5 TWO TYPES OF GAS STORAGES YOUR CHOICE. SALT CAVERNS AND PORE STORAGES SAFEGUARDING SECURITY OF SUPPLY. The storage of natural gas was launched on a large scale several decades ago. It is indispensable for the security and gas supply. The fluctuating gas demand and weather-dependent generation of electricity from renewable sources need to be balanced reliably and flexibly. Natural gas is the ideal means to do this. These structures can be converted for natural gas storage if they are favourably located and have suitable reservoir parameters. Pore storage, with its large volume, is ideally suited to serve longterm supply needs. Filled in the summer, they provide optimum cover for increasing demand during the winter. Storage caverns are generally located at shallow depths of up to 1,700 metres, providing high storage volumes for natural gas in bottle-shaped cavities. The impervious salt deposits of the walls of the caverns provide a perfect seal for the gas stored in this storage option. In turn, exceptional flexibility and precisely organised injection and withdrawal capacities are needed from natural gas storage facilities. Natural gas is generated under pressure and temperature influences from bedrock such as coal. Due to the accumulation of gas, natural underground reservoirs are created in the porous rock. Numerous reservoirs in Germany offer the geological conditions necessary for pore storage. Storengy operates three high-performing pore storage facilities in the north and south of Germany. The drilling of large diameter access boreholes enables the withdrawal of relatively large volumes of gas at short notice ideal for the flexible coverage of peaks in gas demand.
