Is Air Transportation of Perishables a sustainable Cool Chain Activity? 05/28/12 Prepared by Stavros Evangelakakis Cool Chain association 23rd - 24th, Luxembourg May 2012

Agenda Perishables Managing the coolchain/ supply chain At the tarmac/ground Thermal aircraft performance Infrastructure of Aiports

The meaning of perishables? Perishables Goods that loose value in a relative quick time frame To be successful in Perishables we need to master: Time and Temperatures However the real question is, how do we master? Time: as fast as possible, and Temperature: right and steady through out or during the transportation 3

Products classed as perishables Many of these products require special handling and are not compatible with each other they share the same basic characteristics of sensitivity to Time, Temperature and Treatment. They include: Seafood Pharmaceuticals/Medicines Dairy Flowers/Plants/ Meats Vegetables Fruits 4

. Collection of certain statements Perishables are seasonal Perishables don t pay Perishables was a by product Many Claims A lot of waste 5

But without perishables certain rotations will not be possible

16% of CV flown production in 2011 is TEM goods! Veggies 10 source: SAP/Outstations Veggies 11 Fruits 10 Fruits 11 Dairy/Cheese/Foodstuff 10 Dairy/Cheese/Foodstuff 11 Flowers/Ferns 10 Flowers/Ferns 11 Fish 10 Fish 11 meat 10 meat 11 Horse Meat 10 Horse Meat 11 Pharma 10 Pharma 11 Source: world wide manual input form CV stations

Awareness starts internally in airline, we have a team trying to achieve this. Cross divisional Team Standard Operating Procedures Constantly optimizing process Learning from the quality audits 150 certifications to CV employees form EV Various tests and analysis about temperature were done Successful introduced Tyvek Thermoblankets in our sytsem Setting standards for RFID use on board CV Following up the audits

Traditional flow of air cargo standard procedures for all 1 error in whole process will lead to loss of product Origin Trucking Onload Airport Tarmac Offload Airport Trucking Destination Delivery Build/ figure/ Weigh Pallets coolcels Offload Transfer Delivery Forwarder Handling Agent CV Handling Agent Forwarder Coolchain must be maintained at all time and common communication Source: company material

Broken Cold Chain How can we avoid this UNBROKEN BROKEN FOR 9 HRS

What can we learn from the pharma process? Packaging Process MONITORING Source: company material

Our internal communication system allow a seamless information flow communication

airports process and aircraft thermal performance

Different airports

tarmac Airport facilities Luxembourg Truck Arrival Cool Cells Temperature Controlled Facilities Maximum meters from cool cell to the aircraft No waiting time on the tarmac between cool cell to the Source: company material

tarmac Airport facilities Luxembourg

tarmac Airport facilities Luxembourg Cool Cell Gate Exit to the tarmac Refrigerated Stacker-System with 20 Cool Cell (0 C to +27 C) Ready to board the aircraft less then 60 minutes of departure No storage on the tarmac Source: company material

Or is this a cooling facility

Is it possible to maintain temperature in B F? aircraft 4 different zones in a B f to set diff temperature 2010_09_27_tem_EC S_during_flight.JPG Source: company material

Environmental Control System Aircon in Main Deck always on Switching on Aircon in the 2 bellies: +0.7% Fuel Burn Main Deck and Bellies always pressurized => 750hPa Airflow per ULD in Bellies (352CFM) are higher than in Main Deck (122CFM) Bellies cool down faster than Main Deck Bellies better for large amounts of animals B F and B BCF identical! Or Passenger 05/28/12 Cool Chain association 23rd - but 24th, Luxembourg

aircraft Temp recording during flight Temperature recording Data avail for up two months In case of temperature deviation Source: company material

On ground Flight ops Ground ops

However they will be a difference between air & payload temperature Air temperature: 2 C

Chapter 17: : Label becomes mandatory as of 1 st July 2012 an Why only for Pharma?

Conclusion Packaging, process and monitoring Team creating awareness and coordinating with areas All parties need to be involved in the supply chain Tarmac is the bottle neck of the airlines Understanding your capabilities and tool Temperature recordings during flight An all-cargo airline can fly to different airports
