2 Release 7.4 This latest release (scheduled for November) adds optimization for emissions and crashes with delay and a new heat map report in Streets; improved CSV file interaction and multiple-period animation in Freeways; expanded procedures for freeways and ramps in the Highway Safety Software; and a new Service Volumes tool (see below). Streets The signal timing optimization tool within the Streets module adds safety (crash frequency) and environmental impacts (gas emissions) to operations (overall delay). The models build on the current genetic algorithm process to use intersection depth, land use type and mast arm information to compute optimum cycle, splits and offsets that minimize crashes, emissions and delay. The new heat-map report provides a color-coded table with intersections located along an urban street to illustrate travel speed and level of service by segment and time period. The table cells display travel speed by segment and time period and the background color for each cell is based on its corresponding segment level of service. The length of the table rows is proportional to segment lengths between the intersections. To make it easier to use in presentations, this table can be easily exported as an image file as well. Freeways The CSV data file interaction with Microsoft Excel consists of further improvements by including ramp and managed lane geometric data along with heavy vehicles and peak hour factor data for weaving movements. Freeway facility files containing multiple-period analyses can now be animated using CORSIM.
3 Highway Safety Software The HSM supplement procedures within Chapter 18 (Freeways) and Chapter 19 (Ramps) are implemented within the Highway Safety Software with HCS7 Release 7.4. Service Volumes The HCM service volume tables are automated in HCS7 Release 7.4 to provide hourly and daily service volume estimates for Basic Freeway Segments, Multilane Highways, Freeway Merge and Diverge Segments. Data required include number of lanes, free-flow speed, terrain, truck percentages, peak hour factor, K and D values to generate the service volume estimates for a target level of service.
4 VOLUME HCM 6th Edition Available 64 \\ OCTOBER 2017 The Highway Capacity Manual, Sixth Edition: A Guide for Multimodal Mobility Analysis (HCM) provides methods for quantifying highway capacity. In its current form, it serves as a fundamental reference on concepts, performance measures, and analysis techniques for evaluating the multimodal operation of streets, highways, freeways, and off-street pathways. The Sixth Edition incorporates the latest research on highway capacity, quality of service, active traffic and demand management, and travel time reliability and improves the HCM s chapter outlines. The objective is to help practitioners who are applying HCM methods understand the basic concepts, computational steps, and outputs. These changes are designed to keep the manual in step with its users needs and present times. You can order your copy from the Transportation Research Board (TRB) here: A MESSAGE FROM BILL SAMPSON As we wrap up the final features for the HCS7 implementation of the HCM6 procedures, we have been more than pleased with the response from our users as a seamless transition to an upgraded package offering many more options. The addition of the Highway Safety Software and its Supplement has also been well received as providing an intuitive automation of those procedures. We continue to provide timely and informed support of these tools and with answers to most questions just a quick or phone call away. Bill Sampson, Director
5 Highway Capacity Analysis Webinar Series Including detailed information on HCM 6th Edition and HCS7 This webinar series presents lectures, software demonstrations and application examples on the Highway Capacity Manual (HCM) procedures including updates in the 6th Edition. Step-by-step instructions of the HCM methodologies will be provided for each analytical chapter. The Highway Capacity Software (HCS) implements and automates the HCM procedures. Each lecture will be followed by working example problems and a software demonstration using the HCS7 prototype. A comprehensive workbook is provided to include all slides. Registration is provided in four sections (Streets, Unsignal, Freeways and Highways) with the Overview included with any registration and a discount for the entire series. The series is organized over four days as follows with all presented from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM ET. Detailed course descriptions and registration can be found at mctrans.ce.ufl.edu/training.
