2 INVENTORY MANAGEMENT COURSE This is a workshop for the warehouse or stockroom manager, the person in charge of what comes in and goes out of the company. Learners will understand the concept of inventory management and evaluate and apply the various processes and techniques of inventory management. The standard creates an awareness of the legislative framework governing inventory management in the public sector. Acquiring the competencies of this course will make the learners/practitioners increasingly cognisant of improving financial management, creating transparency and enhancing credibility within the inventory management environment. The course will equip government practitioners with skills in inventory management which will help them maximise the use of resources and improve service delivery. Who should attend? Public Employees at all levels that administer, manage or direct public asset and/or inventory, and these are from the following institutes; Departments (national and provincial) Public entities Constitutional institutions Municipalities and boards, commissions, companies, corporations, funds or other entities under the ownership control of a municipality Parliament and the provincial legislatures. Course Outcome By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to: Understand terms that are frequently used in warehouse management Identify the goals and objectives of inventory management, and measure their process against these goals Calculate safety stock, reorder points, and order quantities Evaluate inventory management systems Identify the parts of the inventory cycle Better maintain inventory accuracy Understand inventory management and its role in the public sector. Explain and calculate values for inventory for financial reporting. Evaluate and apply budget and planning processes and methods for inventory. Evaluate and apply inventory management techniques. 3 Course Outline What is Inventory? o To begin, participants will explore what inventory is and what key concepts (including LIFO, FIFO, backorders, and lead time) mean. Participants will also look at the goals and objectives of inventory management and analyze where their system can improve. Types of Inventory o This session will explore anticipation, fluctuation, lot size, and transportation inventories. Key Players o Next, participants will discuss what roles customers, top management, and employees play in the inventory management system. Legislative framework Setting up the Warehouse o This session will discuss the objectives of a warehouse and ways to maintain location accuracy. What Makes a Good Inventory Management System? o Next, participants will discuss types of inventory management systems and criteria for a good system. The Warehouse Inventory Cycle o This session will introduce the warehouse inventory cycle of demand, receiving, validation, and putaway. Identifying Demand o Participants will learn how to determine order quantities, re-order points, and safety stock through discussion and a case study. The Receiving Process Validating Inventory o This session will explore ways to validate the quality of merchandise. The Put-Away Process o Participants will discuss the five goals of the put-away process. Maintaining Inventory Accuracy o Next, participants will learn ways to keep their inventory organized and controlled. The Outbound Process o This session will look at the phases of the outbound process: picking, packing, loading, and shipping. Industry Trends o To conclude the workshop, we will explore some of the latest inventory management trends, including Six Sigma and the Just-In-Time (JIT) system.
