Transportation 101 getting from point A to B What We ll Cover An introduction to: the transportation system jobs in transportation 1
What is Transportation? --Brainstorm-- Transportation is the system for moving people and goods 2
The Transportation System The transportation system is made up of: travelers and freight; the origins and destinations across all land uses; all types of vehicles; programs that provide transportation or seek to alter travel behavior; and the resources used for travel including physical infrastructure, control systems, terminals, communications systems, and energy. Planning and Funding $ Who plans and funds transportation in the U.S.? Federal government State government County/Regional governments Local governments Private sector (In 2006, government spent more than $199 billion on transportation!) 3
U.S. Department of Transportation The U.S. DOT is made up of 13 sub-agencies: Office of the Secretary of Transportation (OST) Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) $$$ Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) Federal Transit Administration (FTA) Maritime Administration (MARAD) National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Office of Inspector General (OIG) Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) Research and Innovative Technology Administration (RITA) Saint Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation (SLSDC) Surface Transportation Board (STB) Vehicles and their Routes Boats Trains, Subways Cars/trucks/vans,etc. Buses, 18-Wheelers Planes Bikes, pedestrians (*Liquids, gases) Water, Canals Rails Roads Bridges Airports Bike paths, sidewalks Pipelines 4
Water Huge container ships Ferries & cruise ships of all sizes Jobs on the Water Captain Deckhand Port/Marina worker Mechanic Captain Richard Phillips of Underhill, VT 5
Boating Jobs in VT Vermont has multiple ferry companies: Lake Champlain Transportation Ticonderoga Ferry Vermont has dozens of marinas: Apple Island Marina, Burlington Community Boathouse, Champlain Marina, Ladd s Landing Ltd., Newport Marina, North Hero Marina, Shelburne Shipyard, and many more! Rail in the U.S. Trains travel 599 million miles each year There are 125,000 rail transportation jobs Hauling freight by rail is more efficient than hauling it by truck Some estimate: 1 ton of freight can be moved 436 miles on 1 gallon of fuel! 6
VT Freight and Passenger Railroads Freight Passenger Trucking in the U.S. In 2005, there were over 8.4 million large trucks, & over 807,000 buses registered 7
Trucking Truckers can run cross-country, or work closer to home Air There are 486,000 Jobs in aviation in the U.S.! 8
16 Airports in VT Pilot Flight attendant Air traffic controller Ground crew Ticket sales, etc. Jobs in Aviation 9
Pipeline It may seem strange to think of a pipeline as transportation, but pipelines get the liquids and gases from Point A to Point B, and if not transported by pipeline, it would need to be hauled some other way. And finally Transportation jobs that the Transportation Systems Academy will help you prepare for: 10
Highway Departments/Road Crews Vermont Agency of Transportation Municipal Highway Departments/Road Crews Vermont Agency of Transportation The Operations Division has over 560 employees who: maintain Vermont s highways, railways, airports, and public transit systems manage the system in a cost-effective and environmentally-sensitive way 11

Jobs in Transportation Transportation-related jobs in U.S. (in thousands): That s just the beginning! There are even more kinds of transportation jobs out there 40-50% of transportation workers are expected to retire in the next 5-10 years Welcome to a career field that s full of opportunities! 13
