop lever 3 Remove the two plastic core inserts from the supply roll shaft (Figure 3). 3 2 Figure 3: Stop lever, plastic core inserts 4 Install the plastic core inserts on each end of the roll of RFID Tags (Figure 4). 4 Figure 4: Plastic core inserts 3

8 5 Remove the tape from the RFID Tag roll (Figure 5). 5 Figure 5: Tape on roll of RFID Tags 6 Install the roll of RFID Tags onto the supply roll shaft. The leader should be coming up from the left side of the roll (Figure 6). Leave the stop lever in the horizontal (straight out) position. 6 Figure 6: Leader coming from left side 7 Thread the leader up under the curved steel spring guide plate (A) (Figure 7). The leading edge of the leader should come up through the tag feed area at the top of the Conversion Station (B). B 7 A Figure 7: Leader threaded under plate 4

9 8 Put a slight upward bend in the leader (Figure 8). 8 Figure 8: Upward bend in leader 9 Using one of the tag-threading tools located in the Operator Tool Kit, grasp the tool so that the slot is up and push the tool up through the top of the tag dispenser from the right-hand side (Figures 9 and 10). The Operator Tool Kit is attached to the inside of the right front door of the Conversion Station The slot in the tag-threading tool (A) should appear above the tag well (B). 10 11 With one hand, pinch the bend in the leader up against the tag-threading tool (A). With the other hand, slowly pull the tool down toward the take-up spool (B) (Figure 11). The leader should remain connected to the tool. 11 A B Figure 11: Slowly pull tool downward 12 Continue to pull DOWN on the tool until the leader pulls through the tag-feed area. The leader should hang down near the take-up spool (Figure 12). 12 Figure 12: Leader threaded correctly 6

11 13 Remove the take-up spool end-plate (Figure 13). 13 Figure 13: Removing the end-plate 14 Push DOWN on the tag dispenser switch (A) until the crimp slot (B) is at or near the top of the roller (Figure 14). 14 B A Figure 14: Guiding leader around spool 15 Rotate the take-up spool (clockwise) until it locks into position, guide the leader around the take-up spool, and re-install the end-plate (Figure 15). The leader should be clamped into the slot in the take-up spool. 15 Figure 15: Leader clamped in slot 16 Rotate the stop lever (counter-clockwise) on the supply roll shaft until the stop lever is in the DOWN position (Figure 16). 16 Figure 16: Rotating stop lever 7

12 17 Place the tag dispenser switch in the ON (up) position (Figure 17). 17 Figure 17: Setting switch to ON 18 The dispenser automatically initializes and the dispenser motor operates until a tag (A) is dispensed through the feeder opening (Figure 18). 18 A If a tag jams or is not in the correct position, see Troubleshooting on page 11. Note: If the leader is excessively long, the motor may stop automatically. To restart the motor, turn the tag dispenser switch to the OFF (middle) position and then ON again. Normal operation should resume when advancing the second tag. Figure 18: Tag in feeder opening 8

13 Replacing a roll of tags At the end of a roll, the tag dispenser motor will stop automatically after about ten seconds. 1 Make sure the tag dispenser switch (located to the right of the supply roll) is set to the OFF (middle) position. 2 Pull the take up reel end-plate straight out and remove. 3 Hold the back of the take-up spool and rotate the spool counterclockwise. 2 Removing take-up spool end-plate 4 Pull the spool and used roll straight out and remove. 4 Removing take-up spool and liner 5 Remove the liner from the take-up spool. 5 Removing liner from take-up spool 6 Re-install the take-up spool. 7 Load a roll of RFID Tags. 6 Re-installing take-up spool 9

14 Cleaning the Automatic Tag Dispenser Cleaning the tag dispenser opening Use a soft cloth to remove any dust from the tag dispenser opening. Cleaning the spring plate (tensioner/guide) Clean the spring plate approximately every 5,000 tags or as necessary. 1 Remove the spring plate. Hold the spring plate and remove the four (4) thumb screws that attach the spring plate to the frame. 2 Clean the spring plate with a soft cloth and a mild cleaning solution. The surface of the spring plate that contacts the tags may have a thin waxy buildup. Thumb Screws (4) Spring Plate 3 Replace the spring plate _001 10

15 Troubleshooting The tag dispenser switch controls the motor used to advance tags to the feeder opening on the top of the Conversion Station. The tag dispenser switch has three positions: ON (up) position OFF (middle) position JOG (down) position Tag Dispenser Switch Problem The tag dispenser motor stops before a tag advances into the correct position above the tag feeder opening, A tag jams below the surface of the tag feeder opening, Solution Turn the tag dispenser switch to the OFF (middle) position and then to the ON (up) position. A tag should advance through the tag feeder opening and into the correct position. 1 Go inside the Conversion Station cabinet and clear the jammed tag. 2 Turn the tag dispenser switch to the OFF (middle) position and then to the ON (up) position. 3 A tag should advance through the tag feeder opening and into the correct position. A tag appears in or slightly above the tag feeder opening but you cannot peel off the tag Turn the tag dispenser switch to the JOG (down) position as many times as necessary to advance or jog the tag into the correct position. 11
