Single-Axis Systems Portal Axes Portal axes consist of a stationary axis body with a guide system and a moving carriage. These modules can handle small to medium loads and moments. In combination with a roller guide, the toothed belt drive enables high path and positioning accuracy. If equipped with a recirculating ball bearing guide, the units can handle greater loads and moments. The axis body consists of an aluminium profile with superior torsional and flexural strength. T-grooves on three sides allow for easy mounting and installation. Berger Lahr offers portal axes with an additional auxiliary or shaft axis for applications that cannot be realised with a single portal axis. The P/H combination consists of a portal axis with an auxiliary axis which does not have a drive. The P/S combination consists of two portal axes with a common drive shaft. The combinations are used for greater loads or moments and/or large-surface load suspension as well as great positioning distances without additional support. Features Particularly high speeds with roller guides High loads with recirculating ball bearing guides Compact design High flexibility due to variable number and length of carriages as well as the possibility to mount the motor on the left or right side of the axis Corrosion-resistant versions for special environments Supply and positioning of different parts and pieces Fast motion with suction and gripper tools Moving or positioning of sensors, actuators, buttons, measuring units, etc. Flexible feed motion to cut semifinished products to length Portal axis as P/S combination Portal axis Portal axis as P/H combination Portal axis LM-P Portal axis LM-P/H Portal axis LM-P/S Load: up to 90 kg up to 130 kg up to 150 kg Stroke: up to 5500 mm up to 5500 mm up to 5500 mm Speed: up to 5 m/s up to 5 m/s up to 5 m/s Guide system*: R/B R/B R/B Profile: up to 120 x 120 mm up to 120 x 120 mm up to 120 x 120 mm Driving element: toothed belt toothed belt toothed belt * R = roller guide, B = recirculating ball bearing guide 3

Single-Axis Systems Cantilever Axes Cantilever axes have a stationary driving unit and a moving axis body. This way, they can dynamically move into the working area. Cantilever axes in profile design are used with roller guides for high speeds and with recirculating ball bearing guides for greater loads and strokes. The motor torque is transmitted by means of a toothed belt or, in the case of greater loads, with a toothed rack. A mechanical interface is available at the profile end for the adaptation of suction, gripper or assembly tools. Cantilever axes in round bar design are used for small to medium loads and strokes. Due to their design, they are very compact and dynamic. Toothed belts or toothed racks are used for the power transmission. The end plates at the guide bars are prepared for suction or gripper tools. Telescopic axes are extreme space-saving cantilever axes. The motor unit is stationary, the axis body and the carriage move. From the stationary motor, the carriage of the telescope axis can move with the same stroke both in positive as well as in negative direction. The driving torque is transmitted by means of a toothed belt. Telescope axes are available with roller guides for high speeds and with recirculating ball bearing guides for greater loads. Dynamic loading of machines with short cycle times Fast, linear gripper movements for parts handling Loading and unloading in work areas with limited space Cantilever axis, round bar design Cantilever axis, profile design Telescope axis Cantilever axis LM-A Telescope axis T Design: profile round bar profile Load: up to 30 kg up to 18 kg up to 35 kg Stroke: up to 1200 mm up to 500 mm up to 2400 mm Speed: up to 5 m/s up to 5 m/s up to 5 m/s Guide system*: R/B B R/B Profile/bars: up to 120 x 120 mm up to 25 mm 120 x 155 mm Driving element**: TB/TR TB/TR TB * R = roller guide, B = recirculating ball bearing guide ** TB = toothed belt, TR = toothed rack 4

Single-Axis Systems Linear Tables Linear Tables can handle high loads and moments. The axis body consists of an aluminium profile with superior torsional and flexural strength. The integrated ball screw allows for high-precision feed movements with high feed forces. The integrated guide system consists of two guide rails. Each guide rail has two recirculating ball bearing guides with integrated ball chain. Features Superior system rigidity due to the special aluminium profile Compact dimensions Designed for easy maintenance with an integrated central lubrication unit Easy integration due to T grooves in the axis profile and on the carriage High positioning accuracy and repeatability due to pre-loaded recirculating ball bearing guides and ball screw Motor mounting, straight or with a backlashfree belt transmission Linear Tables are designed for automation technology applications: High-precision feed movements, backlash-free, e.g. for cutting, labelling or applying glue or sealing agents Pick and place positioning of heavy parts High feed forces, required for joining or clamping processes Linear Tables Linear Tables LT Integrated ball screw drive Stroke: Speed: Guide system: Profile: Driving element: up to 1500 mm up to 1 m/s recirculating ball bearing guide up to 200 x 80 mm ball screw 5

