15 Current situation Trade growth is less than increased supply. Growth in global container volumes had returned to historical levels, and for 2011 forecast growth of around 7%. However, the current orderbook for new ships due to be delivered over the next four years has reached 4 million teu, or 28% of the current fleet, and around 1.6 million teu to be delivered this year, supply to grow at 11%. To make matters worse for carriers, the majority of these ships are over 7,000teu in size, which meant they would be added to east-west trades, such as Asia-Europe, rather than north-south routes. This is a reasonable sized orderbook, but if you are a carrier, the bad news is that a lot of this new capacity will be delivered this year We have seen a fair amount of new capacity, so I think it is a buyer s market. The CKYH (Cosco, K-Line, Yao Ming, Hanjin) Alliance would add nearly 500,000 teu of capacity (28%) to Asia-Europe this year, the Zim/Evergreen/CSCL alliance had already added around 450,000 teu (25%) and there was speculation that MSC was also about to launch a new Asia- Europe service. Next year the situation could change, as demand is expected to grow by more than 10% and container vessel supply increases will slip below this year s level to 1.2 million teu, 8%.

16 Container lines will see their financial performance worsen in Q2 With little sign that freight rates would show any significant improvement before July. The average operating margins among the 5 main container lines slumped from 13% in the third quarter of 2010 to -1% in the first quarter this year. There was, however, a wide variation in the Q1 operating margins of the individual carriers, ranging from 7% at Maersk to -13% at CSAV. The varying performance could prolong the current downturn, as concerted actions to curb the oversupply conditions are delayed, Carriers initial warnings about slot and container shortages have failed to materialise so far, as significant new vessel capacity has been added and investments in new container equipment have continued to stream in. Meanwhile, efforts to raise freight rates on the Far East to North Europe trade have been hampered by weak utilisation levels. Plans to raise rates by US$200-$300 per teu this month have been postponed to June, due to strong market resistance. The momentum is moving against carriers this year, with freight rates still trending down, even as the traditionally strong summer season looms,.
