125th Damage Prevention and Freight Claim Annual Conference July 24 26, 2017 Savannah, Georgia HYATT REGENCY 2 West Bay Street, Savannah, GA 31401
Bridging to the Future July 25, 2017 Jim Cappy System Manager Prevention and Field Services
Welcome to Savannah
Early Savannah History General James Oglethorpe founded Savannah on February 12, 1733 Port of export for rice and deer hides to Europe Established itself as a significant commercial port on the south Atlantic coast In the early 1800 s, railroads supported the port to become an important part of Savannah s history
The Beginning of the Railroad Industry in Savannah In 1870, there were 3 principle railroads serving Savannah: The Central of Georgia The Savannah and Charleston The Savannah and Gulf
From Small Regionals to Class 1 Many small railroads began to bridge together becoming state and regional railroads Through the years, several of these regional railroads merged together to become Southern Railway In 1982, Southern Railway bridged together with the Norfolk and Western Railway to become Norfolk Southern Corporation
Norfolk Southern
Growth of the Industry While the growth of the Norfolk Southern Corporation was underway, other railroads were creating their own bridges Regional lines all over the United States and Canada were combining to create Class 1 railroads, running in the United States, Canada and Mexico
Class 1 Railroads
Association Beginnings While all the class 1 railroads were becoming what they are today, 125 years ago the American Railway Association (ARA) began an annual business meeting The early ARA was a trade association which began in 1892 In 1934, the ARA expanded to include other railway industry trade groups becoming the Association of American Railroads (AAR)
AAR - The Early Years AAR was created October 12, 1934 by the merger of five industry-related groups: The American Railway Association The Association of Railway Executives The Bureau of Railroad Economics The Railway Accounting Officers Association The Railway Treasury Officers Association
Today We Celebrate the 125th AAR Annual Session The early Damage Prevention sessions involved meetings to discuss Freight Claims and Damage Prevention issues Under the Damage Prevention and Freight Claim Rule book, it was established there will be one annual business session The session will discuss changes, additions and discussions regarding the rules Over the last several years, the session has also begun to focus on a path to educate, discuss and expand the knowledge of the industry That path led us to today, where we are looking to begin Bridging to the Future
Where We Have Been 2011 New Orleans New People, New Ideas, Old World Charm 2012 Kansas City - Back to Basics Prevention and Claims San Antonio - Beyond the Basics Understanding the WHY 2014 Orlando - Progress through Partnerships 2015 Denver - Service Excellence The Mile High Goal 2016 Montreal - Leading through Transitions From What to Why to How Where do we go now???
Bridging to the Future
From the Past to the Future At last year s session, we discussed: How packaging has changed Successes of partnering with shippers by working together with package designers Investigating both blocking and bracing as well as packaging
Recognized Challenges
Topics to Help Us Cross the 2017 Bridge Boxcar load securement fitting all shapes in square boxes Future of packaging Open top opportunities/design product for rail travel Ride quality AAR and TAG updates
What Does the Future Hold? Begin the journey.. Cross the bridge, there are no tolls Take the opportunity to learn new things Open your mind to new and innovative ideas Share your experiences and knowledge to help grow the industry Interact with your colleagues and acquaintances in the industry and make new friends
While in Savannah, Join Us.. Take time to experience the history and charm of Savannah Take part in the culinary experiences in Savannah Walk the parks and trails throughout the city Rekindle old friendships and meet new friends
