Agenda o o o The FI-PPP Programme Context Optimizing Urban Moves & Mobility Instant Mobility Scenarios o Dynamic multi-modal journey o Smart city logistics operations o Transport Infrastructure as a Service
Project Motivation and Objectives Main motivation Find / validate new ways to have more effectivepeople and goods urban transportation and promote them The conviction that Future Internet technologies (in our case always geo-localized, always connected, always personal) can fuel this Objectives Demonstrate the capabilities to dynamically optimize journeys and means of transportation for people & goods whatever their number Show how easy and natural this will be in the (near) future Optimize private car usage Demonstrate the power of complete information paradigm applied to urban transportation and the benefit for cities and citizens
A mix of Macro and Micro views In transportation, optimizing moves has many meanings : For local authorities : a statistical view Satisfying citizens expectations on the global scale having more people transported for the same cost Polluting less by lowering the amount of traffic jams, For travellers & drivers : an individual concern Moving faster, in a more comfortable way, cheaper For Public Transport Operators : looking for better operations Adjusting demand and offer, while ensuring increasing safety andsecurity needs Adapting more dynamically to events and expectations, For professional drivers and Car fleets members : resources efficiency Better access and use of urban space and resources Global optimisation requires to simultaneously address these meanings both in their micro and macro dimensions
Betting on Complete Information What kind of travel optimisation would be possible if a system were knowing continuously and in real time? The location and destination of each traveler Including their requirements and preferences (traveling with a pet, blind people ) The location and status of each possible means of transports Each bus, tram, taxi, private car, bicycle, The Instant Mobility project assume that: This information may be made available in a secure & privacy safe way Such Complete Information will enable much greater optimization on urban mobility Some leader services will start the creation of the overall system (collecting & publishing this information) Instant Mobility goal is to define such a system and prove its feasibility
Multi-modal public-private real time travel optimization 17:11 I want to go now to : 12, Av. Augustin Fresnel in Palaiseau Proposal to go to: 17:12 1, Av. Augustin Fresnel in Palaiseau You are currently located : 160 Bd. De Valmy in Colombes A.Take Bus 126 in 4mn for 2 stops (details) B.Take shared car xwz4 at bus stop in 7 mn (details) C.Shared car will drop you at Massy-Palaiseau station in about 40 mn D.Take Bus from Massy-Palaiseau station to A. Fresnel at 18:05. E.Arrival around 18:07 You are going to: 17:55 1, Av. Augustin Fresnel in Palaiseau Travel solution automatic update : You are now reaching : carrefour d Orsay, still on your way to Massy Palaiseau station You have travelled more slowly than forecasted and its too late to make the 18:05 connection. A new proposal has been computed : Change for a new shared car going to A. Fresnel at next crossroads (click to accept) Arrival expected around 18:15

Scenarios Overview
Description of the identified Use Scenarios 1 -Dynamic multi-modal journey 2 -Smart city logistics operations 3 -Transport Infrastructure as a Service All using the same common mobility platform
Description of the Use Scenarios 1 Dynamic multi-modal journey Travel Companion This scenario intends to provide travellers, surface vehicle drivers and transports operators with the benefits of dynamic planning and follow-up of multimodal journeys in urban and peri-urban areas To travellers: helping them to plan and adjust in real time a multimodal journey from door to door Application-service 1.1 : Dynamic multi-modal journey To vehicle drivers, allowing them to easily book and execute ride sharing on their way to their own destination Application-service 1.2 : Dynamic ride sharing To transport operators: providing them with the complete information to initiate demand driven transportation operations Application-service 1.3 : Optimized public transport usage
Traveler Life Cycle Itinerary Planning Real-time Monitoring
Extended Transport Modalities Public Transport Private Transport Individual Collective Transport Infrastructures + P
Description of the Use Scenarios 2 Smart city logistics operations This scenario intends to provide benefits to transport operators, consignees and other actors and stakeholders involved in, affected by or dependent on the transportation of goods in urban environments. It aims to enhance urban transport operations withrespect to efficiency, safety and environmental impact but also provide better service to the end-user of the distribution system. Centralized/decentralized Load sharing and optimizing Dynamic allocation of transport requests to the most suitable available transport resource and en route reloading goods based on peer to peer vehicle dialog Dynamic time/place drop point A service for providing enhanced value to the consignee (i.e. the receiver of the delivery) and a way to make transport operations more efficient (it may e.g. be possible to drop something off at the consignees workplace or evening rail station instead of at home if it better fits the operators itineraries) Itinerary booking and real time optimized route navigation (for trucks) To optimize the movements of the vehicles, avoiding them to be blocked in traffic jams and taking, when possible, the shortest routes Eco-optimised driving, vehicle and driveline control By comparing the driver s performance in real-time to the performance of others on the same road sections and gathering information from the infrastructure (e.g. traffic lights) and other vehicles improving the driver in-vehicle coaching and give haptic throttle pedal feedback.
Description of the Use Scenarios 3 Transport Infrastructure as a Service Study the conditions needed for dynamic traffic management & integrated urban space, on how to use Future Internet technologies such as cloud data storage, Cloud computing virtualization or services-in-the-cloud in dynamic traffic management Real time traffic & route info The vehicle acts as a probe for traffic estimation sending data to a traffic service on the Internet At the same time, the drivers can receive RT-updated personalized traffic information Floating passenger data collection Provide accurate predictions on passenger density and position measurements over the transport network Data will also be used by the Transport Operators and the Organizing Authorities to optimize PT services Virtualized intersection intelligence This Service concentrates in the adaptive and distributed traffic control technique as the solution to improve traffic control systems in case of heavy and unpredictable traffic conditions. This service consists of having traffic control operations hosted in the cloud, and at the same time using the adaptive and distributed technique, leaving local virtual systems the task of providing safety controls and communications. Cooperative traffic signal control To collect, aggregate and validate data from different and innovative sources, in order to give traffic information and forecasts in non-monitored zone Area-wide optimization strategies Regulating speed to minimize fuel consumption, CO2 emission and improve traffic fluency
Process for validating the Use Scenarios Participating Cities and professional stakeholders are advisors Roma, Istanbul, Toledo, Nice, Trondheim Business models identification are a dedicated topic in project Cities are pushing end users polls for acceptability Limited experimental real case prototypes are currently defined and will be shown at ICT World in Vienna (october2012) : Capability to handle large passengers number in RT (200 K simulation demo based on real algorithm) Driver/traveller mockupdialog for users feedback Two other prototypes in 2013 : Fare data collection Smart traffic management
