13 NATIONAL CERTIFICATE MODULE: UNIT SPECIFICATION SUPPORT NOTES UNIT NUMBER: UNIT TITLE: CONSTRUCTION: MASON PAVIOR: PROVIDING SURFACE FINISHES (FLAG PAVING) SUPPORT NOTES: This part of the unit specification is offered as guidance. None of the sections of the support notes is mandatory. NOTIONAL DESIGN LENGTH: SQA allocates a notional design length to a unit on the basis of time estimated for achievement of the stated standards by a candidate whose starting point is as described in the access statement. The notional design length for this unit is 80 hours. The use of notional design length for programme design and timetabling is advisory only. PURPOSE This unit is designed to enable the candidate to develop skills and knowledge relating to the skills and practical work involved in providing surface finishings using flag paving. The unit will help in acquiring the skills needed for interpreting technical information, providing dimensional positioning, selecting materials/components, preparing materials and components, positioning and securing components, and repairing surface defects. SQA publishes summaries of NC units for easy reference, publicity purposes, centre handbooks, etc. The summary statement for this unit is as follows: This unit will help you to acquire the skills and knowledge to interpret technical information, prepare, position and secure materials and components and repair surface defects. On completion of the unit you will have a good working knowledge of the various methods of cleaning, bonding and matching different types of flags and the reasons for their use. CONTENT/CONTEXT The candidate successfully completing this unit will require underpinning knowledge and skills relating to interpreting instructions, planning, organising and adopting safe working environments but the unit is primarily aimed at candidates whose normal working place would be a roads construction site or similar environment. APPROACHES TO GENERATING EVIDENCE The achievement of the underpinning knowledge required for this unit would be assisted by the use of slides and videos, and hands-on experience. Tutors/trainers should demonstrate practical elements step-by-step until the candidates feel confident enough to attempt them on their own. Safety factors, where relevant, should be thoroughly emphasised. 13

14 ASSESSMENT PROCEDURES Candidates will be able to provide evidence of performance using a variety of methods. These will include: (a) (b) (c) (d) Performance at work (recorded in the Candidate's Achievement Record or other methods). Performance in training (recorded in the Candidate's Achievement Record or other methods). Simulated exercises (skill/progress results). Past achievements/experiences eg. letters of endorsement; certificate or testimonies from previous employers. Evidence gathered from the workplace will be the preferred method(s), however, there may be situations were this is inappropriate or the evidence is insufficient. Supplementary evidence will also be required to demonstrate the underpinning knowledge related to the competences in the unit. EXEMPLARS A set of drawings and photographs showing the work carried out by the candidate with a testimony by the employer or senior manager of the company that the work was carried out entirely or substantially by the candidate. PROGRESSION This unit forms part of the level II SVQ in Construction: Mason Pavior. Each unit is a free standing unit and units are not necessarily taken in a prescribed order although there may be a logical sequence to the acquisition of the skills and knowledge concerned. To gain the award the candidate must successfully complete all of the units laid down for the SVQ, details of which may be obtained from SQA. RECOGNITION Many SQA NC units are recognised for entry/recruitment purposes. For up-to-date information see the SQA guide 'Recognised and Recommended Groupings'. REFERENCES 1.
