WEBINAR Pedestrian Simulation Fundamentals and SimWalk Software Overview April 2, 2009

I. INTRODUCTION Sagar R. Sonar, PE President MultiModes (Authorized Reseller) USA Alex Schmid Founder and Director Savannah Simulations AG Switzerland

II. WHAT IS PEDESTRIAN SIMULATION? Solution / Improvement Alternative Analysis Real world pedestrian problem Analysis Computer model

III. BENEFITS OF SIMULATION Cost effective design testing (no costly real-life lif experiments) Possibility to deal with complexity Flexibility (effective testing of different scenarios) Risk free (no dangerous real-life experiments, e.g. evacuation) Better decision making

IV. APPLICATIONS evacuation transport urban planning

V. SIMWALK IN A NUTSHELL SimWalk is a flexible pedestrian simulation software focused on evacuation, transportation and urban planning applications Analysis of pedestrian walkability, safety, and comfort SimWalk is a decision support software for traffic engineers, transit planners, architects and urban planners SimWalk provides a range of traffic related analysis tools like LOS, density, speed, person counts or space utilization analysis SimWalk is being used worldwide SimWalk Pro and SimWalk Transport

VI. SIMWALK HOW DOES IT WORK? STEP 1: Importing the simulation environment SimWalk directly integrates CAD files (.dxf), one level or multi-level scenarios SimDraw module provides an integrated CAD tool in SimWalk Simulation environment can be constructed in a CAD program or SimDraw Identify entrances, exits, waiting areas, escalators/stairs, elevators, turnstiles, corridors, etc.

STEP 2: Generation of pedestrians and behavior Develop Agent groups and Input pedestrian parameters Number of agents Walking speeds Space Specify start areas, waiting areas, and exit areas Socio-demographic parameters (Pedestrian Database)

Pedestrian Database: Pedestrian Simulation Know-How Research data Formulae General information on pedestrian behavior

STEP 3: Conducting simulation studies Simulation of different scenarios with changed environment or different pedestrian groups.

STEP 4: Analysis of simulation results Simulation results may be analyzed and presented with tables, bar charts, videos or snapshots. Numerical results can be directly exported to MS Excel or Access analyzed in other statistics software.

VII. MEASURES OF EFFECTIVENESS Density (bottlenecks etc.) Person Counts (e.g. exits or self defined inspace = counting line or area) Walking Speeds (mean and single pedestrians) Travel Times (mean or single pedestrians) Space (space utilization = pedestrians s per square meter) Pedestrian Trails Levels of fservice (LOS) Fruin, Polus, Tanaboriboon etc. or self defined Density analysis of train station

VIII. SOCIAL FORCE MODEL SIMWALK ALGORITHM Pedestrian movement is influenced by object and pedestrian pressures Pedestrian Pressure P Object Pressure Corridor Pedestrians move destination directed (shortest path to destination), avoiding congestions and other pedestrians and decide depending on the actual situation (e.g. avoid congested exits etc.)

IX. SIMWALK PRO Safety evaluation of stations, airports, sports stadium, buildings, etc. Event Management Urban planning Integration of pedestrian scenarios in normal traffic simulation (e.g. intersections etc.) Evacuation studies

X. SIMWALK TRANSPORT Integrate timetables Simulation and analysis of passenger movements in train, metro and bus stations Design of station and related objects like platforms, stairs, ticket counters, etc. to optimize passenger safety and efficiency Optimize train timetable, passenger transfer times and connections

XI. SIMWALK 3D VRML virtual Virtual worlds (3ds humans Max etc.) library + + SimWalk simulation data SimWalk 3D module = Rendering Engine
