Container tracking and monitoring in a Container Terminal NCTV Case. Ignacio Huet (NOATUM PORTS) 1 st International Workshop, November 2014

INDEX What means CONTAINER TRACKING and MONITORING in a CT? Why we Track and Monitor Containers? How we do it What else could be done - Conclusions

What means T&M in a CT Control the Container Life Cycle while it s living in the terminal. The Container Life Cycle is the time period of a Container since it Enters the terminal until it is delivered. Control = Register Events in the System. The Events we want to Register for T&M are 8: 1. Date/Time of Arrival (T) 2. Arrival Condition (M) 3. Stacking position in the YARD. (T) 4. Temperature Monitoring (Reefers) (M) 5. Security Checks (HOT / IMO Containers) (M) 6. Internal moves (Shiftings, Remarshalling, Inspection) (T) 7. Date/Time of Departure (T) 8. Departure Condition. (M)

Why we Track & Monitor Containers? Noatum Value: Excellence in Customer Service Delivery Track-and-Trace functionality: We cannot miss Anyone. Position Control. We cannot break Anyone. Damages Control. We have to protect Goods inside Reefer & HOT Monitoring Our customer need to know in real time where his container is located in the world. We have to protect ourselves from Dangerous goods IMO Segregation and Monitoring. 30,000 Containers in yard

How we do it? REGISTERING EVENTS: Means of Entry/Delivery: - Truck - Vessel - Train Arrival/Departure Date/Time & Container Condition (1,2,7,8) Before Event: Administrative Check (EDI Documentation, Means of entry/delivery, Cont. Characteristics, etc.) During Event: Physical Check (Cross Check with Admin, Control Damages and register Date/Time) GATES (Automated): Cross Admin Check:» OCR Portal CONTAINER # & Truck License Plate #» KIOSK Transport Order to be authorized or rejected. (Reg.Date/Time) Cont. Conditions:» Top/Side Cameras: CONTAINER DAMAGES (Video/Images saved in DB)

Gate OCR Portal & KIOSK

Gates Container Damage Control.

Vessel Events (Arrival/Delivery Tm + DMG) During Event: Physical Check (Cross Check with Admin, Control Damages and register Date/Time) Vessel (Semi-Automated): Cross Admin Check:» OCR CAMERAS CONTAINER #» Hand Held Terminal RF Register Date/Time Cont. Conditions:» CAMERAS: CONTAINER DAMAGES

Train Events: During Event: Physical Check (Cross Check with Admin, Control Damages and register Date/Time) TRAIN (Manual): Cross Admin Check:» Hand Held Terminal RF CONTAINER # and Characteristics. Cont. Conditions:» Tally Man Updates system using HHT Register Date/Time

How we do it? REGISTERING EVENTS: Stacking position in yard and internal moves (3,6) Before Event: Job Queue Creating and Job dispatching. During Event: Physical Check (RTG confirm PICK UP/DROP a container and register Date/Time) RTG PDS (Positioning Detection System) RTG position in the yard GPS CONTAINER POSITION Controlling RTG SPREADER Position Reading Spreader Encoders for X,Y. EVENT FINISHED: TWISLOCKS OPENED/CLOSED Reg. D&T +New Yard Position. INTERACTION WITH YARD TRACTORS / EXTERNAL TRUCKS: ACTIVE RFID (TAG) =,0001% Missing Containers.

RTG Process Flow. Y Correct read Light X Tag Antenna reads ID Tag Truck Driver shows TAG

How we do it? REGISTERING EVENTS: Temperature Monitoring, Security Checks (4,5) Before Event: Administrative Check (EDI Documentation, Cont. Characteristics, Temperature Required, IMO Class, IMO Author, etc.) During Event: Physical Check (HHT, TallyMan, Priv. Security Guard) TEMPERATURE MONITORING Register Temperatures and Faults code TallyMan + HHT IMO Control Segregate Containers in the yard. Check status periodically. HOT CONTAINER Special Yard position, Assigned Private Security Guard, Cameras.

Conclusions Track-and-Trace Container Position and status while it s living in the terminal is a basic service for the Container terminal to be provided. To guarantee best service it s required to sensorize all your yard equipment providing accurate and on real time information to the Terminal Operation System (TOS). In NCTV the usage of RF-ID gives an extra to minimize Missed Containers. T&T in the CT is a small portion of the global T&T that is provided by the shipping lines to their customers. PORT COMMUNITY PLATFORMS like ValenciaPortPCS are critical in this task, working like a hub, collecting and distributing the information up/down, down/up.

Conclusions As you may noticed there is NO reference to use RFID in CONTAINERS. The Containers manufacturers and owners are not deciding yet to use this cheap and useful technology. Why? INTE TRANSIT Pilot has demonstrated that READING RFID Tags in the CONTAINERS and use it for better T&T is possible.
