2 Baggage Handling Systems BHS Time was, baggage handling was as simple as luggage on a conveyor. Unfolding world events and advances in technology have changed all that. For nearly 20 years, ControlTouch Systems, Inc. has been a leader in control systems integration. And for 10 years we have designed, programmed and commissioned baggage handling control systems (BHS). Since the events of 9/11 we have integrated over 100 explosive detection systems (EDSs) from all major manufacturers into baggage handling systems at over 20 airports. Our control system designs continually meet or exceed the Planning Guidelines and Design Standards (PGDS) published by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and are extensively tested before being certified for use in the nation s airports. Secure, efficient and technologically advanced BHS systems require a collaborative effort between airports, airlines, the TSA, BHS conveyor providers and control systems integrators. At ControlTouch we excel at engineering these systems and keeping the technology behind the scenes while ensuring the BHS system operates transparently to the passenger. 3 Central Control Room Monitoring CCR Central Control Room CCR Offering On-Site Monitoring With ControlTouch Remote Support To ensure that the BHS system continues to work efficiently, many airports have turned to ControlTouch for central control rooms (CCRs) that not only monitor the BHS system but alert operators when, and sometimes even before, a problem occurs. In airports where the BHS system is mission-critical, we equip the CCRs with redundant systems that ensure 100% uptime. The CCRs can be connected through a secure VPN link to ControlTouch s central monitoring facility to assist in troubleshooting and resolving equipment issues. Server Hardware Central facility to monitor all BHS systems. Supports SAC and MDS systems. Central location for PLC controller. UPS powered. Custom configured per customer s requirements. Scalable from single to multiple BHS systems. SAC and MDS systems function with all major brands of equipment. Remote monitoring by ControlTouch available. control touch booklet.indd 3 6/2/09 8:45:09 AM

4 Sortation Allocation Computer SAC A Sortation Allocation Computer With Powerful Data Interpretation and Reporting Capability ControlTouch s CTSort, a Sortation Allocation Computer (SAC), is the director in the BHS system. It interfaces with the airport (or airline s) host system and receives bag source message (BSM) data as passengers check in their baggage. CTSort works whether the luggage is routed by bar code scanners or RFID equipment. It communicates this information to the PLC controllers and ensures the bag is routed to its correct flight. The flight routing tables are contained within CTSort and can be modified automatically or manually by operators. CTSort Server Equipment Racks CTSort also includes powerful reporting capability based on Crystal Reports, the defacto industry standard. Included are standard reports developed for use in BHS environments, but custom reports can also be developed based on your requirements. CTSort Sample Screen CTSort ControlTouch s Sort Allocation Computer (SAC) designed under the Windows platform. Designed around server-class (HP, Dell, etc.) computers. Supplied either as a redundant or a non-redundant system. Sabre-certified BSM interface. Provides bar code and RFID translation and routing. Flight table editor. Early bag storage capability. Detailed reports for baggage and routing statistics using Crystal Reports, the defacto industry standard. control touch booklet.indd 4 6/2/09 8:45:12 AM

5 Maintenance Diagnostic System MDS Drilling Down to the Source of the Problem and the Solution Maintenance Diagnostics System (MDS). Designed around server-class (HP, Dell, etc.) computers. Supplied either as a redundant or a nonredundant system. Supports multiple monitors; both small and large screen. Provided with UPS backup power protection. Designed around off-theshelf SCADA/HMI software (FactoryTalk, CiTect, WonderWare). Supports multiple client workstations. Compatible with all major PLC brands. Layout Overview Detailed real-time alarm reporting. The Maintenance Diagnostic System (MDS) constantly monitors the health of the BHS system. When a problem is detected, the MDS immediately alerts an operator with visual and audible signals. In some cases, a potential problem is detected before it causes issues within the system. The system guides the operator to the problem area through drill-down graphic and text guides. The problem can be identified quickly and corrective action can be taken with minimal delays. The MDS is designed around a client/server architecture. The application screens and the data collection engine reside on the server and the clients connect to the server via a network connection. Multiple clients are supported and can be local to the airport or remote through the Internet. control touch booklet.indd 5 System Status 6/2/09 8:45:14 AM

6 Machine Control PLC Making Things Move Efficiently A BHS system consists largely of conveyors and sortation devices. These mechanical devices utilize motors, solenoid valves and other electromechanical equipment to produce motion and to move a passenger s bag from the ticket counter to the airplane or from the airplane to a claim unit. The mechanical equipment relies on machine controls to perform its function. The machine controls incorporate PLCs (programmable logic controllers), which are essentially a type of industrial computer, to monitor sensors and to activate motors and actuators to produce the desired result with the conveyors. The PLCs and industrial control equipment are typically contained in motor control panels (MCPs) and for larger airports there can be hundreds of MCPs utilized. ControlTouch provides complete turnkey control system designs and equipment; including: CAD electrical design, PLC programming, HMI programming, panel fabrication, system simulation and emulation, field commissioning, complete system testing and TSA certification. control touch booklet.indd 6 Motor Control Panel MCP PLC-based machine control. 7 Baggage Identification Systems ID Our Exclusive Bar Code Systems Method Virtually Eliminates Tracking Errors ControlTouch Systems has developed standard communications drivers for the most popular ATR scanner arrays used in airport applications, including both Accusort and SICK. Our technique for scanner communication utilizes the PLC to read the data from the scanner arrays and then to request routing data from CTSort. By direct connecting the scanner arrays into the PLC system, tracking errors are virtually eliminated. ATR Scanner Full scanner statistics are collected by CTSort, indicating read rates and alerting maintenance personnel when scanner maintenance may be required. Radio Frequency Identification Ensures More Reliable Baggage ID Radio Frequency Identification of baggage avoids the problem of misread or missed bar codes and is a much more reliable method of identifying baggage with read rates of over 99%. ControlTouch was one of the first companies to program and commission a 100% RFID system in an airport, utilizing 160 Symbol RFID scanners and 42 L3 examiner EDS machines. 8 The ControlTouch Difference In the last 10 years, ControlTouch Systems has worked with a large and diverse group of airports. And we do more than large projects we have provided cost-effective controls solutions with no performance drawbacks for many smaller airports. There s even more to our story. We invite you to view our airport projects and case studies at Breckenridge Lane, Louisville, Kentucky fax control touch booklet.indd 8 6/2/09 8:45:22 AM
