2 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY VEHICLE SECURITY & ACCESSORIES Supplier capability in China EXECUTIVE SUMMARY China suppliers are looking forward to stronger export sales in the months ahead After suffering significant loss of orders in 2009, many are anticipating revenue to revert or go beyond precrisis levels this year Customs statistics support optimistic projections, with exports of several categories already on an upswing Overseas shipments of vehicle alarms, in particular, rose 68 percent YoY in terms of volume and 3 percent in value Compared with the same period in 2008, these levels are 38 and 7 percent higher Suppliers see growth opportunities in various geographic markets, with nations continuing to recover from the economic slowdown In the next 12 months, many will continue to fortify their footholds in the EU and North America, which currently contribute more than 30 percent to sales of alarms, locking systems, seats and bumpers Several companies also intend to explore emerging markets in Africa, Central and South America, the Middle East, Eastern Europe and the ASEAN, still wary of the economic situation in the first two areas The following are some of the key trends we see in line with suppliers efforts to boost competitiveness in target markets: Quotes of existing models are expected to remain stable, if not decline, in coming months as price competition intensifies Reductions are forecast to affect primarily lowend lines Amid rising costs and a stronger yuan, suppliers will continue improving efficiency to minimize the effect of the aforementioned strategy on margins Several intend to invest in machines that will provide greater speed and precision, and enhance product performance The shift mix toward highervalue lines will also remain a strong trend in line with efforts to boost profitability and competitiveness To this end, a number of enterprises are allocating up to 10 percent of revenue for R&D Upcoming releases will boast better performance-price ratios Pricing development efforts will range from improving primary functions to enabling greater versatility Environmental awareness will also exert a strong influence on designs, particularly with regard to component and raw material choices In fabric-based lines, more models are anticipated to incorporate plant-based inputs or nontoxic synthetics This report covers the major exports of China s vehicle security and accessories industry, namely electronic security and safety systems, interior and exterior add-ons, and garage and tire repair equipment The categories are discussed in separate sections For each line, details about the different types offered, their typical features and price determinants are provided The latest trends in design, materials and functions are discussed as well Information on the supplier base can also be found The Industry Overview elaborates on issues affecting production and exports It also identifies the common strategies suppliers are employing to cope with challenges and enhance competitiveness To reflect the industry structure, the majority of manufacturers and trading companies featured in this report are local, privately owned enterprises The rest consists of Hong Kong- and foreign-invested businesses More than three-fourths of the companies are based in Guangdong and Zhejiang provinces Combined shipments of the two areas generate 50 percent of China s total revenue from exports of vehicle alarms, locking systems, seats and bumpers In this report 36 in-depth company profiles 160 top-selling export products Supplier demographics Supplier survey Industry statistics & charts METHODOLOGY To produce this report, Global Sources surveyed a wide range of suppliers Rather than focus simply on high-profile makers, we compiled a representative sample of large, midsize and emerging manufacturers All profiled companies are export-oriented professional suppliers that are verified by Global Sources Each supplier is confirmed to be authentic with a legally registered business All companies are visited three or more times to ensure they are export-ready and have real offices and products The listed contact person has been verified to represent the registered company In each case, companies were required to answer specific questions designed to verify their manufacturing and export credentials All profiled suppliers participated in a survey designed to provide insight into product and price trends, and challenges facing the industry All survey questions are single choice Suppliers are ranked based on a 6-star ranking system Companies with a higher star ranking provide more business information and verification reports on their Global Sources online homepages Suppliers rated 5 or 6 stars have a Credit Check report from First Advantage or Sino-Trust and a Supplier Capability Assessment report provided by Bureau Veritas online The rankings are correct at the time of publication and may be subject to change wwwchinasourcingreportscom 3

