Selling an Encoder 101by Chris Bowman Apr09 Who is TR? For over 25 years TR has been an innovator in the design and manufacture of rotary encoders, linear transducers, laser distance measurement products and other automation solutions. TR specializes in rotary encoders, having one of the industry s broadest ranges of product options and a world-class reputation. From general purpose incremental encoders to absolute multi-turn encoders with leading edge Industrial Ethernet communications, TR has the answer. Choosing an Encoder There are FIVE basic questions that need to be answered when selecting an encoder. 1. Is this a Linear or Rotary application? 2. What is the Accuracy/Repeatability/Resolution requirement? 3. What is the communication method? (Point to Point, Fieldbus, EtherNet) 4. What type/size of mechanical interface? (Shaft, Flange, Housing) 5. Are there any other Special requirements? (Vibration, Moisture, Impact) The answers to these five questions will lead to a TR solution that will satisfy even the most complex applications. Rotary Encoder Applications From Heavy Presses and Stamping to High Speed Packaging and Printing, TR Encoders provide reliable and accurate position information to your controller in a timely manner. TR has specialized in the design of leading quality products to function even in the harshest of environments.

Heavy Stamping and Presses Punching and Forming techniques are changing rapidly and becoming more complex, faster and require higher levels of precision up to the highest resolution (number of strokes). Innovative product requirements by the end user and continuous cost pressure, force manufactures to take product and tool to the limits of feasibility on a daily basis. Therefore it is becoming increasingly important for punching and forming processes to be optimized for precise control of every work step. An in-depth knowledge of this process is necessary to create the required quality products to support these applications. TR Electronic has worked in designing and developing encoder solutions for: Application Requirements (Solution) - Resistant to Vibration (Absorber Module) - Resistant to Oil / Liquid Ingression (Shaft Seals and Rubber Boot) - Flexible Communications (Most Common Fieldbus and EtherNet Protocols Available) - Impact Resistant (Stainless Steel Housing Upon Request) - Schuler - Muller Weingarten - Sick Stegmann - CEV58M/CEV65M o Multiple Shaft Configurations o Multiple Mounting Flanges o Multiple Fieldbus (DeviceNet and Profibus) o (CEV65M can be assembled with the same mounting flange for direct replacement of the CE100M) Similar Markets - Stone and Gravel Processing - Steel and Metal Foundries - Glass Manufacturing - Pulp and Paper

Injection Molding Injection molding requires high speed, low cost solutions. TR is able to provide a wide range of products to meet this need. Many household articles and packaging, as well as mechanical components for electronics and automobiles are manufactured with plastic injected parts. These industries require high volume/low cost components manufactured quickly and efficiently. Innovative procedures such as multicomponent injection, coating of contacts or In-Mold Labeling can only be accomplished with the implementation of a high precision encoder and linear transducer solutions. During each working stroke, the position of the tool can be acquired absolutely and wear-free. This guarantees identical production conditions throughout the production process. Movements of the extruder units can also be measured and regulated accordingly. Hydraulic cylinders are often used in the Injection Molding process. TR can provide linear encoders (transducers) which mount; rod style directly inside the cylinder, or externally with a profile housing. TR linear encoders (transducers) work off the magnetostriction principle. Application Requirements (Solutions) - Flexibility in Mounting (Rod, Standard Profile, Low Profile) - Resistant to Pressure of Hydraulic Fluid in Cylinder (Rod Housing) - Fieldbus or EtherNet Communications (Most Common Fieldbus and EtherNet Protocols Available) - Varying Measurement Lengths - Low Cost - Husky - Cincinnati Milacron - MTS - LA-Series (Rod Style) - LP-Series (Standard Profile) - LMP-Series (Low Profile) - CEV58M

Printing Modern printing applications require time critical (Real Time) position feedback, from sheet separation through to delivery. Synchronization of each printing couple and other processing stations is critical and is achievable with TR Encoders. This synchronization needs to happen using one of the major Fieldbus or EtherNet protocols. Printing requires precision measurement and control adjustment of roller distances in printing couples to ensure correct colour reproduction. There is also the need to set stops, cutters and folds to the desired end formats in final processing. These diverse mechanical adjustment tasks throughout an entire printing machine can be simply achieved using TR encoders to provide absolute position to the controller. Production flexibility, shortest changeover times, accurate folding and low maintenance combined with absolute reliability and problem free operation, are critical components to success in modern folding machines. TR encoders are programmable and give the opportunity to make changes over the Fieldbus. Application Requirements (Solutions) - Real Time Communication (Most Common Fieldbus and EtherNet Protocols) - Flexibility in Programming (All Attributes Programmable over the network) - Modular Machine Design (CEV58 Series Provides Compact Housing) - Flexibility in Mounting (Straight Shaft, Hollow Shaft and Blind Shaft Available) - Low Cost - Domino Printing - BEI - Dynapar - CEV58M (w Fieldbus: DeviceNet, Profibus) - CEV65M (w Ethernet: Ethernet IP, EtherCAT, ProfiNet) - IEV58 Similar Markets - Paper Product Manufacturing (Paper, Cardboard, etc )

Storage and Logistics Automated Storage and Retrieval Systems (ASRS) are becoming increasingly popular in the world of Material Handling. Whether handing books or fresh vegetables, Automated Warehouse Systems (AWS) using the latest technology ensure that a customer receives the right goods at the right time. TR is a manufacturer of Laser Distance Measurement units which provide accurate and reliable positioning information. TR lasers, LE200, are linearized to ensure accuracy and repeatability up to a maximum distance of 230m, at the high speed requirements in an ASRS. The LE200 uses the Phase-Shift Differential principle for measuring, versus the LLB 60 which uses Time of Flight. Application Requirements (Solutions) - Large Measuring Ranges - Rapid Position Feedback (Phase-Shift Differential Technology ensures quick response time) - Temperature (Heating and Cooling Options Available) - Maintenance Free (Non-Contact Laser Measurement) - Walmart - HK Systems - Chrysler - Witron - Sick - Witron - Leuze - LE200 Laser Distance Measurement - LLB60 Laser Distance Measurement - CEV65M Rotary Encoder w String Pot Similar Markets - Heavy Material Handling Applications (Steel, Paper, Logging, Printing, etc )

Special Applications Beyond standard applications requiring position feedback, TR has an assortment of options available to allow for Excellent performance in extreme environments and unique applications. Absorber Modules Dampen Vibration Heavy Duty Stainless Steel Housing o Marine Applications Oil Rigs On-Ship Machinery Container Shipping Yards o Acidic Environments Pulp and Paper Food and Beverage Various Styles of Couplings TR Electronic Center of Technical Excellence will work with you to develop custom TRaining to meet your needs.
