2 OVERVIEW Distribution utilities are judged, by both regulators and their customers, by how consistently they can deliver power across their service territory. Both system reliability - minor and sustained outages, and power quality - temporary fluctuations in power, must be reported and monitored to provide both stakeholders with assurances that their utility is doing its best to delivery consistent and high quality power. Several reliability indices (SAIDI, SAIFI, CAIDI, MAIFI) have been developed to gauge and benchmark utility performance. This course will familiarize attendees with common reliability indices and power quality issues and improvement strategies. Attendees will develop strategies for reliability improvement in order to reduce the number and frequency of outages as well as the number of customers impacted. Effective distribution planning is essential to improve reliability and maximize both capital and O&M expenditures. While modern devices and smart grid technologies can improve a utility s reliability, tools must be developed to assess their effectiveness and integration into the overall system. Additionally, attendees will be provided with leading strategies for mitigating extended outages outside of the traditional indices; including system hardening, undergrounding, and storm response. 5 INSTRUCTORS David Farmer, PE / Executive Consultant / UC Synergetic David Farmer, PE is an Executive Consultant for UC Synergetic. David holds a BSEE from West Virginia University Institute of Technology and is a licensed professional engineer in several states. Mr. Farmer has 30 years of experience with electric utilities in power delivery planning, load forecasting, reliability analysis, engineering and operations, construction and design, training, and project management. He has worked for both investor owned utilities and electric cooperatives, and has extensive consulting experience. He is a member of IEEE and currently serves on the Executive Leadership Committee of the Rural Electric Power Conference. Kevin Price / Manager of Engineering / UC Synergetic Kevin Price has more than 20 years of experience in engineering, maintaining and managing in electrical utility industry. Prior to his role at UC Synergetic, Kevin was in charge in charge of managing and developing maintenance programs for the distribution assets owned by Progress Energy Florida. In 2009, he was given the opportunity to lead his team in developing a strategic maintenance program to address underground cable reliability in Florida. This targeted approach decreased the failures by 15% while maintaining normal spending levels. He has recently been involved with setting standards on underground cable repairs to control costs and determine best approach to returning cable back to service. He has been involved in matters regarding maintenance programs for over three years. Mr. Price received his Bachelor s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in In 2002, he became a licensed professional engineer in the state of Florida. Kevin has worked in the utility industry for over 20 years and has a diverse experience in distribution. Primary positions held include Distribution Operations Manager, Regional Engineering Manager, Shift Supervisor, Design Engineer and Major Account Representative. Kevin is a member of the IEEE and regular presenter at IEEE and EUCI meetings. 5

6 INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS This course will feature PowerPoint presentations and in-class exercises. REQUIREMENTS FOR SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF PROGRAM Participants must sign in/out each day, and be in attendance for the entirety of the course, to be eligible for continuing education credit. CPE CREDITS Upon successful completion of this event, program participants interested in receiving CPE credits will receive a certificate of completion.
