Infrastructure Chalmers Simulator Center: Innovative ship simulator center Approved as a Chalmers Research Infrastructure Cooperation with Swedish Maritime Administration Chalmers manages the European Maritime Simulator Network (EMSN) 10/14/2015 Chalmers Department of Shipping and Maritime Technology 3

The IGF Code The purpose of this Code is to provide an international standard for ships using low-flashpoint fuel, other than ships covered by the IGC Code. The first rule for construction in 1983 Interim guidelines 10/14/2015 Chalmers Department of Shipping and Maritime Technology 4

LNG update: IGF Code adopted by IMO JUNE 18, 2015 IMO s Maritime Safety Committee adopted the new mandatory code for ships fueled by gases or other lowflashpoint fuels. MSC adopted the International Code of Safety for Ships using Gases or other Low-flashpoint Fuels (IGF Code), along with amendments to make the Code mandatory under the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS). The code will enter into force on January 1, /14/2015 Chalmers Department of Shipping and Maritime Technology 5

Why a new code? Why the IGF code? New type of fuel Other regulations and demands for a safe shipping Infrastructure Less of pollution Cryogenic

What is the IGF- code about? Purpose: to provide an international standard for ships using low-flashpoint fuel, other than vessels covered by the IGC Code. Aim: to minimize the risk to the ship, its crew and the environment, having regard to the nature of the fuels involved Contains: mandatory provisions for the arrangement, installation, control and monitoring of machinery, equipment and systems using low-flashpoint fuels, focusing initially on LNG. 10/14/2015 Chalmers Department of Shipping and Maritime Technology 7

Regulations IMO Interime guidelines MSC 285(86) Intertime guidance on traning for seafares (Nov 2014) Admendments to STCW Chapter V IGF Code Admendment to SOLAS 10/14/2015 Chalmers Department of Shipping and Maritime Technology 8

Why do we need a simulator for bunkring? New demands Referral university to Swedish Transport Agency Its a supplement to chapter V in STCW Code. Train our students for the future Courses for the shipping industry Half of all new built in Sweden is LNG vessels or prepared for LNG. (total in stock 43 vessel) 10/14/2015 Chalmers Department of Shipping and Maritime Technology 9

Development of LNG fuelled ships 10/14/2015 Chalmers Department of Shipping and Maritime Technology 10

Segment of LNG vessel 10/14/2015 Chalmers Department of Shipping and Maritime Technology 11

STCW and supplement levels Basic training for seafarers responsible for designated safety duties associated with the care, use or in emergency response to the fuel Advanced training for masters, engineer officers and all other personnel with immediate responsibility for the care and the use of fuels and fuel systems Familiarization for all seafarers ship and equipment specific familiarization as specified in reg I/ /14/2015 Chalmers Department of Shipping and Maritime Technology 12

Have a look at supplement to STCW Convention Basic training Certificate in basic training (Table A-V/3-1) Advanced training Certificate in advanced traning (Table A-V/3-2), AND Completed at least one month of approved seagoing service including a minimum of three bunkering operations onboard ships subject to the IGF Code (of which two can be replaced by approved simulator training) 10/14/2015 Chalmers Department of Shipping and Maritime Technology 13

The Maritime Educations Developed a electable course (Given in English) Ships operation under the IGF code The course will fulfill the requirement's for the IGF Code. Every candidate for a certificate in advanced training for service on ships subject to the IGF Code shall,.1 completed approved advanced training for service on ships subject to the IGF Code and meet the standard of competence as specified in section A-V/3, paragraph 2 of the STCW Code; and.2 completed at least one month of approved seagoing service that includes a minimum of three bunkering operations on board ships subject to the IGF Code. Two of the three bunkering operations may be replaced by approved simulator training on bunkering operations as part of the training in paragraph 8.1 above. 10/14/2015 Chalmers Department of Shipping and Maritime Technology 14

Why train LNG handling in a simulator? New type of fuel New technology New rules Prevent accidents Knowledge about risks Cryogenic 10/14/2015 Chalmers Department of Shipping and Maritime Technology 15

The LNG Bunkering simulator DEDF42-CF Kongsberg A joint project with Linnaeus University, Chalmers University of Technology and Kongsberg digital. First discussion in may 2016 delivery in June 2017 The base for the bunkering simulator is Viking Grace passenger ferry

Main features of the simulator 10/14/2015 Chalmers Department of Shipping and Maritime Technology 17

What will the simulator support? Understand the complex thermodynamics of LNG Handle different qualities of LNG Elaborate with the complex properties Understand how to handle risks Be more confident with your onboard duties Prepare our student's for the future 10/14/2015 Chalmers Department of Shipping and Maritime Technology 18