Multi-Axis Systems Linear Positioners/Linear Robots Multi-axis systems are standardised combinations of single axes for diverse motion sequences. Dual-axis systems enable motion in a single plane, triple-axis systems allow for three-dimensional motion. Linear Positioner LP The linear positioner is used above or below the work area as a X/Z axis. It is particularly suitable for moving loads with long X and short Z strokes. Dynamic handling of parts from or to the conveyor belt Loading and unloading of containers Sorting and arranging of parts from containers or into containers Linear Robot LR The linear robot is mounted next to the work area and moves in parallel or over the work area. It is available as a dual axis X/Y combination or as a triple axis X/ Y/ Z combination. 7 Multi-Axis Systems Portal Robots/Wall-Mounted Portal Robots Portal Robot PR Portal robots are used for applications above the work area, either as X/Y or as X/Y/Z motion units, depending on your requirements. An additional rotational axis can be mounted to the Z axis, if required. Wall-Mounted Portal Robot WR Wall-mounted portal robots are used for applications next to the work area, either as X/Y or as X/Y/Z motion units, depending on your motion requirements. Two-dimensional movement of loads over great distances Aligning of parts in chaotic production processes inspection or measuring of parts or bodies with large surfaces Portal robot Wall-mounted portal robot Portal robot PR Wall-mounted portal robot WR Axes: two axes three axes two axes three axes Load: up to 80 kg up to 30 kg up to 40 kg up to 15 kg X stroke: up to 5500 mm up to 5500 mm up to 4500 mm up to 4500 mm Y stroke: up to 2500 mm up to 2000 mm - up to 700 mm Z stroke: - up to 1200 mm up to 2000 mm up to 2000 mm 7

Multi-Axis Systems Low-Mass Systems Low-mass systems have stationary motors. They are designed for highly dynamic movements. Linear Positioner LP-A The linear positioner is mounted at a single point next to or above the work area. It is designed for fast movements with medium strokes in the X/Z plane. Linear Positioner LP-P The linear positioner LP-P is designed like a portal axis with an additional Z axis. It is mounted at two points above the work area. Therefore, it can dynamically move greater loads over greater distances. Rotational Stroke Module HD The rotational stroke module is a dual-axis module that combines linear and rotational motion. These independent, highly dynamic movements make the module a versatile solution in a great variety of applications. The drive shaft is hollow which enables a central energy supply for suction or gripper tools. Fast and high-precision positioning of light-weight parts Highly dynamic commissioning of light-weight parts from or to the conveyor belt Circumferential marking of cylindrical parts Linear positioner LP-P Linear positioner LP-A Rotational Stroke Module HD Linear positioner LP-A Linear positioner LP-P Rotational Stroke Module HD Load: up to 2 kg up to 5 kg up to 3 kg X stroke: up to 300 mm up to 700 mm - Z stroke: up to 150 mm up to 300 mm up to 350 mm Speed: up to 5 m/s up to 5 m/s - Rotation angle: - - infinite 8

Application Examples Pick and Place This application removes parts for cell phones from the conveyor belt and places them according to selectable patterns. A triple-axis portal robot with a parallel gripper system picks ceramic parts and places them onto plates which are moved to the oven. Filling on the Fly This application fills liquids (brake fluid, coolant and windscreen washer fluid) into cars. First, the speed of the triple-axis robot is synchronised with the speed of the car on the line. Then, a telescope axis moves into the engine compartment and fills the various tanks. Assembly This application assembles controls from three elements and stacks them. An empty container is positioned in the work area. A portal axis with multiple grippers gets the base parts from the conveyor belt and places them into the container until it is full. Then, the next group of parts is removed from the belt and assembled onto the base parts. Finally, the system places the covers onto the controls. The filled container with the assembled controls is then transported and stacked by a portal axis system. Autostacking This application allows for flexible, product-specific commissioning of various cosmetics such as vanity cases or lipsticks. The filled blisters are stacked and transported to the unloading station. Several pieces are removed from the blisters with a special gripper and placed into a carrier according to a flexible grid that is determined by the product variant. 9
