Safety Installations for Level Crossings High on safety. Low on cost.

A more efficient level of safety at railroad crossings. The Situation: Unnecessarily expensive standard solutions Safety installations for level crossings (SILC) are vital and, at the same time, they constitute a considerable cost factor for operators. The costs of new level crossings are often disproportionately high because of outdated standards and regulations which do not relate to requirements on site. The result: over-dimensioned, highly complex and expensive solutions where they are not really necessary. The Problem: Mounting cost pressure Faced with shrinking budgets, companies, local authorities and states, have to consider investments carefully. Scare financial resources have to be deployed responsibly and efficiently. This also applies to installing and safeguarding level crossings: efficacious and reliable results must be achieved with minimum outlay. The Solution: HANNING & KAHL s modular safety installations HANNING & KAHL has developed a modular safety installation system solution with three specific versions with varying levels of safety equipment for different applications: SILC-L, SILC-M, SILC-S. With this range HANNING & KAHL offers optimum economic efficiency and safety for each level crossing in compliance with SIL3. SILC-L safety system High on safety. Low on cost.

The Concept. Flexible, cost-efficient solutions HANNING & KAHL s modular SILC concept offers solutions in different technical versions and price categories to provide safety at level crossings. The solutions can be adapted to actual system environments while focussing on optimum cost- benefit ratio. A further advantage of the modular system: each SILC safety system can be easily adapted if safety or convenience requirements change. All HANNING & KAHL system components are optimally tuned to each other. The result is precisionengineered, objective-oriented solutions that only an experienced partner can provide. At HANNING & KAHL, you profit from decades of experience with consummate concepts and sophisticated solutions: logically-consistent, fullyfledged, functional equipment. The possibilities at a glance HANNING & KAHL s SILC safety system offers you the following equipment and performance features: Functional unit SILC-L SILC-M SILC-S Switch-on Punctual with direction recognition Punctual with direction recognition Punctual with direction recognition Switch-off Linear with direction recognition Linear with direction recognition Linear with direction recognition Track-side control devices Train protection Protection (main) signals Train protection Protection (main) signals No Roadside control devices Flashing signals Traffic lights Acoustic Flashing signals Traffic lights Acoustic Flashing signals Traffic lights Acoustic Barrier control Yes No No Automatic malfunction message Yes Yes Yes Local operation Yes Yes Yes Connection to Interlocking systems Yes Alternative: possible Optional Alternative: possible No Alternative: not necessary Improving safety while minimizing costs HANNING & KAHL components are proven and successfully deployed all over the world experience you can rely on. SILC safety solutions made by HANNING & KAHL do not economise on quality; cost-efficiency is achieved by catering for individual requirements and foregoing the need for over-dimensioned equipment.

The System Components. Vital processor HN-P At the heart of the HANNING & KAHL integrated solution is the vital processor system HN-P which fulfils SIL3 with its two-channel microcontroller. Modular component arrangement and individ - ual programming ensure that all your requirements are safely met. The HN-P software consists of a generic part and a user-specific element. The number of signals, the type of vehicle detection equipment, system times etc. can be configured. Rapid onthe-spot diagnosis of operating and error status is possible via integrated display. This makes it possible for HANNING & KAHL to implement safety installations at short notice. Communication If requested, communication can be set up between the SILC safety system and the control room for retrieval of signal-controller reporting data for remote diag nosis. Depending on the distance to the level crossings, radio modem communication may be necessary, SMS mes - saging is possible. The safety installation can also be integrated into superordinate systems, for example interlocking systems, via HANNING & KAHL network components. Systems like Operate & Observe can also be made available and signal-controller reporting data retrieved for remote diagnosis. LED signal transmitters Signal aspects are indicated with energy-saving LEDs. LED signals have a long service life yet require minimum maintenance. On account of their high contrast, they shine brighter and more distinctly than conventional signal transmitters and are clearly visible even in direct sunlight. LED status is checked via current monitoring and malfunctions are detected instantaneously. Vehicle detection Vehicle-detection switches can be connected to HANNING & KAHL level-crossing safety installations to suit requirements. Technical advances in vehicle detection can be integrated at any time. Track diagram stage A track diagram stage, representing the level crossing in schematic form, is installed in the control cabinet. The status of vehicle detectors, signals, etc can be visualised via LED on the layout panel, giving maintenance staff a rapid overview of equipment status. A simulation function can also be added to effectuate and simulate activation of individual rail-vehicle detection switches, for example. Malfunctions can be located and cleared rapidly and conveniently. Normally, double wheel sensors are deployed, but track or blocking circuits can also be used.

Rhaetian Rail A Case in Point. Success in Switzerland In spring 2006, the Swiss Association of Public Transport launched a research project aimed at providing safety on unprotected level crossings with so-called Micro level-crossing safety installations (Corresponds to our SILC-S installation today). HANNING & KAHL qualified as a competent partner. Efficient, low-cost solutions are not feasible with existing safety installations at level crossings. The SILC technology engineered by HANNING & KAHL offers various levels of safety equipment in different price brackets to suit local requirements and budgets. In July 2007, HANNING & KAHL s»micro«test equipment was installed on a level crossing in Malans and approved by the Swiss Federal Transport Ministry (BAV). HANNING & KAHL s»micro«solution uses conventional road traffic lights: RED = STOP, GREEN = GO. These signals alert even the most distracted road users and are intuitively understood. The lights are green as long as trains are not approaching and change to red well before the train passes (time periods can be configured). In the event of a malfunction, an amber light flashes, indicating that the user must exercise caution. In the worst possible scenario, all traffic lights extinguish and the signal remains dark. A St. Andrew s Cross indicates that users must personally ensure that a train is not approaching. The signal controller automatically sends an SMS to the control room which can then have the equipment checked immediately. HANNING & KAHL test installation in Malans

Technical Options and Services. Visualisation As a supplement to the local operating element, we can also provide central computer-based process visualisation with which you can operate and observe the signalling installation. New O & O functions (zooming, alarm prioritizing, etc) offer additional safety and convenience. The system is networkable and can be quickly and flexibly adapted if requirements change. When components are equipped with the route diagnosis system FADIS, you are always informed on component and equipment status and able to react in good time and ensure the avail - ability of your line network. FADIS facilitates comprehensive remote diagnosis and provides unsurpassed transparency for maintenance management a vital aid for anticipatory maintenance planning and efficient trouble shooting. Testing and service equipment Working closely together with transport providers and vehicle manufacturers, HANNING & KAHL has developed practical testing equipment and service devices for requirements in rail transportation. This equipment offers optimum support when trouble-shooting, recording test results and planning service work. TuneQ is a new supportive, administrative tool designed by HANNING & KAHL to make equipment and maintenance management even clearer and more efficient. The tool incorporates high-performance infrastructure data management (IDM) as called for by VDV 456, which can be adapted to your individual requirements. Electronic event recorder To be able to reconstruct and document events which lead to malfunctions, all actions of the signalling installation are electronically recorded with date and time stamp. The event recorder can be read out at the control cabinet via laptop, and remote read-out and graphic visualisation of events are also possible. HN-P testing equipment
