2 1. About In October 2012 the international ENplus training for auditors took place in Vienna. On behalf of the PellCert project and in collaboration with the European Pellet Council (EPC) the ofi Austrian Research Institute for Chemistry and Technology, in cooperation with the DBFZ (Germany) organized a 2-day workshop with theory and practical elements. This third training followed the structure established in the initial two trainings. The date was chosen to coincide with the European Pellet Forum in Berlin (as originally auditors from overseas were planning to attend and therefore could combine these two events on their trip to Europe) which is an important gathering point for the pellets industry. 2. Summary The contents of the training were specially developed for auditors of accredited inspection bodies which perform inspections in accordance with the Certification program ENplus. The participation of the auditor training is regulated by the requirements of the ENplus handbook ( and is mandatory for auditors. The 8 attendants of the training came from Germany, Slovakia, Greece and Belgium (see attached list). The entire event was held in English. The training started on the first day with a theoretical part including the European standards system, the ENplus certification system, the chemical and physical test methods, the documentation requirements for woodpellet producers and - traders, the quality parameters of wood pellets and their significance for the production. Later that day the practical part of the training took place at the laboratories of ofi. Under the instruction of woodpellets experts the participants could gain experience with testmethods like the determination of the moisture content, the determination of the bulk density, the mechanical durability, the fines and the ashcontent, relevant for the production of wood pellets. The individual results were statistically analyzed immediately and presented at the end of the day. On the second day of training, the participants were taken to a demonstration audit at RZ-Pellets (production and transport vehicle) followed by an independent audit at Waldviertelpellets which was conducted in two groups. The training was moderated by Martin English (Head of the bioenergy department - ofi and long-time experienced auditor of wood pellet productions). The instructors Magdalena Wojcik and Philipp Koskarti (both ofi) supported the training actively. 1

The participation in this training is considered as an adequate proof of qualification for persons intending to audit pellet plants (see requirements stated in the ENplus handbook). The training is organised in the context of the PellCert project and financially supported by the Intelligent Energy Europe Programme. The contents of the training are provided by ofi Technologie & Innovation GmbH and Holzforschung Austria, organisations with extensive experience in auditing pellet plants and standards related to pellet quality. The trainers are Martin Englisch, Phillipp Koskarti and Wilfried Pichler. The training will include an introduction to the relevant EN standards, the requirements of ENplus, practical training in determining physical parameters of Pellets and audits of two modern pellet production plants. Time & Location On Thursday, 11 October the training will take place in the premises and laboratories of ofi Technologie & Innovation GmbH (Arsenal, Objekt 213, Franz-Grill-Strasse 5). On 12 October two pellet production plants in the vicinity of Vienna will be visited and audited. The program ends at approx. 8 p.m. in Vienna. Costs The training is financially supported by the IEE program. The fair costs for participating in the training are 600. This fee includes training and documentation, lunch on both days and transport costs from Vienna to the pellet production plants and back. Participants have to arrange and cover the costs of travel to Vienna, hotel and dinner on the 11 th and 12 th. Recommended Hotel: Roomz Hotel Vienna, A contingent of rooms has been reserved for participants (you will receive a dedicated reservation form). Please let us know if you prefer to stay at a different hotel (nearby ETAP Hotel would be an option), the transfer to and from the ofi premises as well as the bus to the pellet plants will leave from the Roomz hotel. Language The training will be held in English.
