Jobsite handling and preparation The difference between success and failure in the salvage business is: ORGANIZATION & PLANNING

Organization means: Proper sequence of material removal Cleaning De-nailing, end trimming, stacking Sorting For width, length, grade, species, etc. Preparation for transport Banding, strapping, loading

Planning means: Knowing your materials which to bring home and which to leave at the site. Training - Building a team of skilled workers. Planning ahead more than just one day ahead. Operational efficiency Having the right tools and equipment on the job.

How to make friends with Demo contractors Call them up. Keep calling. Talk to them at their level: time = money ; use a business-like approach; understand the timing of their demo project. Visit wrecking sites - understand the machinery and the process of wrecking. Know your species know what is valuable and what is not. Call them again.

Good salvage site packaging

Material Handling The Golden Rule Moving materials adds NO value, but always increases costs.

Trucks & Trucking The Man WILL get you, so be prepared. Federal DOT trumps State Police every time Letters to learn: GVWR: gross vehicle weight rating CGVWR: combined gross vehicle weight rating CDL: commercial drivers license

Not following the law - running overweight, - operating unsafe equipment, -using poor loading practices - not being organized about trucking will eventually cost you

What to do: Run 26,000 lb. maximum GVW or CGVW and you won t need a CDL (but you will need a medical card) Learn what your rig can handle weigh loads, photograph them, study the photographs, compare board footage to weight, watch your axle loading, look at your springs, pay attention!

More to do: Learn from your local State Police Keep a log book You must have fire extinguisher, flares Inspect your truck lights, tires, brakes, etc. Think about hiring a retired professional driver if your on the road a lot Pay attention!

Your basic low-buck trailer 10,000 lb. GVW, 18 deckover

Rough Terrain Forklift lb. capacity best. Good for uneven ground.

Airless Pneumatic tire, Propane, 5,000 lb. with side shift - best type

Dual Wheel, 6,000lb. Wide Carriage, Pneumatic Tire

Warehousing and Inventory

Lumber sticked for air drying

Storage done right

Dead stacked, properly blocked. With square end and wild end.

End trimmed and properly stacked

Outside Storage no tarps. Always stick it up for ventilation

Stacking sticks keep lumber packs stable and allows drying

Ratchet Straps excellent for short term use, such as bringing lumber back from salvage site for further

For long term storage, ¾ steel banding is the best way to secure lumber packs.

Cantilever Racks

Expensive, but handy

Properly stored materials

Call to Action! As industry downsizes and goes offshore, companies are liquidating and closing plants. Good machinery and equipment is readily available and at very reasonable prices. The Demolition industry is actively becoming a recycling industry. More materials will be saved from buildings in the future and markets will open up. Now is the time to set up your deconstruction and remanufacturing operation.
