6 The Baltic-Adriatic Corridor One of the most important trans-european road and railway axes. It connects the Baltic with the Adriatic Sea, through industrialized areas between Southern Poland (Upper Silesia), the Eastern Alpine region (Vienna and Bratislava), Slovenia (port of Koper) and Northern Italy (Ports of Trieste, Venice, Ravenna). Main missing links Cross-border sections/connections and the Semmering-Base- and Koralm tunnels in Austria for the Alpine crossing (already under construction). The multimodal cross-border connections (infrastructure, terminals) between Vienna, Bratislava, Ostrava and Katowice need upgrading. Traffic management systems must be deployed along the corridor and multimodal connections with the ports should also be developed. 6

7 Investments in BA-Corridor Overview of the current financial distribution of the investments ( 59,7 bn up to 2030): 52% is allocated to railway 30% to road 12% to ports (including interconnections 6% is allocated to airports, rail-road terminals and urban nodes 13% of the total budget is allocated to cross-border sections. 9 Challenges Transport and a high performance infrastructure enable economic growth and are essential for a competitive economy. Member States have to implement the core network according to their commitments toward the EU-Commission. Available funding from the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) has to be increased in the next EU-multiannual financial framework. Alternative financing instruments should be enforced to increase attractiveness of private investments in infrastructure. Strict earmarking of revenues for the transport sector is essential. Trans-European Networks have to be reviewed and complemented constantly: To close the gap of 300km between the Baltic-Adriatic-Corridor and the Brenner-Axis and avoid detours, we support the inclusion of Pyhrn-Schober and Tauern-Axis in Austria. Multi-modality has to be fostered. 9

10 Focus Multi-modality The integration of all modes of transport has to be enforced to deploy each mode according to its strengths (co-modality), focus has to be on trimodal nodes connecting road, rail and water. Freedom of choice of the preferred and most efficient mode of transport should be guaranteed. Co-modality cannot be required top down but is conditional upon availability of infrastructure and an optimal framework for its efficient use. North-Adriatic ports shall develop further their infrastructure to enhance competitiveness. Hinterland connections (rail and road) have to be improved. The deployment of ITS has to be enforced because they entail economic, ecological and safety-related advantages. Existing information systems have to be expanded to include all modes of transport. Regional and transport policy have to be harmonised to foster the establishment of businesses close to ideal transport connections. 10
