1 Aggregates 3 Industrial weighing and measurement News Truck Scales Built to Survive Harsh Environments The sand and dust at aggregates facilities can be hard on weighing equipment. METTLER TOLEDO truck scales are built to survive constant exposure to the harsh environments created by sand, dust, moisture, and extreme temperatures. The densely populated northeastern United States provides enormous opportunities for the sale of aggregates to the commercial, industrial, construction, and restoration markets. Holliston Sand Company is the leading producer of high-quality sands in New England. It has supplied golf and synthetic turf fields, filtration facilities, and others with high-quality sand and natural stone products since 1970 from its Slatersville, Rhode Island, location. Holliston Sand prides itself on its commitment to providing superior-quality products and services. The company s filtration sands are nature s own filter media and must be carefully washed, sized, and graded to meet stringent industry specifications. These filter-media products are certified under NSF-61 by the National Sanitation Foundation and are suitable for municipal wastewater treatment, drinking water systems, pool filter systems, commercial and residential well drilling, and environmental monitoring wells. Holliston Sand also has a long history of producing sports turf products, including greens construction sands

2 Vehicle Weighing and maintenance sands. The sand is carefully screened, washed, dried, and blended to produce drainage layers, root zones, top dressings, divot mixes, and bunker sands. All products are available in bulk and packaged. In 2006 Holliston Sand s truck scale was at the end of its usable life and needed to be replaced. The first choice for a supplier was METTLER TOLEDO, which had been providing service to the company for years. According to Carmine Iacuone, the facility s general manager, the service relationship, competitive price, and software support won METTLER TOLEDO the sale. Holliston Sand purchased a 70-foot, steel-deck truck scale, along with a JAGXTREME terminal and an Over- Drive software package for managing data from weighing transactions. Initially, the new scale was set up for temporary use and then installed permanently when the foundation was ready. Sand can cause problems by collecting under a scale and around its load cells. For the permanent installation, risers were used to position the scale and its load cells above the ground. That provides easy access for clearing the area under the scale and preventing frozen material from building up during the winter. The scale is cleaned regularly and maintained properly to ensure a long life. According to Iacuone, We re very pleased with the equipment. The scale is so accurate, local municipalities have asked to use it to certify their scales. We ve also experienced no lightning problems. Holliston Sand is planning to add another scale in its dryer storage and dispensing area. The company s full-service packaging center, which is equipped with blending and filling stations, uses METTLER TOLEDO scales to ensure consistency in its palletized products. Overall product quality is verified by on-site testing laboratories, which use laboratory balances from METTLER TOLEDO. Risers position load cells several inches above the ground, and debris shields keep sand from building up around load pins. 3 Convert a Tank or Hopper for Heavy-Capacity Weighing Gagemount weigh modules are built to handle the heavy loads that are common in the aggregates industry. With a robust design and built-in safety features, they stand up to the most demanding environments. Gagemount weigh modules enable you to convert a large tank or hopper into a scale. Their rugged construction and heavy-capacity load cells make them ideal for aggregates applications. With individual load cell capacities up to 300t (661,000 lb), a Gagemount weigh module system can provide reliable weighing for the largest tanks and hoppers. These versatile weigh modules can be adapted to tanks used for loading, mixing, batching, and inventory management. Reliable Load Cells Each Gagemount weigh module is equipped with a model 0782 load cell, which combines accuracy with a robust design. To ensure accurate and repeatable weighing, the integral rocker column automatically aligns the load cell in the ideal weighing position, even when strong side loads are applied. The load cell s electronic components are housed in a hermetically sealed, stainless steel canister that protects them from the effects of dust, moisture, and other environmental forces. Designed for Safety Gagemount weigh modules have extra safety features to help resist wind and seismic forces in outdoor applications. All capacities up to 100t (220,000 lb) have built-in check rods to stabilize the tank, while allowing for thermal expansion and contraction. An optional uplift kit can be installed to provide added protection against tipping. In case an extreme overload causes a catastrophic load cell failure, built-in safety blocks support the weight of the scale to prevent damage or injury. Weigh modules with capacities of 200t (441,000 lb) or greater require external checking systems. A ground strap protects the load cell from electrical damage. Aggregates applications require rugged, heavy-capacity weigh modules. Check Rod Ground Strap Gagemount Weigh Modules Safety Support Block Gagemount weigh modules have safety features built into 20t to 100t capacities. Carbon steel or stainless steel mounting hardware. Stainless steel load cells (except 300t). Load cells are hermetically sealed. Easy to install or replace. IP68 protection rating. Weights & Measures and hazardous area approvals. 4 OverDrive Software Now Offers Invoicing Simplify billing procedures for your weighing transactions by using our vehicle scale software to handle your invoicing needs. OverDrive software is now available with an optional invoicing module. It simplifies billing by enabling you to generate invoices directly from the OverDrive database. There is no need to export data for use in a separate invoicing software package. OverDrive software streamlines your operation by handling everything from recording vehicle weights to generating invoices and compiling reports. An easy-to-use invoicing screen lets you choose how the invoices will be generated: for all accounts, for individual accounts, or for invoice cycles. Invoice cycles are groups of accounts that are billed weekly, monthly, or on any basis you specify. After choosing the accounts to be billed, select a date range and click the Generate button. OverDrive software does the rest, automatically generating invoices for the desired transactions. In addition to generating invoices, the software gives you extensive capabilities for managing them: Print - You can view invoices, print paper copies, or create electronic files. Lock - You can lock the final version of an invoice so that it cannot be changed. Remove - If changes are needed, you can delete unlocked invoices and generate new copies. Purge - You can delete older invoices from the database. With its built-in invoicing capabilities, OverDrive software makes business operations more efficient. There are no software compatibility problems to worry about because data does not need to be exported to other packages. By letting one software package do it all, you can handle your billing quickly and reliably. 5 Lightning Protection for Your Truck Scale A lightning strike can put a truck scale out of commission in an instant. You can avoid costly downtime by protecting your scale from electrical damage. A lightning strike or power surge can seriously damage high-performance electronic equipment. Today s scales feature electronic components that require surge protection. A typical truck scale installation can include several vulnerable components: load cells, junction boxes, scale terminals, remote displays, and personal computers. Damage from a lightning strike can be very costly. In many cases, unprotected electronic equipment will need to be repaired or replaced. Even if a warranty covers the repair costs, you still face the cost of the business that you lose every day that your truck scale is not operating. A StrikeShield lightning protection system is designed to be the main line of defense for your truck scale and scale house. It provides surge protectors for the electronic equipment and uses a single-point ground. By connecting the scale and its electronic components to the single ground point, you create a path that allows electricity to be discharged harmlessly into the ground. scale s load cells are equipped with gas-filled discharge tubes. When the tubes sense that energy is building, they discharge it safely. The POWERCELL MTX load cells that are used in our truck scales have proven their surge-protection capabilities, both in independent testing and real-life experience. The load cells are equipped with transient voltage suppressors. Those built-in circuit breakers react to the heat produced by a power surge to protect sensitive equipment. The combination of a StrikeShield lightning protection system and the additional features built into our electronic components provides reliable protection for your truck scale.
