1 Press Release Freight traffic increases by 13.4 percent bayernhafen Gruppe comes out of the crisis faster than expected Regensburg, 24 February 2011 The bayernhafen Gruppe is now reaping the rewards from its investment in commercial sites and infrastructure throughout the economic crisis. There was a notable increase in the throughput of goods in the 2010 financial year at its six sites at Aschaffenburg, Bamberg, Nuremberg, Roth, Regensburg and Passau. A total of around 29 million tonnes of freight were handled by ship, rail and truck. In addition, extensive long term real estate contracts for new sites and business expansions were signed. We ve come out of the crisis faster than we expected explained Joachim Zimmermann, managing director of the bayernhafen Gruppe, and there will continue to be a return on our investments during the upturn. With a 13.4% increase in throughput, the group is above the average for Germany. In comparison, according to preliminary data published by the Federal Office for Statistics, transport volume rose by 3.1% in Germany last year. The most significant growth was in rail freight; throughput for the whole group rose by 32.5% percent to 7.1 million tonnes, this increase was especially noteworthy in the intermodal sector. Container throughput reached 357,000 TEUs in % of this growth was concentrated at combined transport terminals in Regensburg and especially Nuremberg. There, the launch of a second module has doubled capacity and this together with the recovering economy saw figures increase. Joachim Zimmermann explained This means that our six sites now have a market share of about 15% of the total volume of rail freight throughput in Bavaria. Last year bayernhafen Gruppe s volume of investments stood at over 8 million euros. At the location in Nuremberg alone, 3.2 million euros were invested in rail infrastructure and the complete electrification of the CT terminal connection. Moreover, the terminal connection for the rolling road at Regensburg was electrified. This cost 1.5 million euros. More than 24,000 trucks were transported on the trans-alpine rolling road between Regensburg and Trento in Italy in 2010, 25% up on last year. Seite 1 von 12

2 Uneven growth in shipping freight throughput in the different regions The largest share of freight traffic was carried by road with a total of 18.1 million tonnes of goods transported. Shipping freight throughput fell slightly by 4.5% to 3.8 million tonnes in This represents a market share of over 40% in Bavaria. The regional development of shipping freight throughput in the bayernhafen Gruppe has been uneven. While the Danube ports have lost ground, the sites on the Main and the Main-Danube Canal have grown. One reason for the decline on the Danube lies in the somewhat slower economic recovery in South Eastern Europe and the still to be felt repercussions on iron and steel products, which have been hit hardest during the crisis. "I assume however, that the general upturn will strengthen in the current year and that shipping throughput will also see a more positive development," Mr. Zimmerman said. In view of the expected general increase in transport, Mr. Zimmermann, who also sits on the Board of the Federal Association of Public Inland Ports, expressed his concern over the plans of the Federal Ministry of Transport to divide waterways into core and side networks. This is not the way to achieve the objective of shifting freight to more environmentallyfriendly shipping. There was a strong demand for the handling of heavy goods in all bayernhafen Gruppe sites throughout Manufacturers of transformers and construction equipment use the efficient handling facilities for oversized and heavy goods. There is also a strong demand from the wind energy industry in Regensburg and Passau with wind turbines being shipped down the Danube to Bulgaria and Romania. An upward trend is also emerging for passenger ships. Last year 451 cruise liners called at the port of Bamberg. This year 500 ships have already been registered. In Regensburg, where cruise liner berthing facilities on the river are run in cooperation with local authorities, 700 ships are expected in the current year, up from 570 in Seite 2 von 12

3 Ports attract valuable investors Businesses in the recycling industry were able to expand their capacity at the sites at Regensburg and Nuremberg considerably last year. In Regensburg alone, RVR Rohstoffverwertung Regensburg GmbH, in which the Scholz Group has a stake, invested some ten million euros in the construction of a sorting and recycling centre for secondary raw materials. The site of a former shipyard has been revitalised, guaranteeing excellent road, rail and harbour connections. The tri-modal transport link was also the main reason for the construction of the new biomass power plant at Aschaffenburg. In May, a new power plant built by Bioenergie Aschaffenburg GmbH and costing about 16.2 million euros came into operation. Container Depot Nürnberg GmbH (CDN), a subsidiary of IGS Logistics Group Hamburg, has invested six million euros in order to strengthen their market position in Southern Germany. The new container depot at Nuremberg has a capacity of up to 7,500 TEU. HDE Logistik GmbH has built a new logistics centre at the Bamberg site at a cost of 3.5 million euros. This is to handle all shipping and storage activities for Wieland Electric GmbH. When completed, approximately 200 new jobs will be created. Since last autumn, the throughput of steel products for construction sites has been handled by ship at the Roth site. Van Merksteijn Steel Netherland B.V. has built a 1,000 m 2 warehouse for this purpose. The outlook for the current financial year for bayernhafen Gruppe s property and real estate services is also highly positive. DPD, the international parcel and express service provider has invested around 20 million euros in the construction of a new logistics facility in the bayernhafen site at Nuremberg. Building is planned to start in spring and operations should have started by the first half of The new parcel-sorting facility has a turnover capacity of 15,000 parcels i.e is over twice the capacity of the existing Nuremberg plant. BayWa AG commercial and services group is planning a model investment in Regensburg in 2011 through the construction of a collection silo for the expansion of the grain trade, at a cost of Seite 3 von 12

4 around 20 million euros, the significance of which could reach all the way to South Eastern Europe. Site architects create value-added potential The bayernhafen Gruppe plans to invest almost 10 million euros in Business operations will be enhanced through the expansion of shunting capacities. The greatest part of investment funds will go into the preparation of sites for development. Plot conversion is an important part of strategic area management. These areas are now being granted in leasehold so that in the future, sites can be managed as sustainable port developments. Here, the bayernhafen Gruppe, with its more than 800ha of port area and around 500 companies with approximately 12,000 employees, acts as a strictly neutral operator and service provider whose infrastructure is open to all users. Offering and maintaining port infrastructures no longer meets the requirements of modern logistics centres. Modern port operators must now act as site architects and develop winning strategies crosscutting through different sites and companies. "If we want to open up new potential here, we will only succeed if we do it together with the companies in the ports and in close coordination with our partners in local government," Mr. Zimmermann underlines. The bayernhafen Gruppe has adopted a strongly customer-oriented strategy. The group has taken on the role of the middleman in the development of logistics solutions and networks. In 2010 events in Aschaffenburg, Regensburg and Bologna brought together different stakeholders, including important shipping agents, politicians and logistics specialists, thus creating a highly constructive exchange of ideas. 8 2. Strategic area management guarantees a healthy mix of industries The bayernhafen Gruppe sees itself as a site architect, developing crosscutting business strategies, investing in highly flexible infrastructure projects and opening up new added-value potential in close cooperation with business settling in the port area, thus enhancing the function and performance of the ports as logistics centres and hubs for the global exchange of goods. The company now owns a total of more than 800 hectares of land at its six locations, where many important industrial concerns as well as large numbers of small and medium-sized businesses have relocated. Strategic area management ensures a healthy mix of industries ranging from transport, storage, logistics, service and production companies. bayernhafen Gruppe sites are among the major engines of economic growth in Bavaria.
