2 NLA AGM Keynote Address by Johny Smith Developing Namibia into a Transport & Logistics Hub Johny Smith, Chief Executive Officer of WBCG Johny Smith, CEO of the Walvis Bay Corridor Group (WBCG), delivered the keynote address at the NLA AGM. The WBCG, a Private Public Partnership (PPP), was created in 2000 to promote an increase of imports and exports via the Port of Walvis Bay, between Southern Africa and the rest of the world. Its core mandate of service includes facilitation of business development, cross border facilitation and infrastructure along the three corridor (Trans-Kalahari, Trans-Caprivi, Trans- Cunene) routes. The Government of the Republic of Namibia invested in major transport infrastructure, to optimize Namibia s unique location as well as to establish new trade routes, linking Namibia with the rest of the These in- SADC region. clude: - Port development - Rail development** - Road development** **links with Angola, Botswana, Zambia) When Namibia became independent, all trade was done via South Africa as Namibia had no direct connections with any of its other neighbouring countries. Until 2003, there was no direct shipping connections to the international world, neither transit traffic for the neighbouring countries via Namibia, existed. With the initial development of the Walvis Bay Corridors, it functioned simply as transport corridors. However, since then, not only has the WBCG handled various commodities such as copper, second hand vehicles, equipment and machinery, frozen fish, chicken, meat, textiles, chemicals, but it has developed into alternative trade routes for Southern African countries. The WBCG has branches in Lusaka, Zambia (2005), Johannesburg, South Africa (2008), Lubumbashi, DRC (2012) as well as a representative office in Sao Paulo Brazil since April Although the Port of Walvis Bay was only known as a fishing port in 1994, it has since been developed as an alternative trade for Southern Africa. Building on its successes, the WBCG will continue working towards developing Namibia into a Transport and Logistics Hub, by Complimentary to this vision, Namibia is currently developing a new Transport Master Plan, which will pave the way for effective trade via the four modes of transport, within the next twenty years.
