3 Managing RMW Collection and Storage Proper Storage of RMW Containers Prevent leakage or release of waste Protect from water, rain and wind Prevent spread of waste or chemo Protect from animals Maintain in non-putrescent state Prevent odors from emanating Secure to deny unauthorized access Use prominent warning signs indicating storage of infectious or chemo waste Do not commingle infectious or chemo with other waste Enclosures for RMW shall be capable of being readily maintained in sanitary condition 3

4 Storage Times PA Code Room temperature - no longer than 30 days from: the date waste container is full date generator seals the container, whichever is first Used sharps containers may be used until full as long as the storage is in accordance with basic storage requirements If RMW or chemo waste becomes putrescent during storage, it must be removed within 3 days 4

6 Manifest A generator (shipper) who transports, or offers for transportation, infectious or chemotherapeutic waste for offsite processing or disposal shall ensure proper segregation of infectious and chemotherapeutic waste from other types of waste and prepare a manifest according to the instructions supplied with the manifest The manifest shall be in at least four parts If the waste is to be processed or disposed in this Commonwealth, the generator (shipper) shall use one of the manifest formats prescribed by the Department The manifest copies shall be distributed as follows: 1) A four-part manifest shall be used by a generator (shipper) who designates only one transporter. i. Copy 4 of the manifest is retained by the generator (shipper) ii. Copy 3 of the manifest is retained by the transporter iii. Copy 2 of the manifest is retained by the owner or operator of the processing or disposal facility iv. Copy 1 of the manifest is mailed to the generator (shipper) by the owner or operator of the processing or disposal facility Manifest copies shall be retained for at least 5 years from the date of shipment of the waste

8 Training Requirements Since Regulated Medical Waste contains sharps and potentially infectious substances, all affected employees are required to have initial and annual OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens training The transport of Regulated Medical Waste is regulated by the United States Department of Transportation as a hazardous material while it is in transport. All affected employees (those who perform the functions of either packaging or signing the shipping papers) must complete DOT hazardous materials training initially and every three years thereafter Stericycle can provide the necessary DOT training for your employees.