4 INDUSTRY OVERVIEW INDUSTRY OVERVIEW China suppliers of vehicle security systems and other auto accessories are gearing up for stronger overseas demand in the months ahead, with major economies continuing to recover In the former, many are expecting sales to reach, if not exceed, precrisis levels this year and through 2011 Certain lines are already exhibiting anticipated growth During the seven-month period ending July 2010, exports of vehicle alarms surged 68 percent YoY to exceed 52 million units The shipments had a total value of $614 million, 3 percent higher than in 2009 Compared with 2008 figures, volume was up 38 percent, while sales rose 7 percent Overseas shipments of locking systems reached 184 million kilograms, an upturn of more than 50 percent from the same period in 2009 and only 4 percent lower than in 2008 Revenue advanced 77 percent YoY to $1716 million, up 18 percent from sales between January and July two years ago Despite this strong showing, however, suppliers remain cautious since major markets still need to extricate themselves fully from the 2008 financial crisis Consequently, many are stepping up measures to expand market reach in the event that the slow economic recovery of the US and the EU weakens demand The two areas currently account for about one-third of overseas sales To offset the possible drop in orders from two of their major export destinations, companies are offering more options across all price points to penetrate areas showing stronger growth In their R&D work, enterprises are incorporating features that will differentiate their products and allow better margins Manufacturers are opting not to rely solely on low quotes to compete for orders, with climbing outlay and a stronger yuan exerting pressure on profits Wages, in particular, are currently 15 percent higher than they were a year ago The upswing is expected to continue in the next couple of years, albeit at a lesser rate Meanwhile, the yuan has appreciated about 2 percent since it was taken off its peg against the US dollar earlier this year Should the currency strengthen by 4 percent, suppliers profitability will be affected severely The maturing technology and the increasing transparency of the market are also spurring efforts toward differentiated products The two factors are causing competition to intensify since customers now have greater bargaining power, having more insight into technical specifications and manufacturing outlay Quotes for low-end products have been pushed back 10 to 15 percent in the past 12 months despite the upswing in certain expenses Midrange prices, meanwhile, went down by as much as 5 percent The trend is expected to continue in 2011 R&D trends Under efforts to sustain the momentum, enterprises are taking advantage of the opportunities created by the global financial crisis in the aftermarket In the electronics sector, makers are focusing efforts on parking aids, GPS devices and keyless entry systems These are seen as having high growth prospects amid rising security and safety concerns With regard to the nonelectronic categories, a wider range of car care and cleaning products such as lubricants, cleansers and related tools is anticipated Seat covers, cushions and mats are expected to come in more varieties as well For many companies, particularly those specializing in electronic lines, achieving better performance-price ratios is the top R&D objective In US- and EU-bound models, this translates to improvements in primary Supplier summary Suppliers surveyed 36 Export sales $2725mn Export ratio 70% OEM business 47% Capacity utilized 65% Annual R&D spending $212mn Full-time employees 10,178 Data: All surveyed suppliers functions rather than the integration of extras Amid the slowdown of economic recovery in the two areas, makers are opting for no-frills designs compliant with E-Mark, CE and RoHS requirements because such units can be priced much lower than multifunction types Basic GPS trackers, for one, are 30 percent less expensive than those with anti-theft alarms Compared with systems having both cameras and alarms, the difference in quotes is about 60 percent Designs for ASEAN members, the Middle East and South America, on the other hand, are more of the multifunction variety Suppliers are banking on the economic growth of these areas to fuel demand for highervalue lines Many enterprises, regardless of their target destinations, are also responding to rising eco-consciousness worldwide Categories such as car care products, cushions and mats, for instance, are incorporating more plant-based elements or nontoxic synthetics Still under efforts to provide better value, makers are supporting product improvements with upgrades in QC and services Strengthening capability Suppliers with in-house operations revolving around assembly are investing between 3 to 5 percent of sales in R&D, while those producing their own components typically allocate up to 10 percent In addition, a number of enterprises are cooperating with academic institutions and providers of wwwchinasourcingreportscom 7
