2 02 Supporting modern rail industry Supporting modern rail industry 03 Supporting modern rail industry Build your rail with BOC The rail industry has been the backbone of the British economy for decades. Since BOC s early days, we have been supporting companies operating in this sector, building our knowledge and understanding of the market along with customer needs. This second-to-none expertise allowed us to become the market leading supplier of welding gases, welding consumables and gas related services to the rail industry. In recent years the demand for public and freight rail has increased, resulting in an investment in rail infrastructure leading to new lines and major upgrades to the network. BOC is proud to play its part in this significant rail revitalisation programme. Projects such as Thameslink or Crossrail are just some examples where our products and services are used every day. We have been working closely with main and sub-contractors to make sure that we support them every step of the way. Our innovative products and solutions are designed to optimise productivity and operations across a broad range of rail activities, including: Rolling stock manufacturing and maintenance Rolling stock parts manufacturing and supply Rail infrastructure build and maintenance Public transportation such as tramways, metro and overground train services Tramways In recent years tramways came back on the agenda of the local authorities responsible for public transportation. They are considered as a modern ecological alternative to buses in already congested town and city centres. BOC customers benefit from a full range of innovative products and solutions including: Oxygen and fuel gases for rail welding and cutting Gases for R&D and electronic equipment testing Innovative GENIE cylinder, which has been approved by Network Rail for its lightweight and mobility HYMERA hydrogen fuel cell generator for use as a clean and quiet off-grid power source LINDOFLAMM special burner technology for heat processes and rail bending High quality PPE products All products are supported by our gas and welding engineers who can provide you with unparalleled knowledge and expertise. We have an established nationwide network so expert advice is always there where you need it. At BOC we are a part of this new trend supplying both tram operators and infrastructure building companies.

It has been designed with mobile welding in mind. Made of carbon fibre its high durability and light weight ensure its easily manoeuvrable along the rail. Using the attachable wheels and extendable handle you can safely stack and transfer two cylinders at once. With a digital display and low content alarm which sounds when there is 25% and 10% gas remaining there is no risk of running out in the middle of a job. All GENIE cylinders are 300bar and they contain up to 30% more gas than comparable standard cylinders, resulting in less downtime on your project. HYMERA unique off-grid power for use on the tracks HYMERA is a hydrogen fuel cell generator and an environmentally friendly alternative solution to traditional diesel or petrol generators. As the rail network connects the UK from John O Groates to Land s End, your works could be in a densely populated area, a conservation area or underground. So you have to consider the local area and the impact of your power supply. Traditional diesel and petrol generators can be difficult to transport and create noise pollution inconveniencing the local neighbourhood and environment. With BOC s portable HYMERA, these are issues of the past HYMERA uses ground-breaking hydrogen fuel cell technology, so is an environmentally friendly solution with water being the only by-product. It is also extremely quiet, typically less than 45 decibels at 5 meters, making it the ideal solution for works in densely populated areas, even through the night. PPE to keep your employees safe BOC rail customers can benefit from a wide range of protective equipment that is critical to safety on a busy rail construction site. Whether you are looking for head, eye or face protection products, we have it all. With over 65 stores nationwide and an extensive network of IWS agents who can deliver high quality welding and safety products directly to you, we re never far away. Additionally our products are available to purchase through the BOC online shop, where you can order and manage your account at the click of a button. BOC CP7 and GN7 checks The British Compressed Gases Association (BGCA) recommends that regulators and flashback arrestors are checked annually and replaced every five years. These checks need to be carried out by someone who has sufficient practical experience of oxy-fuel gas equipment, theoretical knowledge of equipment, potentia l defects and hazards and an understanding of gas properties. BOC can provide this for you, all inspections include: A thorough functionality and leak test of all components; regulators; flashback arrestors; hoses; torches and associated fittings A full report of the inspector s findings An update by the inspector on current health and safety and BGCA Codes of Practise Safety Training BOC safety training courses are delivered through BOC s network of technical support engineers. They cover a wide variety of areas including, although not limited to the following: Gas characteristics Cylinder-identification and safety Cylinder handling Cylinder storage Gas equipment Lighting and shutting down procedures Legislation

4 06 Supporting modern rail industry Supporting modern rail industry 07 Innovative solutions to improve your manufacturing processes At BOC we understand the pressures for more passenger and freight services increasing the demand on you for rolling stock. Modern trains need to be economical to operate and combine high capacity, with lightweight. We have developed a range of innovative products and technologies that help you to improve quality and reduce costs, while meeting the complex demands of train operators and regulators. Thermal spraying improve corrosion and wear resistance with BOC LINSPRAY technology Engines, turbines, pistons, wheelsets and bogies are just some of the parts for which wear resistance and corrosion protection is critical for long and successful service. With BOC LINSPRAY thermal spraying technology you can apply coatings to improve their characteristics. BOC can supply you with all the fuel gases, as well as cooling gases needed in the most common thermal spraying processes, such as HVOF, plasma spraying or flame spraying. If your process benefits from using any special gas mixtures these are readily available and our experts are always on hand to advise. For the HVOF processes, BOC offers carbon dioxide solutions, delivered through BOC patented nozzles, guaranteeing effective expansion and optimal jet constriction which control the coating temperatures. LINDOFLAMM Innovative metal heating technology Manufacturing or repairing trains often requires you to weld thick steel elements. Many of them would need to be pre-heated before welding or heat treated to achieve specific hardness. This is extremely important when it comes to wheels and tyres to make sure they are safe and durable for extended periods of exploitation. With LINDOFLAMM technology from BOC you can now benefit from even closer control and more efficient heating process. This proprietary oxy-acetylene technology allows for quicker heat transfers and control than alternative methods saving time and money. Our LINDOFLAMM application can be used for both manual and automated processes making it highly customised to your specific needs. BOC is the only company to supply the complete heating process including gas, specially designed nozzles and technical support. Additive manufacturing Rail engineers are faced with the challenge of designing and producing components that are both durable and lightweight; additive manufacturing is a modern technology that can provide the perfect solution. Repairs and maintenance of rolling stock that have been in use for a long time bring unique challenges. It might be that the required parts are simply not available anymore or that using lighter materials brings additional operational economies. This is why increasingly more spare part manufacturers turn their attention to processes such as selective laser sintering and laser metal deposition, which can be used to produce the required parts in short production runs. BOC is a market leader in additive manufacturing and is well placed to advise on using this technology in manufacturing rail parts. With our world-class gases, innovative supply solutions and technical expertise you can be sure that your manufacturing or 3D printing process runs in an optimal way. Technological development and innovation As part of the Linde Group, BOC has a global network of process experts and access to world class research and development facilities in Munich, Germany and at BOC s Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) in Wolverhampton. BOC also actively engages with the key rail industry bodies and research centres including the Institute for Rail Welding. It allows us to provide unbiased advice on the best solutions to suit specific manufacturing processes. We are also a member of the Achilles/RSIQS rail supply network so you can be sure that by choosing BOC products and services they are wsupplied to you by reliable industry leader and to the highest quality and safety standards.
