1 Region of Waterloo Job Description Title: Supervisor, Fleet (Transit) Job Code: R00874 Department/Division: Transportation & Environmental Services/Transit Services Union: anagement/anagement Support Reports to: anager, Transit aintenance New: February 26, 2001 General Purpose: Supervises daily operations related to the efficient delivery of in-house maintenance and repairs to transit fleet. Provides advice to managers regarding repairs, modifications, and maintenance issues. Duties/Responsibilities: Supervises fleet maintenance staff, including Truck & Coach Technicians, students, and stockroom staff. Administers contracts with contractors performing vehicle repairs on premises. onitors work schedules to meet deadlines per work orders, maintenance schedules, and special events. Ensures work is completed in a timely manner and per established practices and procedures. Initiates work orders through the Fleet anagement system for preventive, non-scheduled, and accident-related maintenance and repairs. Assesses vehicles and equipment requiring emergency repair and coordinates with staff to determine problems and resolutions. Initiates work orders and schedules vehicle safety inspections per legislation. Prepares repair appraisals and estimates for insurance claims, and submits for review and forwarding to the Risk anager for processing. Liaises with managers, bus operators, and emergency service providers regarding transit assistance during emergencies. Completes purchase requisitions, and prioritizes, schedules, authorizes repairs, with signing authority up to $20,000. Ensures parts are received with minimum delay and follows up as needed. Ensures tools and shop equipment are maintained in good working condition. Ensures shop floor is maintained in a clean, orderly state; equipment and small tools are stored securely when not in use; and measures are in place to prevent abuse, theft, and misplacing. Gives/receives advice and provides primary backup/emergency information daily to Transit Supervisors. Discusses parts supply with stockroom staff, discusses equipment and emergency repairs with other staff. R00874 DCS #64489

2 -2- Deals with manufacturers regarding repair and warranty issues, and with suppliers on equipment operation and repairs. Exchanges maintenance information with other transit organizations and government agencies. Responds to requests from Police and Fire during emergencies when transit services are requested. Performs related duties as required. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Knowledge of fleet maintenance, normally acquired through a Community College Diploma in Automotive Technology or equivalent education, plus progressively responsible experience in mechanical equipment repair and supervision. ust possess a T310 Truck and Coach Certificate. Knowledge of and ability to comply with policies, procedures, related legislation (e.g., health and safety, Highway Traffic Act), general repair standards, and collective agreements. Ability to independently prioritize, assign, and schedule work and inspections, ensuring safe operating conditions. Human relations and organizational skills to organize and coordinate work of self and others; instruct and train staff in specific work methods and procedures; communicate recommendations to management and other staff; assist other staff and exchange detailed information; and participate as an effective team member. Ability to read and apply information from manufacturer and Regional policy and procedure manuals for performing and scheduling repairs and ensuring safety measures. Ability to write reports, equipment service standards, requisition forms, and accident estimates. Computer skills with ability to use software such as icrosoft ffice and the Fleet anagement system. Ability to properly use all equipment related to job duties. ust have a valid Class D diver's license with Z air-brake endorsement to operate Regional vehicles. Ability to travel within Waterloo Region. Ability to participate in an official standby/on-call rotation to respond to legislated or time sensitive demands beyond regularly scheduled work hours. Ability to support and project the Region s values. Working Conditions: Works in a standard office 50% of the time. Travels and may be required to transfer temporarily to the South Depot. Uses a computer, vehicle testing equipment, and reads technical manuals approximately 30% of the time. ccasionally lifts objects weighing up to 80 lbs, using a lifting device or with assistance.
