Cheese and Bacon Slices Objective To reduce the manual handling and alignment of slices as they are presented to the spiral freezer. Solution Product running in rows of four would be presented onto an operated shuttle retract mechanism. The shuttle would retract and drop each row of finished product onto a modular belt running at 90 degrees directly below. The drop distance was kept to minimum and the speed of the modular conveyor would be controlled as to ensure that the row just dropped would clear the shuttle before the following row is deposited. This produced a single row of product at 45 degrees onto the plastic modular conveyor thus feeding the product onto the spiral freezer. Controls Inverter speed controls were used to ensure correct speed differentials at the shuttle drop of point contained in a stainless steel enclosure.

Patterned Ice Cream Unit A small ice cream manufacturer required a unit to enable various (flavoured) patterns on their product, this unit had to be versatile, easy to clean, and variable product friendly. Crown designed the following bespoke unit which was uncomplicated, user friendly solution. The unit consisted of a powered grip faced conveyor complete with guides The ice cream tubs were presented narrow edge leading in rows of four. The pattern was achieved by two stripe heads. The heads had the ability to be rotary and enable a raising or lowering of the stripe heads to suit pattern requirements using various styli. The heads were on mobile frames to enable the heads to be docked with the conveyor as required, in order to future proof the unit it was designed so that extra heads could be added easily to enable pattern choice. The unit was operated by photocells and pneumatics.

Crown Conveyors gives Paramount a structured product flow coupled with maximum use of factory space enabling a third line which in turn dramatically increases product output. Paramount 21 is a highly successful seafood company with award winning top quality frozen seafood & vegetarian meals to the UK s biggest chains. Following their recent expansion move to new premises, Paramount 21 is going from strength to strength. Steve Lamont Production Director asked Crown Conveyors UK Ltd to come up with a solution to an area in production. The objective was to take product from the outfeed of the spiral freezer and carry it in a controlled manner to the packing conveyor. Crown Conveyors solution was to supply an 180º modular belt conveyor with moulded rubber flights to control the product whilst the product is descending in height. This was to be done in the new factory so it was important that the conveyor linked in with the existing equipment already at the premises. The solution gave Paramount a structured product flow coupled with maximum use of factory space enabling a third line which in turn dramatically increased product output.

An interview with Steve Lamont follows: Question: What attracted you to Crown Conveyors? Answer: The Endoline sales rep gave glowing reference. Question: How did you find Crown Conveyors compared to other companies? Answer: The price was compatible with other companies but the personal service was far better. Question: Taking into consideration your first initial contact with C/C through to receiving your quotation how do you feel C/C interpreted your requirements? Answer: They were very patient, drawings were redone several times until we said that s it we are happy. Crown then made exactly what they said they would. Question: How was the installation? Answer: The team sent to install the conveyors were professional and efficient. It does what I dreamed it would, reduced manning levels and made the job far easier for the operatives. Question: What did you think of the quality & build of the conveyor? Answer: Very Good. The equipment is strong and well made Question: Did you feel that c/c could have done better in any area? Answer: No, there have been one or two modifications but these were acted on as soon as they were identified. Question: Overall would you recommend C/C? Answer: Yes and I have done. We wish Paramount 21 continued success in the future.

Michael s Pitta Bread Product Finished Pitta Bread products in single sealed primary packs. Pack width approximately 135mm. Pack length approximately 220mm. Objective To transfer packs from three across narrow edge leading at the outfeed of the Multivac and feed them onto a metal detector conveyor in single file evenly spaced. Solution 1. Supply 4 off converging conveyors consisting of three parallel lanes of plastic modular belt each 1,500 mm overall length. The three lanes will run at different speeds with the middle lane running fastest. This will accelerate the middle pack ahead of the outer packs. The outer lanes will also run at different speeds allowing one pack to get ahead of the other. Staggered guides will plough the outer packs towards the middle lane producing one single stream of packs. 2. Supply control systems for the above consisting of three inverters and all necessary controls etc mounted in a stainless steel enclosure. Up/down stream interfacing. Operator controls will consist of start and stop buttons. Speed adjustment will be via the inverters and will be an engineering function. Benefits The plastic modular belt will resist the sideways force exerted by the packs as they are ploughed sideways providing a robust solution to the current problem of belt damage. The control philosophy will be based simply on the speed differential between the lanes.

Question: What did you think of the quality & build of the conveyor? Answer: The general build and quality of the equipment looks fantastic but of course, only time can tell. Question: Did you feel that c/c could have done better in any area? Answer: CC were excellent all along, beating the lead time quoted on build and with Ian and Tony following with a site visit. Question: Overall would you recommend C/C? Answer: I would recommend CC to anyone and also hope we can do future business ourselves

Pizza Control To transport product from the lidding machines through a metal detector, checkweigher and proceed onto a packing station conveyor prior to cartoning The project required receiving frozen pizza bases from the outfeed of an inline freezer, then to stack them into groups to be fed into a flow wrap machine. The challenges were increased by the variety of bases, product thickness, diameter and angle at which rows were fed into the freezer. The stacking also had its challenges as the frozen bases were very brittle and easily broken, also the stack number count varied from product to product. The pizza bases varied in thickness from 2mm up to 8mm, in diameter from 90mm to 350mm and the row count from 2 up to 6.

Project Solutions The first challenge was to bring the angled rows into a square format to enable counting and stacking, this was achieved by using a variable speed mitre conveyor which automatically brought the rows to the tapered transfer point to produce square and even rows. The stacking was achieved by producing a rotary tray unit that would receive the bases from the end of an acceleration conveyor and index down each time a row was received. To enable unloading to take place at the same time as loading the tray unit was made up of 6 trays running on the same axis but powered by 2 separate servo drives 3 trays to each, This enabled every other tray to move independently to its neighbour so as one tray was parked for unloading at the lower level the tray above was able to index down as base rows arrived. The system needed a product selection method to enable the stack count, index distance and feed conveyor speeds to be adjusted for each base type. The Stacking units and flow wrap machines were duplicated to enable automatic change over in the event of a wrapper failure or product change. The system was controlled by an Allan Bradley Compact Logix PLC and Panel View H.M.I. the stacking servos were supplied by Baldor and the base counting was achieved using a Balluff laser fibre optic.
