2 DI S C OV ER Y Australia: Acacia Ridge Rail Assessment: Acacia Ridge Rail Facility, in Queensland, Australia is the primary intermodal (i.e., shipping container) rail facility serving the city and port of Brisbane Australia s third largest city and the primary cargo port for northeastern and eastern Australia. The facility also serves a critical role in interstate rail freight transportation as a hub for break-of-gauge activity (transshipping freight between rail cars using different gauges of track). During 2013 the port of Brisbane moved 1,031,436 TEU (Twenty-Foot Equivalent Unit, shipping containers). Of this total 56,473 TEUs (5%) were moved through the Acacia Ridge Rail facility. Satellite imagery of the Acacia Ridge Rail Facility acquired on July 17, 2014 shows the presence of, 409 intermodal cars (134 loaded and 275 empty), 19 diesel-electric engines, 6 bulkhead flat cars (empty), 7 tanker cars and 1 gondola (empty). Compared with imagery from June 29, 2014, rail, truck and loading/unloading/break-ofgauge activities at the facility are nominal. No potential interruptions of rail service, rail maintenance, construction or demolition activity (facilities or rail), or shortage of shipping containers are visible.
