Skills and Expertise Offered Zaragoza is a city of 682,000 inhabitants and the fifth most populous city in Spain. Located on the river Ebro, it is around 300 km from Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Bilbao and Toulouse (France). The modal split in 2004 in Zaragoza was 17 percent pedestrians, 29 percent public transport and 54 percent private motor vehicles. The Zaragoza Urban Transport Company (TUZSA) provides bus transportation services. The company has nearly 750 employees and owns a fleet of around 350 vehicles, which make approximately 115 million trips annually over 50 urban lines. Some of the buses are specifically designed to transport people with severe mobility difficulties and are used exclusively to provide door to door transportation. In 2006, the City Council developed a Sustainable Mobility Plan focused in intermodality. This plan proposed several alternatives to improve mobility in the city, regarding the following areas: Pedestrian paths, Railway network, Exchange stations, Tram, Parking areas, Fare integration, Bicycles, and Taxi minibus. In 2008, the city introduced the Bizi bike rental system. The resulting increase in bicycle use has meant that future revisions of Zaragoza s General Urban Plan will have to include improvements in cycling infrastructure and the implementation of measures to promote intermodality, in which the bicycle is regarded as an essential element of sustainable city life. Another mode of transportation in use in Zaragoza is the cable car, installed for the international exposition Water and Sustainable Development held in The cable car covers a distance of 1.5 km and is operated during weekends and on public holidays. 2 two regional research entities specialized in the areas of logistics and ICT: Zaragoza Logistics Center (ZLC) is a research institute established by the Government of Aragón in Spain in partnership with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the University of Zaragoza. It has been created as an international center of excellence for education and research in logistics and supply chain management that actively engages with industry and the public sector to develop and disseminate knowledge. The ZLC is directly linked to the development of PLAZA the largest logistics park in Europe and it has partnered with the Center for Transportation and Logistics at MIT to form the MIT Zaragoza International Logistics Program. Also, ZLC is member of the CiVitas network, represented by the Transport Department. This Department is working in all issues related to infrastructures, freight transportation and mobility, urban mobility and logistics corridors. All issues that are relevant for the main topics considered in the policies of transport in Spain and in the UE in general. That includes the promotion of multimodality, the creation of transport networks and the improvement of logistics parks as fundamental nodes for the development of transport and the supply chain. Website: The Transport Research Department carries out several research projects in several areas of the transportation field we make a special emphasis on the following: MOBITRANS: Innovative Information Technologies for passengers so as to encourage sustainable urban mobility The aim of the project is to encourage sustainable urban mobility and the use of public transport by researching and developing new information technologies for the operational planning of urban passenger movement. The project considers the empirical development of a passenger support system in terms of the choice of routes and modes of transport within urban settings that supports the use of sustainable modes, encourages the use of public transport that is reliable and useful to passengers, thereby gaining more passenger confidence in the information provided by the routing systems. This is the key to making an impact on mobility improvement through these kinds of systems. Therefore, the system must overcome the limitations mentioned above to make it more reliable and useful to passengers.

3 DISTURB: Understanding and Organizing the Distribution of Urban Goods The goal of the project is to develop in depth knowledge of urban logistics, all while considering three issues: The relationship between the land use structure and urban logistics strategies: to understand the impact and the influence of freight distribution on the structure and the features of the urban area. To develop business models for urban logistics: the definition of a theoretical structure and identification of the most proper instruments and plans to build business models for urban logistics. To develop tools to improve the comprehension and interaction between offer and demand, and also the dynamics of urban freight distribution systems. Other projects: TRANSURBAN. Funded by Fundación Transpirenaica Instituto Tecnológico de Aragón (ITA) is a technology center that holds the Spanish Knowledge Center in ICT for Logistics (ITA elogistics). The mission of this center is the generation, adaptation, transfer and dissemination of knowledge in the application of ICT in the logistics supply chain in order to generate new knowledge regarding ICT for logistics and to support companies in the development of ICT solutions for their supply chain.

4 The main R&D lines of ITA elogistics are: Adaptive Processes, which main objective is the development of logistic processes which can be adapted by themselves by using ICT solutions. ICT for the future supply chain, which main objective is to facilitate decision making in a collaborative way and in real time between all the actors who perform tasks along the supply chain. Intelligent Transportation Systems Inside the structure of ITA elogistics is the elogistics Lab, which main objective is to serve as a technological demonstration environment for all projects conducted within the center and to assess the potential for integration of different technologies and incorporation into the basic processes of value in: safety, traceability, flexibility, responsiveness, predictive maintenance, etc. Also, ITA elogistics is going to hold the Demo National Center of ICT for Logistics. This will be a lab where tecnological companies and logistics companies can prove ICT solutions for specific problems in real environments. This center will be ready by the end of ITA elogistics has a permanent contact with companies and clusters not only in Aragon but all over Spain, which let ITA knows the real needs of industry and to develop applied research projects in the sector.
