3 Multimodal Accessibility

4 Accessibility Challenges Larger international ports, multimodal accessibility measured by rail, road and air is around or below European average values. Metropolitan areas have above average accessibility values Large parts of the Atlantic Area and in particular remote regions have considerably less favourable accessibility values. Possibilities for one-day business trips within the European urban network are limited to urban centres but are often limited even in urban areas

5 Accessibility Challenges Important North-South gap: most regions of the Iberian Peninsula s west coast are under 50% of the EU average in terms of accessibility The peripheral feature of the Atlantic Area in the EU calls for: - Enhancing of its maritime gateway - Balancing the economic divide and lack of accessibility/ interconnections between coastal and inland areas

6 Improving Accessibility and Internal Links in the Atlantic Area The identified needs: Lack of transnational services Lack of interoperability between transport modes Lack of continuity and interconnections between networks A potential to increase short sea shipping as a response to intensive road traffic and congestion problems

7 Improving Accessibility and Internal Links in the Atlantic Area The programme s response focused on: Internal and external accessibility of the area Promotion of Interoperability and continuity of existing transport networks Sea/road/rail/air intermodality Promotion of short sea shipping and port cooperation

8 Improving Accessibility and Internal Links in the Atlantic Area Contribution sought by Transnational cooperation: Partnerships to test means to improve multi-modal logisitcs chains (smart technologies, simplified administration) Feasibility and cost-benefit analyses Testing of responses to inter-operability problems Designing strategies and creating tools to dessiminate information on transport services to optimise Atlantic area passenger trips

9 Atlantic Area Transport Projects BATTERIE - Looks at intermodal and inter-operable public transport and the use of alternative fuel sources CFA EFFIPLAT - Looks at the Atlantic rail freight transport and the intermodal link with ports and logistical platforms DURATINET - Looks at the durability, safety and sustainaibility of of transport infrastructures REPUTE Looks at the use of renewable energy in public transport to support inter-opearability and intermodality and continuity of existing transport networks

11 Atlantic Area Transport Projects Results: Contribution to setting up smart ticketing and smart card in several regions and cities Smart technologies and ticketing for passenger information and travel Contribution to strengthening local and regional mobility plans Fostering the switch to clean fuel use for public transport

12 Atlantic Area Transport Projects Results: Action plans for more intermodality and interoperability at local and regional level Testing of new regional and operators sales systems Generation of a common approach to smart ticketing with a common brand between a wide number of regional transport actors
