Training Objectives To Understand Why to Perform Carton Drop Test To Understand How to Perform Carton Drop Test To Understand How to Judge the Carton Drop Test Result 2

ISTA Instruction ISTA: International Safe Transit Association Founded in 1996 The objective of ISTA: To reduce in-transit damage through a standardized program of preshipment testing, certification and identification. 3

What s Carton drop test? Pre-Shipment Testing >Vibration >Impact test (Carton Drop Test) >Compression testing (Optional) 4

Why Carton drop test? >Why Pre-Shipment Testing? > Provide a means for a manufacturer to predetermine the probability of the safe arrival of their packaged-products at their destination through the utilization of tests developed to simulate the shocks and stresses normally encountered during handling and transportation. 5

When Carton drop test? Client request Protocol instruction Needn t do carton drop test for below case: 1. Garment and fabric inspections except garment with hanger package. 2. Packed products on a skid or pallet secured together as a single load. 3. When master carton weight equal or over 61lbs. 4. Any edge length of the master carton more than 0.9 m. 6

Test procedure 1A and 1B Application Procedure 1A: For packaged products weight 150 pounds or less when prepare for shipment. Procedure 1B: For packaged products weight more than 150 lb when prepared for shipment. 7

Identify faces, edges and corners Identify edges by the numbers of those two surfaces forming that edge and corners by the number of those three surfaces which meet to form that corner. For example, the edge formed by the top and right side is identified as 1-2 and the corner formed by the top, right side and near end is identified as

Preparation Procedure 1A At first, make sure the sample is passed sample (Include visual and function). Re-pack it to original condition, including any nylon packing straps. Then, select suitable floor. The floor should be flat, rigid base such as steel, concrete etc. 9

Drop height Choose the height according to carton s gross weight and free fall drop Packaged-product weight < 21 lb (9.545 kg) 21 =< & < 41 lb ( kg) 41 =< & < 61 lb ( kg) 61 =< & <100 lb ( kg) 100 =< & < 150 lb ( kg) Free fall drop height 30 in (0.762 m) 24 in (0.610 m) 18 in (0.457 m) 12 in (0.305 m) 8 in (0.203 m) 10

Drop sequence Drop Sequence (1 corner, 3 edges and 6 faces): 1. Test the most fragile face-3 corner, if not known, test the corner. 2. The shortest edge radiating from the corner tested. 3. The next longer edge from the corner tested 4. The longest edge radiating from the corner tested 5. one of the smallest faces 6. the opposite small face 7. one of the medium faces 8. the opposite medium face 9. one of the largest faces 10. the opposite largest face 11

Procedure 1B Procedure 1B 1. Drop Height should be 6 inches. 2. Drop Sequence (6 faces): one of the smallest faces the opposite smallest face one of the medium faces the opposite medium face one of the largest faces the opposite largest face 12

Sample size Sample size should: Follow the client s requirement; If no, according to the protocol. Normally, drop 1 carton per type of package. 13

Test result Draw the Conclusion Inspect both the package and the products (Include visual and function) after drop test. Check maximum 24 samples in the master carton. Select samples which are close to the test corner and the edges projected from it. 14

Test result If any damage or malfunction is found on the product, the result for drop test will be failed. If any slight crush is found on the master carton, it will not be counted as defect. The result is passed. If the master carton has serious crush or open seam or crush is found on the inner salable carton, make a remark on the report and give a pending result. If a product comes out from the carton during carton drop test, the result should be failed. if any safety issue was found, the result should be failed. 15
