2 Recently, growth in e-commerce has gained significant momentum. The courier, express, and parcel service providers (CEP) in Germany reached a new record in 2016 as shown by the current CEP study sponsored by the German Federal Association of Parcel and Express Logistics (BIEK). For the first time ever, more than 3 billion shipments were transported in one year. The shipment volume rose by 7.2% to 3.16 billion shipments. And number of B2C deliveries rose by 13.2%. This equals more than 10 million shipments each day a feat that also illustrates just how indispensable CEP services are in global e-commerce. It s no wonder that processes in depots and distribution centers must run as efficiently and economically as possible. First, all incoming packages are unloaded and weighed on 16 telescope conveyor belts. Next, they are transported to the Auto-ID system. Each system has a tunnel design and contains five cameras. In addition to reading the barcode, the system is fully automated to capture the weight, length, width, and height of each package. Shipment information that is not completely read is added manually at four videocoding stations. All data is transferred to Braspress in real time.
