1 Ohio Department of Transportation Office of Traffic Engineering April 16, 2004 To Holders of the Traffic Engineering Manual (TEM) and the Sign Design Manual (SDM, TEM Section 295-2): As of April 16, 2004, Parts 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6 of the Traffic Engineering Manual (TEM) have been revised. This revision includes an extensive revision of the Sign Design Manual (SDM). The revised manuals and the separate revision packages for them are available from the ODOT Design Reference Resource Center ( using the TEM and SDM links (the SDM link is located with the one for the TEM), or from the Traffic Home Page ( using the Publications/Documents link. The revised pages should be printed as a double-sided document and then inserted into the manual, replacing the existing sheets. Per ODOT policy, paper copies of the revisions to these manuals are no longer distributed to all holders. Revisions will only be available via the web pages noted above, or as part of a new manual. The TEM Publication Record lists the sections in that manual that are involved in this revision. A list with details of the changes made is also available. It can be accessed via the link below. Pages of the TEM where text has been revised are noted by the Revised April 16, 2004" notation at the bottom of the page. Also, a change bar in the right margin highlights where the revision was made. Pages of the TEM that have been reprinted as part of this revision only because of changes in page numbers are noted with (April 16, 2004) at the bottom. When revisions in a chapter resulted in changes in a Table of Content, the full Table of Content has been reprinted as part of the revision. The changes made in the SDM revision primarily relate to updating the sign code numbers to the new ones using the new format. To expedite publication of this revision of the SDM, most of the revisions are being made as pen and ink changes. Essentially, every page of the current SDM is being revised, replaced or deleted, and there are also some new designs being added. A list of the revisions and an outline of the suggested revision and assembly method has been posted with the SDM revision package. Paper copies of the revised SDM, with the pen and ink changes noted on the pages, will be available.
