3 Cargo Handling Requirements: Prepurging of Vessel s Tanks: Blanket Required: Yes Percent Oxygen in Nitrogen Blanket: 5% Vapor Space Purge: Loading Temperature Range: deg C. Transit Temperature Range: deg C. Discharge Temperature Range: deg C. Maximum Heating Coil Temperature: 100 deg C. Adjacent Maximum Cargo Temperature: N/A Regional Requirements: Transhipments Europe and APME/Heat exchangers all regions. te: Vessels using heat exchangers which require the product to be pumped through the heater, are not to be used for the carriage of Phenol. tes: If Nitrogen blanket is in place and Carrier chooses to transship, carrier must reapply nitrogen blanket on the cargo, both on the discharging and receiving ship, at their time, risk, and expense. te: Ship to Ship/Barge transhipments in Europe do not require to have the nitrogen blanket replaced due to local requirements. tes: Due to HSSE concerns, no transhipments of Phenol are to be carried out at Karimun anchorage. Tank Acceptance Requirements: All shore and ship cargo lines and tanks are to be presented clean (residual free), dry, odor free, and rust free, with good gaskets and pressure tested heating coils. Stainless Steel or Coated Tanks: Wall Wash Required: Stainless steel. (Marineline is not stainless steel.) Dependent on prior cargo. Wash Specifications: Hydrocarbons Pass Color Chlorides 5 Max. 20 ppm. Clear and free of suspended matter. 3

4 Sample Testing and Product Release: Loading: Shore tank approved by location based on local process. Manifold samples tested in field for appearance only. Product release based on shore tank quality. Discharge : Product acceptance based on key tests on arrival samples from each tank discharging. Manifold samples tested in the field for appearance only. Key Tests Test Method Specification Appearance ASTM D4176 Clear and free from suspended matter. Color ASTM D Max Water ASTM E % wt. max te:- For Sulphuric acid last three prior cargoes. All tank surfaces should be inspected for color discoloration from water/acid reaction with stainless steel. This discoloration can be absorbed by the phenol which can cause a colour contamination problem. In the case discoloration is noted, the Chemical MTA and Business QA should be advised before loading the tank. te: Rapid heating or overheating of Phenol may cause a colour off spec contamination. Safety Information and Incident Reporting. Safety Information: Use of full chemical suit and SCBA is highly recommended when in close proximity to phenol. e.g. but not limited to :- 1. Working at the manifold. 2. Standing close to the manifold observing start of transfer. 3. Manual gauging 4. Sampling 5. Tank Cleaning with Portable Machines 6. Opening any part of the cargo containment system (tank hatches, drains, etc) 7. Purging cargo pump cofferdams 8. Emergency Response 9. Any other task/location where the risk of contact with phenol can been deemed to exist 4

5 At other times it is recommended that during a phenol transfer, the number of persons allowed on the cargo deck be as required/restricted, and as a minimum, safety glasses should be worn at all times along with other appropriate PPE Phenol transfer is not to be started unless a supply of Poly Ethylene Glycol (PEG) is onboard the transfer vessel/vessels, and decontamination procedures are in place. In consideration of the ISM code, and IBC code 16.3 the carrier should ensure that procedures are in place for training of personnel involved in the transfer of Phenol, and also that verification checks are in place to ensure the integrity of the cargo system, prior to, and during the transfer and carriage of phenol. For more detailed information, refer to the SDS or e-sds for reportable spill/release quantities whether in the water, air or ground. Incident Reporting: International Registered Vessels : If an incident occurs call Shell International Trading and Shipping in London on (+44) Jones Act Vessels : If an incident occurs call the Shell 24 hr. incident number at The USA National response center telephone number is For additional marine cargo handling advice or information, contact Captain Eddie Trotter at ( ) Shell Chemical LP PO Box 4407 Houston Texas USA Tel Internet Disclaimer The information contained in this publication is, to the best of our knowledge, true and accurate, but any recommendations or suggestions that may be made are without guarantee, since the conditions of use are beyond our control.
